• @Lethbridgean So what has Ron Paul said about the Fukushima situation, and radiation in the US? He is a part of the problem. And I even like him.
by Bobby1 5/24/2011 5:43:25 PM

• @Nancy documentation of requests makes a difference, if its not documented it doesn't exist the more we request information the greater the impact when information is released and publicity as to why is wasn't released . . .

• @Nancy, did anything come of that bright glow in the lower right of #4 yesterday ?

•
Tokyo Electric, better known as Tepco, has an interest in concluding that the quake did not cause the crisis since that could trigger a more costly review of power plants across Japan, said Sophia University's Nakano.

"It could very well be that Tepco is rushing to conclude that the tsunami is to blame to prevent further questions and give more momentum to the nuclear camp. It's not just Tepco, it's the whole nuclear industry, maybe business circles as a whole. It's highly political," he said.
Source: uk.reuters.com
by WolfDK 5/24/2011 6:23:47 PM

• @WolfDK Hmm do we need to turn all that research on TEPCO's past into a report or an article or something? Or send it somewhere? TEPCO has a LONG track record of not doing anything. After 2007 they were supposed to do EQ testing and make changes. They did some pointless minor changes and called it a day. Meanwhile Chubu shut down their two indentical reactors because it would cost too much to retrofit. The puzzle piece missing right now is that document from Chubu that outlined why they were not going to upgrade and mentions of the possible work needed. I saw a web page on their site in passing early on and didn't save it. That is the piece of info we need to tie it all together. TEPCO was massively negligent
by Nancy 5/24/2011 6:28:49 PM

• GoJ should have removed TEPCO from this situation completely and allowed an indepenent task force to take over. Why should the fate of the world be left in the hands of a private company, who care only about their own interests, have demonstrated many times in the past that they cannot be trusted and have made pathetic progess in handling this global disaster? It is APPALLING beyond words!

If the GoJ won't take proper control and responsibility, the other nations of the world should act decisively, and quickly. Enough is enough - time for truth and action. It is OUR world!

• RE the chilly article Tenzing posted a page back:
Obama Administration Creates ‘Director of Progressive Media & Online Response’ Position For Rapid Response To Unfavorable Stories
White House Beefs Up Online Rapid Response (Huffington Post, May 23, 2011):

There was an excess of "unfavorable" euphemisms and btwn-the-lines speak in that article. But here's some info on the new internet czar - tasked with *improving relations with the online community*:

www.whorunsgov.com
JESSE LEE
Lee graduated with a degree in philosophy from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut in 2002.
Trinity's Motto: "For the Church and For the Nation". However it wasn't until 1969 that they would allow women or "minorities" at the college. Noted Trinity alumni include George Will and Tucker Carlson. It is listed amongst the "preppiest" of colleges and considered a "feeder" for the Ivy League schools. He was hired to do Internet work for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) in 2003, and worked in their online division from 2004 to 2006. Lee worked in online outreach during the Presidential transition of Barack Obama, in the New Media department. On February 23, 2009, President Barack Obama announced Lee was hired as Online Programs Director for his administration.

As the online guru during the first two years of the Obama White House, he was tasked with mending the occasionally contentious relationship between left-wing bloggers and Beltway politicians, harnessing the netroots reach and passion to spread the administration’s message.<-- MONEY QUOTE.
by ms in la 5/24/2011 6:40:14 PM

• So to reiterate Lee's gig: He is hired to "mend" bloggers contentious relationships with Washington -- by "harnessing" their "reach and passion" to "spread the administration's message". Think about what this might mean in terms of the administration's nuclear energy policies... just as an example....
by ms in la 5/24/2011 6:44:17 PM

• @ms, Think re-elect Obama there, nothing negative should be said or printed !!!
by wtm 5/24/2011 6:56:58 PM

• @ms in la - Good point ms. From now on I shall refer to this person "Lee" as General Lee Astroturfer. Or General Lee for short.
by Lethbridgean 5/24/2011 6:57:07 PM

• @all, with that story about the Obama admin's new PR post, expect that we will soon be getting a poster on this blob that will try to push the Admin's stance on all the information we post here. Coming soon !!!
by wtm 5/24/2011 6:58:42 PM

• @all, the Admin also now has the power to "Blacklist" all U.S. web sites that it feels are not to their liking !

• @wtm There's nothing new in this stance it just sounds as if they're getting more proactive and attempting to "harness" the netroots is always a unwieldy task! I Shall Not Be Harnessed! :)
by ms in la 5/24/2011 7:08:39 PM

• @wtm black list from what?
by Nancy 5/24/2011 7:10:35 PM

• @Nancy - He means that the government can shut down a website at will.
by Lethbridgean 5/24/2011 7:11:47 PM

• @you I really doubt that and saw nothing in that article that said they were able or going to do that.
by Nancy 5/24/2011 7:15:20 PM

• @Nancy - haha. Really? I wasn't refering to that article. That article is just announcing the main go to "astroturfer" for Obama. There have been numerous websites shut down in the last 6 months because of every reason under the sun. Search it out if you doubt that.
by Lethbridgean 5/24/2011 7:19:35 PM

• www.rawstory.com DHS shutting down 1000's of websites without a court order....
by Lethbridgean 5/24/2011 7:24:02 PM

• @Lethbridgean My point was related to the astroturf tzar specifically. If DHS is playing gestapo again that is an issue.
by Nancy 5/24/2011 7:36:53 PM

• So far most of those were not opinion sites but were copyright infringment. I really take issue at how the govt. resources are being used for something that is a civil matter between parties.
by Nancy 5/24/2011 7:38:57 PM

• @Nancy - The latest push is to shut down sites that repost copyrighted material. It really is selective and upto the "powers that be".

• Multiple 10-Centimeter Holes in Reactor 2 Containment Vessel

So says the Mainichi Shinbun reporters who must be reading the report submitted by TEPCO on May 23 and released on May 24.

Multiple 10-centimeter holes in the Reactor 2 Containment Vessel, and one 7-centimeter hole in the Reactor 1 Containment Vessel.

Hiroaki Koide of Kyoto University was so right. The Containment Vessels' integrity has been long gone. TEPCO should have known all along, and all the experts, including Koide, must have known.

From Mainichi Shinbun Japanese (2:30AM JST 5/25/2011):

東京電力が24日公表した福島第1原発2、3号機で炉心溶融があったとする報告書の中で、1号機は原子炉圧力容器の外側にある格納容器に直径7センチ相当の穴、2号機では格納容器に直径10センチ相当の複数の穴が開いている可能性が初めて示された。

In the report that TEPCO disclosed on May 24 regarding the core meltdown in the Reactors 2 and 3, the possibility of holes in the Containment Vessels of the Reactors 1 and 2 is mentioned for the first time. The Reactor 1 Containment Vessel may have a hole 7-centimeter in diameter, and the Reactor 2 Containment vessel may have multiple holes 10-centimeter in diameter.

According to the Mainichi article, TEPCO came to the conclusion of multiple 10-centimeter holes in the Reactor 2 Containment Vessel and one 7-centimeter hole in the Reactor 1 Containment Vessel from the analysis of the pressure data.
by Veenie 5/24/2011 8:12:19 PM

• @Veenie And they know the exact diameters how? Apparently they're going with the graphite control gaskets in R2, but what for the 7cm hole in R1?
by radioguy 5/24/2011 8:16:56 PM
