  • @jt I lived on islands long enough to have seen some pretty interesting lighting effects when you combine low overcast/fog with a light source under it striping out as a long reflection from the ocean, so a transient sunrise effect with the sun and cloud layers is surely possible too. But then, that's why it's still the MBF.
    by radioguy 5/24/2011 3:40:49 PM

  • @radioguy At dusk your light source is the setting sun after it has set below the horizon. At dawn your light source is the rising sun before it rises above the horizon.
    by jt 5/24/2011 3:41:14 PM

  • @radioguy I grew up in Australia. I have seen quite a few sunrises on the Pacific Ocean. And its coast at sunset.

  • hi radioguy.. I was checking out the spreadsheets.. was nancy going to do anything with them to clean up the titles and reduce the column size?.. I was also wondering if there would be some merit to breaking the days up and have a last column for comments/major activities and put them in for each day.. just highlights,, that may correspond to level increases and decreases..
    by dean 5/24/2011 3:45:32 PM

  • OOPS.. Ian would you please post that link again .. I goofed up
    by dean 5/24/2011 3:47:27 PM

  • oh I have it
    by dean 5/24/2011 3:47:50 PM

  • Thanks guys! :) Just a preview. It's driving me crazy how long the full video is taking, so I figured I might post some snippets of the full video. The video's getting so complex my computer's having trouble handling it, crashing a lot.
    by Ian 5/24/2011 3:48:18 PM

  • @ian - that video is brilliant (and confirms what Arnie Gundersen postulated)
    by hudebnik 5/24/2011 3:48:27 PM

  • @dean I just set it up to suck the CSVs from TEPCO straight in. The days are as they post them in the CSV. Anyone can grab the data and make us a static one. The function I'm using is:

=importData("URLofCSVorWhatever") There are other qualifiers you can use with itm but that's the basics. That's what these are.
    by radioguy 5/24/2011 3:48:36 PM

  • @jt - the pink pics were taken at 1906 JST when dusk falling. I wasn't aware of any direct sunlight by then - it was almost twilight but even if there had been it would have been setting (a) behind the camera and (b) behind the mountains not over water.
    by hudebnik 5/24/2011 3:55:34 PM

  • @dean am improved. thanks
    by Meretisa 5/24/2011 3:57:33 PM

  • @dean I can assign you editor status, move the import down a row so there's a locked row for our headers and you could fill in the correct headers for the columns?
    by radioguy 5/24/2011 3:58:20 PM

  • @ hudebnik You are not looking at the east facing part of things in that image. You are looking at the west facing part of things in that image that are lit by the setting sun. The sun is below the horizon but its light is refracted through the atmosphere. The light IS from behind the camera. How do you think you see things at dusk?

    by dean 5/24/2011 4:01:04 PM

  • I'm working right now radioguy.. but will try later..
    by dean 5/24/2011 4:01:28 PM

  • @dean We'll work it out. For now the data is there and available. I could always grab the historic csv files and we could edit those, then just use the other for the new feeds.

  • Salutations scribblers! I see that the TEPCO 'revelations' about the staus of #2 & 3 have not aroused stirrings of interest in the media There is a small mention on BBC website, nothing on BBC Radio 4 or on World Service. No shock horror headlines. The nuke publicity machine & press self censorship seem to be running effectively & the public have been carefully prepared to see this as just another item in a flood of info from TEPCO which they can safely ignore. Grrrrr

  • Obama Administration Creates ‘Director of Progressive Media & Online Response’ Position For Rapid Response To Unfavorable Stories
Posted On May 24 Global News WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has created and staffed a new position tucked inside their communications shop for helping coordinate rapid response to unfavorable stories and fostering and improving relations with the progressive online community.

“This week, Jesse Lee will move from the new media department into a role in the communications department as Director of Progressive Media & Online Response,” read an internal memo from Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer, provided to The Huffington Post. “For the last two years, Jesse has often worn two hats working in new media and serving as the White House’s liaison with the progressive media and online community. Starting this week, Jesse will take on the second role full time working on outreach, strategy and response.”

The post is a new one for this White House. Rapid response has been the purview of the Democratic National Committee (and will continue to be). Lee’s hire, however, suggests that a portion of it will now be handled from within the administration. It also signals that the White House will be adopting a more aggressive engagement in the online world in the months ahead. www.infiniteunknown.net

  • US Scientist Concluded Reactor 1 Meltdown Occurred 3.5 Hours After Power Loss, Reported To The IAEA In Late March – TEPCO Admitted Reactor 1 Meltdown On MAY 15 A US researcher Chris Allison did the simulation of one of the Fukushima reactors (Reactor 1) and concluded that the meltdown occurred 3.5 hours after the cooling system stopped. It was reported to the IAEA in late March.

So they all knew, except for the hapless citizens of Japan and the rest of the world.

Or they say “Oh we didn’t know for sure until May 15 when TEPCO finally announced it,” like Japan’s PM Kan has said.

We do not know for sure, because no one has looked inside the RPV and reported back to us. All we can do is to collect the evidence and hypothesize, and that has been pointing to a meltdown. Even the PM Assistant has admitted that they knew it was a meltdown early on.

Here’s the summary of the simulation by Allison, as described in the Mainichi English article (linked below): www.infiniteunknown.net

  • A few facts about radiation and health Beyond Nuclear 24 March 2011
The National Academy of Sciences 2005 BEIR VII report recognizes that there is no safe dose of radiation as affirmed by several radiation researchers. Women and children are particularly susceptible.

After the accident at Three Mile Island there were elevated rates of cancer within the radioactive plum pathways the reactor released, according to a 1997 study.

More recent studies, such as Kaatsch, et. al, in 2008 and Baker and Hoel, 2007 meta-analysis, have shown that normally operating reactors, ones that have supposedly not had accidents, have elevated rates of childhood leukemia around them.

A scientific review by Belson, et. al, 2007 states that “Only one environmental risk factor (ionizing radiation) has been significantly linked to” childhood leukemia.

Also see Beyond Nuclear's new fact sheet [included below] about radiation and the health hazards it poses. www.ratical.com
