Radioactive water leaked while being transferred
Tokyo Electric Power Company says an operation to transfer highly radioactive water pooled in the turbine building of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant's No.3 reactor caused contamination of the sea nearby.

Highly radioactive water was found leaking into the sea from a pit near the reactor's water intake on Wednesday.

The utility company says 1,200 becquerels of radioactive cesium 134 were detected in one cubic centimeter of sea water near the water intake on Thursday. The figure is 20,000 times the state limit. 1,200 becquerels of radioactive cesium 137, which is 13,000 times the state limit, were also detected.

The company transferred radioactive water from the turbine building of the No.3 reactor earlier this month. It says during that process radioactive water leaked out from an underground pipe connected to the pit.

The company admitted in a news conference on Thursday that prior inspections to prevent leaks were inadequate.

Last month, highly radioactive water leaked into the ocean from a pit near the No.2 reactor.

@Angie I love being at this party! I looked at the plant parameters and was shocked to see #1' s continued pressure rise. You know they must want to relieve that, but can't. OOps dinner is done brb.

Japan starts shutting down Hamaoka nuclear reactor
TOKYO (AFP) – The operator of Japan's ageing Hamaoka nuclear plant, located near a tectonic faultline southwest of Tokyo, on Friday began shutting down one of its two running reactors, a plant official said.

Chubu Electric Power started installing control rods into the number four reactor of the power plant early Friday, the first procedure in the operation, said Kazuhide Enoo, an official at the plant.

"We plan to stop electricity generation in the morning, and then the reactor is scheduled to be non-critical around noon today," Enoo said...

Simulation Shows High Levels of Radiation Hitting the West in May

The Norwegian Institute for Air Research (Nilo) ran models and forecasts of the radioactive fallout from the Japanese nuclear accident for some time. Nilo has stopped providing such forecasts to the public.

@RBeaner Japan has been jumping through lots of hoops to try to compensate for lost generation capacity by upping at some other facilities including nat gas ones. They are also encouraging companies and people to do things to conserve as much as possible. They are looking ahead to summer. Shutting down Hamaoka was the smart thing to do. It is crazy unstable there.

There has been a concerted effort by the power companies to create need globally in Japan there are neon signs in abundance, highways illuminated extremely brightly and vending machines that outnumber pedestrians at times. There has been a good responnse from the Japanese pulic to requests for conservative usage but you wont see it heralded anywhere because it would afftect profit forecasts.
And hamaoka came to agreement with goj that will see them compensated for their losses during the extended shutdown whilch is bloody farcical why should the japanese taxpayer compensate a company for having to ensure their plant is safety compliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
