but it's the same game every night, and nothing happens.
by Edano 6/13/2011 6:09:29 PM
@Edano Thats a good thing in my book, sure hope this night is no different
by WolfDK 6/13/2011 6:10:08 PM
@edano It's not the same every night...
by LM 6/13/2011 6:10:09 PM
@Edano I've been thinking the same for the last 2 months. But it's worth keeping an eye on those cams, anyway.
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 6:10:35 PM
@Edano the steam show is pretty common. I haven't seen 4 be this intense since they put up the TEPCO cam. My larger worry is that they are slowly having more problems keeping the temp down in the SFP rather than a fire.
by lillymunster 6/13/2011 6:10:39 PM
@lillymunster You said it yourself "what support structure" would it be insane to imagine that load and thermal stresses have cracked the SFP, requiring a larger water flow to keep it full (covered)
by WolfDK 6/13/2011 6:12:31 PM
What time is it in Tokyo right now?
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 6:12:38 PM

by elainekirk 6/13/2011 6:14:41 PM
steam/smoke is starting to engulf everything.
by lillymunster 6/13/2011 6:14:47 PM
Thanks, it just to make sure. It's same time as in Seoul.
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 6:14:58 PM
@elainekirk Go figure. I really want to know why we get steam shows BEFORE quakes.
by lillymunster 6/13/2011 6:15:19 PM
Italy voted against nuclear bunga bunga ! > 90 % !
by Edano 6/13/2011 6:15:23 PM
@lillymunster Yep i dont care this is different, there is a huge amount !
by WolfDK 6/13/2011 6:15:26 PM
Anybody noticed that the bright flashes (artifacts.. if you say so) increases in frequency when there is steamshows ?
by WolfDK 6/13/2011 6:17:50 PM
@WolfDK as far as the SPF. TEPCO says it has structural issues and leaks. It lost some of the support on the outer side when the walls were damaged. There is speculation the fuel gate is leaking because it requires air to refill the gasket and keep a good seal. The image of them putting in steel braces under the SFP showed some very tiny water leaks running down the outside curve of the containment concrete. You can see little light colored streams of water. TEPCO isn't forthcoming about details of the instability just that it is. We estimated at one point 400 liters a day leaking in May
by lillymunster 6/13/2011 6:18:22 PM
well, here the steamies, there the quakies ...... sigh.
by Edano 6/13/2011 6:19:05 PM
@lillymunster Tnx for the info
by WolfDK 6/13/2011 6:19:14 PM
@WolfDK yes. I read something last night that said the ionizing radiation where you get the blue glow requires water. So you have to have radioactive something and water. The flashes seem to happen when it is that wet dewpoint or they have fog. The steam releases likely add to it if this is what is happening.
by lillymunster 6/13/2011 6:20:01 PM
translate.google.com white smoke erupted together in mass - Japan - Nuclear Leaks interesting to see how the people are seeing this
by elainekirk 6/13/2011 6:20:39 PM
My bet is and have always been that radioactive particles are hitting the CCD causing this
by WolfDK 6/13/2011 6:21:15 PM
4 and the tower are obscured.
by lillymunster 6/13/2011 6:22:03 PM
Gotta go, bbl
by WolfDK 6/13/2011 6:22:30 PM
@lillymunster But the Cherenkov radiation displays as a very faint continuous bluish green glow, not as flashes of any kind. There must be another explanation for those flashes. What about the UFO today, any insight on that? Moon, balloon, alien aircraft?
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 6:23:02 PM
up copy of webcam the time 12.00 to 1.00am it started with #3 watching this
by elainekirk 6/13/2011 6:24:15 PM
A useful link, youtube Fukushima videos this week : www.youtube.com
@Pedro Jesus we had one vote for moon, another for balloon and one for drone. :-)
by lillymunster 6/13/2011 6:32:33 PM
It's the guy who paints the grass and trees green -- he comes in by balloon at night.
by Markfm 6/13/2011 6:33:47 PM
@lillymunster Can I vote for alien aircraft? I'm kidding. I'm waiting for the video to download. Slow connection.
by Pedro Jesus 6/13/2011 6:33:49 PM
The Daiichi photos directly on Flicker. I have seen from this person before, seems to have added lots more. I don't think these are official photos. Other ones seen had the date stamp blurred out. www.flickr.com
Today, we, TEPCO, had received a direction* from NISA in relation to the submission of the report of installation of alternative cooling and purification system of spent fuel pool of Unit 3 of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
In accordance with this direction, we, TEPCO, will, regarding the installation of the alternative cooling and purification system of spent fuel pool of Unit 3 of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, evaluate its effectiveness of stable cooling and safety of spent fuel in the spent fuel pool and report to NISA immediately. www.tepco.co.jp looking at that video they may be revising their plans!!
by elainekirk 6/13/2011 6:39:08 PM
Oops, I thought that video was about the strange light. Well, that steam emission looks like some sort of pressurized steam release blowing straight up . Is that common?

