  • Fukushima prepares for heavy rain
The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is preparing for an approaching powerful typhoon by piling up sandbags and moving cranes to a safe place.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says heavy rain is expected in the area around the power plant beginning on Sunday night. In some areas, torrential rain and strong wind are expected from Monday to Tuesday.

Tokyo Electric Power Company is piling up sandbags around electric facility buildings and sealing the doors to keep rainwater out.

The company says if rain and wind become intense, all operations except for patrolling will stop.

The level of contaminated water in the turbine buildings of the Number 2 and 3 reactors and tunnels has been rising.

The company says it will closely monitor the level to prevent contaminated water from overflowing and seeping into ground water and the sea.

The utility is also studying ways to stop radioactive substances deposited on debris and buildings from being washed away by rain and flowing into the sea via gutters.

  • It's been a busy 24-36 hours. We have learned: 1. Reactor #5 lost cooling 2. Re-criticality in #1 3. Radioactive iodine heading for west coast 4. Large amounts of nuclear material in stratosphere 5. Plutonium detected in Matsudo, Japan... I'm sorry I'm behind. can I get a link to the iodine, the stratosphere, adn plutonium things?? please. thanks.

"Because of the high radiation, I'd assume the workers won't be able to build the cooling system that strongly," he said, confirming that it might not be able to hold up if big aftershocks occur."

  • @Ralph Unger I liked this biot: ""The first thing is to make a circulating cooling system by processing the water, and then Tepco will have to wait until the fuel gets cooled," said the Tokyo Institute of Technology's Takeshita. "I think the only option is to process and circulate it" because of all the leaks."
    by RadioGuy 5/29/2011 5:10:12 AM

  • So, um, kind of like using a soaker hose for water tranport?
    by RadioGuy 5/29/2011 5:11:10 AM

  • Yep circulating work very well when you have many leaks in the system, LOL.
by Ralph Unger 5/29/2011 5:11:25 AM

  • At ¥210,000 per ton to process the tainted water, the leaks are just good news for TEPCO.

  • @All, please read my next post (article) and weigh in on whether or not you think this might be something of interest for the group - The NRC are coming to CA as part of their Inspect the US NPP's Tour - to inspect Diablo Cyn and hold a public meeting in San Luis Obispo that evening on the safety issues. I was suggesting earlier that a small number of us from the area might make an appearance.... to engage the seemingly unengageable NRC at the Q & A and report back, via video or audio, dep on what's permitted. I'd be happy to make the drive up and welcome any other Californians as well. Any questions we might propose should probably be submitted by dean or other members with nuclear expertise so that the most critical issues might be presented in what would surely be very limited time frames (esp given Gunderson only got 5 minutes!).

Here is the info and stay tuned for the article next. Let me know your thoughts pls!

June 15, 2011-- public meeting scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel, in San Luis Obispo, NRC staff will brief the public on the Diablo Canyon plant’s 2010 safety performance.

  • NRC inspects Diablo Canyon nuclear plant

STATEMENT by VICTOR DRICKS - NRC Region IV Senior Public Affairs Officer.

Following the accident on March 11 at the Fukushima Diaichi Nuclear Site in Japan the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) decided to assess the capabilities of the nation’s 104 nuclear power plants to respond to severe events. We looked at the possible impact of fires and flooding in combination with earthquakes following major losses of plant equipment and off-site power.

We did identify some areas for improvement at Diablo Canyon and Pacific Gas & Electric has indicated they will take appropriate actions to correct deficiencies. But largely overlooked amid the flurry of news reports was the fact that overall, none of the findings are significant enough to undermine our confidence in the ability of Diablo Canyon and other plants to respond to catastrophic accidents. We found a high level of preparedness and strong capability in terms of equipment and procedures to respond to severe events. Licensees have taken corrective actions and further NRC inspections are planned.

Jane Swanson of Mothers for Peace has noted that the NRC has identified many inspection findings at Diablo Canyon. This is true. But it is important to note that all of these findings had very low safety significance. More progress needs to be made in addressing issues involving problem identification and resolution. NRC intends to conduct focused inspections in this area to ensure that occurs. We invite interested members of the community to attend our June 15 meeting to discuss these issues and meet face-to-face with NRC with staff.

  • After the way the NRC treated Gunderson, does anyone think they will listen to anyone?
by Ralph Unger 5/29/2011 5:32:40 AM

  • @Ralph Unger No. But they are taking questions so it would be more about getting a response from them rather than them listening to us.
by ms in la 5/29/2011 5:37:04 AM

  • They were gonna add 2 plant to the South Texas plant but TEPCO's problems stopped that. I live in Houston.
by Ralph Unger 5/29/2011 5:38:52 AM

  • Lucky you! We have the fault lines, the sea the same system as Fuku and no real viable earthquake emergency plan... it's considered the most controversial plant after Chernobyl. It's a very timely issue in that their license is up for renewal... I'm asking on other board to see how many Californians we have.
by ms in la 5/29/2011 5:42:31 AM

  • @Ralph Unger That sure was a sham, made me angry!
    by deb 5/29/2011 5:44:59 AM

  • @msinla...unfortunately I think that your best bet for actually being listened to (and they would probably cancel it first) would be if the tropical storm took out the structures and made things a whole lot worse at Daiichi.
