  • @Markfm In the Tsunami/earthquake, they had like 15 large fuel tanks at a fuel depot burn, and all this area that got inundated with water had lots of phophates and feritlizers dissolved in water. I t is just plain nasty what happened. I personally don't care if the add a couple of toxins in their engineered plan for recovery.

  • @lillymunster Elemental would refer to iodine that hasn't combined with any other element. I-131 is still iodine. Whether it is possible for hydrionic acid to be produced at the site, I don't know, maybe nobody knows, who knows what kind of chemical soup we're dealing with.

  • Since at under a month into their 6 to 9 month plan they're already behind schedule, and the "discovery" that 1 is leaking like a sieve is news on top of that, something tells me that it'll be a while before they need worry too much about any residual hydrazine cleanup. It'll be some time before they can contemplate leasing that land to organic farmers.

  • @Markfm The plan 6-9 mo has to be multiplied by 10 to come up with an actual number. I believe in 6-9 months, they will trully be stable.. And then 6-9 years to have a good handle on the mess ( melted fuel out, sfp empty and just highly contaminated reactor facility to remove and dispose of

  • @Markfm If TEPCO can achieve cold shut-down of the 4 crippled reactors within a year it'll be good. We can't expect more under the circumstances. Then another 9 years for decommissioning and clean up will follow. That's the realistic time frame. It won't be sorted out before 2021 and, according to some, this is an optimistic estimate.

  • I expect you're right, that 6 - 9 would be stable. It's just problematic that their first try towards step 1 is already run into a significant problem. On the plus side, flooding to top of active fuel may have inadvertently been achieved, just that the fuel had to melt into the bottom of the RPV for that to occur.

  • Just makes it a bit tougher to clear out -- how the heck do you work with a multi-ton glob of corium? I believe they originally planned to remove the rods, but that likely can't happen now.

  • @Pedro Jesus Absolutely, and the released radioactivity is much safer for the world, to go into the ocean vs. the air. This will be an open ended recovery, no matter who does it. But stage one could go a year (till undamaged fuel removed and secured) and then 10 years for the cleanup. I just hope that a couple of months from now, the priority shifts to the civilian population (children) and they make real efforts to reduce their exposure to rad...that word

  • When Toshiba presented their decommissioning and clean up proposal along with some US companies involved in the TMI clean up they were expecting more fuel damage than the current estimate. Lets hope they had sufficient data then and that the situation does not get much until they get their hands on the plant.

  • @lillymunster @Veen Oui the video gurus, I'm not convinced that there was some "event" last night or sat-sun. They have a regular issue with fog rolling in. It starts low and just builds up. Fog is very effective at dispersing any available light. Last night the consenses was that it all started low and just built up. 15 min later all video was whited out, could it just be fog? No rad... levels changed within the plant perimter. www.tepco.co.jp

  • @RBeaner It was reported today that the Project Team of the Headquarter for Coordination for Accident Counter Measures, organized by the Prime Minister, decided to construct temporary protective structures covered with reinforced plastic sheets, often used for construction of all-weather baseball stadium such as Tokyo Dome, on top of the 1F1, 3 and 4. It is planned to construct them at a place within a reach of a huge self clawling crane and put them in place like a huge cap. Another method being studied is to first construct steel frame structures around the damaged buildings and then cover with the reinforced plastic sheets. An idea is being investigated for providing an ventilation hole to establish filtered venting. TEPCO plans to start construction as early as June. www.ambersharick.com

  • @RBeaner it came in too thick and too fast to be fog. It also happened as the plants were churning out more and more steam and both events coordinated with quakes. We were able to tell when the fog actually rolled in later. It showed up in the lowest areas first and built up to eventually slowly block everything. The two events were clearly different than fog and stayed mostly within the grounds of the plant while everything else was not foggy.