Anti-nuclear activists rally in nation’s train stations Protesters said Taiwan, like Japan, is prone to earthquakes and Taipei is within 30km of two nuclear plants, and urged construction of the Longmen plant to stop
Three months after the nuclear crisis began at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Japan, environmental activists in Taiwan gathered at major train stations and in front of the legislature on the weekend to promote their vision of a nuclear-free Taiwan.
The series of rallies across the nation was organized by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Union (TEPU), a civic group that has dedicated itself to opposing nuclear energy for more than a decade.
In spite of the high temperatures and afternoon thundershowers, activists, wearing straw hats and raincoats, stood in front of Taipei Railway Station to pray in silent tribute to the victims of the powerful earthquake and tsunami that stuck Japan on March 11, sparking a nuclear crisis.
“We [Taiwan] sit on earthquake faults, too, and Taipei is located within a 30km-radius area from the No. 1 and No. 2 nuclear power plants,” said Gloria Hsu (徐光蓉), a professor of atmospheric sciences at National Taiwan University.
“We are one of the most densely populated areas located near nuclear power plants. Where can we run to if an accident occurs?” she asked. More: www.taipeitimes.com
by joniver 6/13/2011 6:41:13 PM
@Pedro Jesus Not to the extent it was. There is also a bit of a photo anomaly due to the tower behind 4. I think it increases the look of the steam column even though there clearly was a steam column going up. The tower behind made it look more dense.

Budget for 4th nuclear power plant approved amid protests The Legislative Yuan approved the budget for Taiwan's fourth nuclear power plant for this year Monday amid protests staged by anti-nuclear activists outside the legislature.
The ruling Kuomintang (KMT)-dominated legislature passed a budget of more than NT$14 billion (US$486 million) for the still-under-construction fourth nuclear power plant, operated by the state-run Taiwan Power Co. More: focustaiwan.tw

Smoke from 4 appears to be darker..as the light comes up.
by LM 6/13/2011 6:50:01 PM
That is not steam coming from 4....at least in my opinion.
by LM 6/13/2011 6:50:56 PM
@lm it looks like smoke and I am suprised that they seem to have stopped watering
by elainekirk 6/13/2011 7:02:50 PM
What is the status of the reactor in building 4? Was it unloaded and empty or
by Sam 6/13/2011 7:03:10 PM
@sam yes they report the reactor empty but the sfp was near capacity
by elainekirk 6/13/2011 7:04:39 PM
An alternative circulation system for the used fuel pool at unit 2 began operation on 31 May and brought temperatures down to 31°C by 10 June - much closer to normal temperatures of around 25ºC. This had been expected to reduce humidity within the building, but this has not been the case. Instead Tepco now thinks the primary source of humidity is the damaged torus suppression chamber in the basement of the building. More: www.world-nuclear-news.org
