@Nancy - IIRC they did originally plan to dump water at #5 & 6. I never heard if they did it though or whether they decided ontanks instead

@Nancy -- I remembered your comment on temps given to reporters, just that it is surprising to not see them do anything in writing -- a large amount of white "smoke" would mean > 100C, IMO.

They've been removing water, from both 5 & 6. On 3 May, removed 114 cubic meters of water from the #6 turbine bldg basement to a temporary tank. For #5, "(about 600m3) in the basement of the turbine building of Unit 5 to the Condenser"

@Markfm have we ever gotten an answer to the origin of that water? I had someone email me today asking about why the water in 5 & 6 were showing radiation.

Not that I recall. I don't know if #5 and #6 have some small (relatively) leaks in their piping, or if it is a groundwater intrusion.

@Markfm This is why I contacted and asked the reporter. I pointed out the coordinated lack of heat images that started at the same time the SFP's started steaming on a regular basis. Had not heard more back. I wanted to put the notion to various people about why is TEPCO being less than informative about an obvious new problem.

@ Nancy - IIRC turbine buildings for 5 & 6 were flooded during the tsunami. There was discussion here some time ago aboout whether the cable tunnels stretched as far as these reactors. As you say -they sit higher up

From an AP site I get "Workers also are pumping less-radioactive water into the ocean from the basements of Units 5 and 6." That indicates it isn't just "clean" tsunami water.

indeed -how did the water near #5 & 6 become contaminated? So many unanswered qu's - we could do with a page devoted to each so that people could either post solutions or lacking that, theories

@ukval that'll be the trillion yen question @fitter this isn't it but it is up your street it is GE's comment on modifications to it's fukushima reactors
NOTE! it say's --We understand that all of the BWR Mark I containment units at Fukushima Daiichi also addressed these issues and implemented modifications in accordance with Japanese regulatory requirements.-- which interprets as - we have no idea or are not telling you what mods were made at fuku

@Elaine Kirk, looked at the METI stats for the reactors, and on the last page, in the Reactor #3 column, at the D/W row, there is a temp figure of RPV 228.1 degrees C. Can't figure out what this is relating too. I have never seen anything that high on #3, need to find out what the Japanese writing around it is referring too !!!! Is this a D/W temp or an RPV temp ? If it is a D/W temp, that means corium is in the D/W and it is active !!

@UKVal, could it be from water spill from the SPF's during the quakes the last several weeks, nothing is on top of the SPF's to prevent that.

@Nancy, YES, I know that, but this figure is underneath that column and it says "RPV 228.1 C" , that is why I was trying to get somebody that spoke the language to decipher it. It is the last page of the latest METI stat (posted above),

The 228C is the Drywell RPV Bellows Seal temperature. Here's yesterday's version of the NPP table in English, so you can decode the entries: www.nisa.meti.go.jp

@MarkFM, where do you get those copies ?? Next question is ? Where is the "Bellows seal" and what does it do ??? 228.1 C is really HOT, and it looks like it is increasing, from the chart you just posted. If it is a reference to temps in the D/W than there is something in the drywell hotter than heck !!!! And getting hotter !!!

The bellows seal is between the drywell and the reactor, near the top of the reactor. I'm not sure if this figure is precisely a Mark 1, but it should give you an idea of what they're talking about:

@MarkFM, looking at the one from yesterday you posted below, and todays stats, there is a huge increase in #2 CAMS, S/C #2 stat, yesterday was 5.34 x 10 Svh (high), todays stat is 8.35 x 10 Svh (really high) !!!

wtm, that is right, noticeable increases: 39 - 47 - 53 - 84, over the last few days. I really do wonder if there is some kind of scabbing kind of effect, crud builds near that sensor then it peels off (remember it was a lot higher a week or so back, then dropped a huge amount in 1 day)
