  • @Edano Depending on how you set your end up, we could do this the same way as the live reactor readings, just point to a static picture name that you copy the latest to, make a page on the site that calls the pic by that name, and it will update whenever it looks for the image.
    by radioguy 5/29/2011 6:17:54 PM

  • @Edano Thank you for adding the info-graphics.
    by Reed 5/29/2011 6:18:02 PM

  • @radioguy : no, i want to update it directly.
    by Edano 5/29/2011 6:19:38 PM

  • OK... your call. There's just so much work to be done I'm looking for ways to automate as much of it as possible.
    by radioguy 5/29/2011 6:20:36 PM

  • @radioguy : but it is the same. the pics have to be uploaded to a static address, so the best is to upload them directly to ftp.houseoffoust.com.

Tepco installs backup unit 15 hours later for halted reactor

    By REIJI YOSHIDA

The seawater pump in the cooling system for the Fukushima power plant's No. 5 reactor broke down Saturday evening, prompting repair crews to install a backup pump 15 hours later on Sunday afternoon, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

Tepco discovered the pump had stopped at 9 p.m. Saturday but didn't announce it to the public until Sunday morning. search.japantimes.co.jp

  • Stabilizing reactors by year's end may be impossible: Tepco
    Kyodo
Stabilizing the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant by the end of the year may be impossible, senior officials at Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sunday, throwing a monkey wrench into plans to let evacuees return to their homes near the plant.

The confirmation of core meltdowns hitting reactors 1 through 3, accompanied by breaches to the critical pressure vessels that hold the nuclear fuel, has led officials to believe that "there will be a major delay to work" to contain the situation, one official said. search.japantimes.co.jp

  • @Edano I will have to see if I can give someone just one directory level through FTP otherwise that isnt going to fly. Wordpress handles pictures differently than raw web pages so there may be some extra challenges to get this working.

  • Potatoes may be more dangerous than other vegetables
    2011/05/29
    Satoshi Otani and Keishi Nishimura

Potatoes may be more liable to be contaminated by radioactive materials released by the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant than other types of fruits and vegetables, according to a study by Japan's agriculture ministry.

Researchers looked at the absorption rates of 17 types of vegetables and four fruits and found that sweet potatoes and potatoes were significantly more likely to take in radioactive materials than other fruits and leafy vegetables.

The maximum absorption rate of a sweet potato was 17 times higher than that for a lettuce, for instance...

While Tokyo Electric Power Co. plans to set up a water treatment facility in mid-June to decontaminate the thousands of tons of radioactive water being generated at the Fukushima No. 1 power plant, the utility must also find a safe place to store it before it leaks into the ground or finds its way to the sea. search.japantimes.co.jp

  • @Nancy : well, basically i just need a static address where i can put the plots. i don't have any. it just would be practical to put them directly where you want them.

  • @panser methinks tepco and goj are gonna need more than duck tape to fix the fractures between themselves and their victims

  • Typhoon precautions
    The Yomiuri Shimbun

Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Saturday said it would take steps to prevent typhoons from undermining its efforts to defuse the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

Specific actions to be taken include using ropes to fasten hoses that are needed for the transfer of contaminated water from the turbine buildings of the Nos. 2 and 3 reactors to a central waste treatment facility.

TEPCO will also strengthen ropes mooring a megafloat on which the firm plans to store contaminated water.

A pump truck used to channel water into the temporary storage pool for spent nuclear fuel rods at the No. 4 reactor building will be moved away from the facility, and its arms will be retracted to prevent the vehicle from toppling, the utility said.

To prevent wind and rain from spreading radioactive materials adhered to the exterior of the turbine building of reactor No. 1, TEPCO sprayed 13,500 liters of antiscattering agents on the walls Friday, using a water cannon truck owned by the Tokyo Fire Department. www.yomiuri.co.jp

  • @Nancy @Edano We should set up a Dropbox.com account for SimplyInfo, dedicate it mostly public, and use it as a spot to host images like Edano's.

    The Yomiuri Shimbun

MITO--The board of education in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture, has stopped using agricultural products from the prefecture in school lunches due to concerns over radioactive contamination, a move local agriculture and livestock farmers are saying will fuel harmful, unfounded rumors. www.yomiuri.co.jp

  • @radioguy could we use that instead of an ftp in the code etc?
    by Nancy 5/29/2011 6:38:26 PM

  • @panser I think the schools board does right , those farmers should have independent crop tests conducted at Tepco's expense and be properly compensated if crops are found to be contaminated

  • @elainekirk AGREED!
    by Panserbjorne9 5/29/2011 6:41:25 PM

  • @Nancy: i just need that: ftp://houseoffoust.com/ and the directory where you want the pics.
    by Edano 5/29/2011 6:43:24 PM

  • I've used a Dropbox folder to serve an entire site in a pinch. Slower of course, but if all you're drawing is an image or small doc it's not much overhead. That particular option may not be exactly the one, but something like that. we'll look at this. I have my own Dropboxes that I can put files in and you could draw from them now. You lose anonymity a little, but how anonymous are we anyway? ;)
    by radioguy 5/29/2011 6:46:21 PM

  • @Edano Sorry I am not giving you root access to my web server. I can see if I can assign an ftp access to just one directory and was going to do so but you need to give me time to do it. I need to find out if Radioguy's solution will work. I would rather use the dropbox.com if we can.
    by Nancy 5/29/2011 6:46:23 PM

  • @radioguy can you ftp to your dropbox folder?
    by Nancy 5/29/2011 6:46:51 PM

  • @Nancy : sorry, but i think you offered me that some days ago.
    by Edano 5/29/2011 6:48:48 PM

  • @Nancy I just put the file in the folder on my desktop, and it's available in the public folder anywhere. I have to run out, but I'll give this some thought.
    by radioguy 5/29/2011 6:49:57 PM

  • @Edano Um no.
    by Nancy 5/29/2011 6:52:12 PM

  • If radioguy can deal with the photos via dropbox in a way that works with the code that would be my first choice. I checked on my hosting and I can add additional users at the directory level so if the dropbox.com comes back as not an option I will get that set up.
    by Nancy 5/29/2011 6:54:36 PM

  • @Nancy : dropbox is a program you have to install on your hd. this is not an option, because it cannot be automatized.
    by Edano 5/29/2011 6:56:00 PM

  • @Edano I wasn't sure, their website had no info.
    by Nancy 5/29/2011 7:07:10 PM

  • @Edano, set up a directory level ftp for you to drop stuff. It takes about an hour for their systems to update. Will check it to make sure it works and email you all the FTP information to get in. Do you want me to make the placemarkers with the # sign in front of the name as you posted?
