  • They have a big problem there.
by Ralph Unger 5/29/2011 6:41:47 AM

  • I did not even know that there was a Cs 136. But I bet it's half-life is huge.
by Ralph Unger 5/29/2011 6:44:02 AM

  • I would be more scared if the half-life was shorter, the decay events are what damages human tissue. So I-131 which goes away in a few weeks is more dangerous the CS-137 which takes many years to decay. As the particles decay they can damage you, if internal they can be really damaging as in I-131 for the thyroid. No one knows how radioactive particles can effect the human body. Does all radioactivity do damage? is a small bit actually good? Some say yes. I think it is all damaging , but we must put up with a certain amount as we live under the sun.

  • I am in Kochi, near Ashizuri cape. The weather has not been too bad so far, although the the water in the rice fields is getting quite high and could soon run out onto the roads in some places a little. Nothing dramatic here though

  • Where is the new iodine coming from -- official explanation, real reason, or both?
    by bojack54 5/29/2011 9:39:31 AM

  • @bojack54 - If you mean per map below, I believe that's just a projection of "Potential" dispersal based on actual weather.
by Rob in SF 5/29/2011 9:48:14 AM

  • @Rob in SF I meant elaine's German animation.
    by bojack54 5/29/2011 9:52:03 AM

  • Hi @bojack54 - we were theorising yesterday that maybe the hugely oscillating (and high) radiation readings in #1 drywell indicate continuing intermittent fission episodes. www.tepco.co.jp (right at bottom of document). According to that rad readings above 200Sv/hr (yes, Sv/hr) were recorded twice today 29 May. Either the sensor if faulty (Tepco's explanation) or it is showing an inconvenient truth (and it has been providing continuous not intermittent readings).

  • And now some better news for a change - Cooling systems restored for fuel pools
The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has now successfully restored cooling systems to the spent fuel pools of reactors 1, 2, 3 and 4.
On Saturday, TEPCO injected about 5 tons of water to the spent fuel pool of reactor 1 on a test basis. It was the last system to be restored.
The power company is also working to install new water-circulating systems that will more efficiently cool all the fuel pools. The new systems for reactors 1 through 4 are scheduled for completion by July.

  • @bojack - google does quite well if you include www.scribblelive.com in the search terms
    by hudebnik 5/29/2011 10:06:20 AM

  • Sometimes scribble is too clever - I mean the full URL of this board#

  • @MARKFM - this is for you especially as one
of our reactor stats experts when you check in. What do you make of the temperature trends in graphs? www.tepco.co.jp www.tepco.co.jp www.tepco.co.jp #1 stableish, #2 has some extremely high temp sensor readings again, #3 temps trending up again.
