quote- "I am particularly interested in:

What you know or understand about the facts surrounding the events in Japan; and
What you draw from these facts about the lessons that might be learnt to enhance the safety of nuclear facilities in the UK or any prospective new nuclear power stations.
I should emphasise that the information submitted should be technically based and relevant to the events in Japan, and not about nuclear or energy policy issues as these are outside the role and responsibilities of the nuclear regulator.

My report will be produced in an open and transparent way. I therefore intend to publish all submissions on ONR’s website as they are received, so please do not send anything that is copyright"

  • @Lethbridgean I haven't seen any evidence that shows that the rods in SFP#4 were ever exposed. There is no damage visible in the video, as far as it shows. The NRC saiod it went dry, that is obviously incorrect. Every sample of sfp 4 has shown somewhat elevated radioactivity, but from the levels I have seen, they were relatively low
    by RBeaner 5/18/2011 5:52:34 PM

  • RBeaner, incorrect assumption, it had to go dry for the rods to interact and cause a hydrogen explosion. That is the only location in the building that had any rods to allow that to happen.
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:02:42 PM

  • @wtm according tio TEPCO, the Hydrogen in Reactor Building 4 came from R3 through damaged duct. Good explanation to me cause it is able to explain the damage in the lower levels, diff from damage to 1 and 3.
    by RBeaner 5/18/2011 6:07:21 PM

  • The flip side, of course, is that in April when TEPCO finally did officially check #4 SFP temp they had a "whoops, really hot" moment, and proceeded to inundate it with water for the next week.

  • back for awhile.. hello to all
    by dean 5/18/2011 6:09:30 PM

  • @Markfm yea it was hot temp wise, but the radioactivity was fairly low. Low enough to be explained by fallout?? not sure but to low for fuel damage imho

    by Panserbjorne9 5/18/2011 6:11:29 PM

  • @Dean, just read the stats for the reactors above, the TEPCO one is translated in english. Note the #2 stats for D/W (RPV bellows seal) is listed as "Overscale".
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:13:46 PM

  • @dean me?????????? I was thinking more of all you who know what you are talking about submitting something
    !! !!!!
    by elainekirk 5/18/2011 6:13:46 PM

  • I anyone aware of data or anything specifying the visible differences in the strucutre of Unit 1 (with it's blowout-panel upper-deck walls) and Units 3 and 4 that had reinforced concrete walls all the way up to the roof? Both building types are Mark I design, and schematics of the Mark I can be one or the other type, but surely each subtype of the Mark I containment has a unique name and story.
    by Ian 5/18/2011 6:13:53 PM

  • @Ian It's a bit hard to compare exactly because they were different structures around different versions of the BWR reactors inside.
    by RadioGuy 5/18/2011 6:16:34 PM

  • checking wtm

  • @Panserbjorne9 I think you did just fine :)
    by RadioGuy 5/18/2011 6:26:07 PM

  • @Lethbridgean do you want to borrow my scythe?
    by Panserbjorne9 5/18/2011 6:27:58 PM

  • @Dean, wonder how long that has been that way, and we didn't know because of translations on the other stats from METI and JAIF ? If that is correct there is something bad going on in the D/W there.
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:30:10 PM

  • @Leth, expand on your comment please ?
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:30:31 PM

  • @Dean, wonder how high their scale is on that particular meter ?
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:32:20 PM

  • Given they have two RPV temps, and the one DW temp, within the same ballpark, RPV bellows being overscale should be an instrument failure/gross miscalibration.
    by Markfm 5/18/2011 6:33:38 PM

  • @MarkFM, or would it be an indication of corium melt going on in the D/W with the heat pushing up top.
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:35:11 PM

  • Wouldn't make sense, at least to me. RPV bellows is at the top edge, HVH near bottom IIRC. Since HVH is not much over 100C, hard to come up with some corium, which should be at/near the bottom, not impacting the HVH temp reading yet pushing a reading further up to overscale.

  • @RadioGuy, all I'm wondering is if there are different names for the different versions of Mark I?
    by Ian 5/18/2011 6:38:29 PM

  • @MarkFM, then it would have to be a direct short on the metering line to put the meter to full overscale.
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:38:37 PM

  • @Ian, YEP.....Old and New !!!!! LOL
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:39:18 PM

  • Am I the only person who has seen 'Mark I', 'Mark II' for the past two months and immediately thought of Iron Man?
    by Panserbjorne9 5/18/2011 6:40:59 PM

  • Multiple of their instruments have had acknowledged problems. Not knowing the precise temp sensors I would not necessarily have any conclusion on failure modes; some of the things I work with use current loops and a resistor going bad can throw them off scale, stuff happens.
by Markfm edited by Markfm 5/18/2011 6:42:14 PM

  • @MarkFM, yep, all it takes is a little short someplace ? "Underscale" would be an open, "Overscale" would be a short !
    by wtm 5/18/2011 6:48:28 PM

  • @Nancy I thought of you the whole time I did those screen shots :)
