  • @smoss Hmm, the close up shot of the ground at the end. Wonder what that was about....
    by lillymunster 6/13/2011 4:19:22 AM

  • @nancy I was actually admiring the "silly putty" comparison shot. There was a Japanese translator who used to float in and out. I still post vids in hopes that he/she will offer help again.

  • @all Must say "Bye" for now! Be Well!
    by smoss 6/13/2011 4:22:45 AM

  • @smoss Rough translation of the audio or even the text on the images might be enough to figure out what that is. The video looks very clandestine like someone did it without TEPCO approval.

  • Together with caesium isotopes 134Cs, 137Cs, and iodine isotope 131I it was among the most important isotopes regarding health impacts after the Chernobyl disaster.

Strontium-90 is a "bone seeker" that exhibits biochemical behavior similar to calcium, the next lighter Group 2 element. After entering the organism, most often by ingestion with contaminated food or water, about 70–80% of the dose gets excreted. Virtually all remaining strontium-90 is deposited in bones and bone marrow, with the remaining 1% remaining in blood and soft tissues. Its presence in bones can cause bone cancer, cancer of nearby tissues, and leukemia. Exposure to 90Sr can be tested by a bioassay, most commonly by urinalysis

  • @lillymunster But now we have 4 cards on the table.

    by lillymunster 6/13/2011 4:38:14 AM

  • Hey folks, I just had a Japanese friend watch the video and here is the content spoken. It is a clip from TBS news channel on June 10th. They report that TEPCO has a plan to install some kind of pipe that would remove cesium from the radioactive water and make the water "useable" again, but the device is untested and they have run into a snag in installing it. They expect to install it four days later than planned.
    by bo 6/13/2011 4:42:22 AM

  • I'm thinking there are lots more shoes in Tepco's closet.
    by marierich 6/13/2011 4:42:24 AM

  • @bo Wow surprised TEPCO hadn't mentioned this. They showed the water filtration run (the hall with lots of metal boxes). Maybe they are trying to reuse what they filter rather than dumping it. That would make sense.

  • @elainekirk I'll check it now. I was still undecided between going back to bed or staying here for a while but I just made up my mind... I'll sleep later.
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 8:49:39 AM

    by elainekirk 6/13/2011 9:04:57 AM

  • @elainekirk Well, a nice insight of how the powers-that-be work in the background to maintain their status-quo. Nothing I read on that article really surprises me. We have the same political mambo-jambo pulling strings in Portugal. Luckily we are not a nuclear power, but the corruption is in all energy sectors and usually involves people who are at high positions in the Government. Even our former Prime-Minister who was forced to step down in light of the many scandals and also the crisis situation that we're going through, has been tied up to some scandals regarding construction and energy companies. Btw, I'll have a cup. =)
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 9:05:35 AM

  • @pedro there seems to be no real info coming out officially so the call for more information to be available from iaea was without teeth
    by elainekirk 6/13/2011 9:08:18 AM

  • this is strange the tepco Japanese site has 1 update for the 13th www.tepco.co.jp and the English site has 3 www.tepco.co.jp none of them tell us anything but
    by elainekirk 6/13/2011 9:12:00 AM

  • We will have some info on the radiation levels in the Pacific Ocean soon, from WHOI. They've been having problems with the bad weather but they're pushing forward according to plan. That information will give us a very good idea of what is going on at Fukushima regarding the contaminated water and it's destiny. If they are dumping it into the ocean we will find out very soon (in a matter of days).
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 9:12:27 AM

  • I do hope so I can't help but remember how the Greenpeace results seemed to be suppressed
    by elainekirk 6/13/2011 9:15:28 AM

  • Well, they're still juggling with the contaminated water. I wonder if they will be able to have the filtering systems ready before they run out of space. I hope it doesn't rain in the next few weeks (is it asking too much?).
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 9:15:59 AM

  • Well, Greenpeace results were mainly projections. They didn't take that many samples, as far as I know. These expedition by WHOI is the first one to do a comprehensive scientific study of the situation, particularly because they will have access to certain areas off-shore Fukushima that no one else had access to before. They should release some data in a few days. But most of the analysis will take weeks, months or even years to be completed.
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 9:19:18 AM

  • @pedro I recall edano saying that the groundwater under the site doesnt feed into the drinking water system it feeds into the sea so...
    by elainekirk 6/13/2011 9:19:32 AM

  • I hope he's right. I guess they must have taken that into account before building the plant. Too bad they didn't think about a potential tsunami back in the 60s. But who would anticipate a M9.0 earthquake, anyway?
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 9:22:41 AM

  • By the way, what ever happened to that 10,000 ton capacity barge? Did TEPCO use it at all or are they only using the temporary tanks?
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 9:28:51 AM

  • @pedro we keep trying to work out where they are I dont like it
    by elainekirk 6/13/2011 9:29:47 AM

  • @pedro due to tsunami risk they surely cannot leave anything moored on that coast so my instinct tells me it is floating around the ocean
