  • lilly.. check down a ways on my post for the KURION start up company to help with treatment of waste. my take is .. maybe we should do alittle research on the technology so people will know how they plan to treat the waste, then store the containers. what's your thoughts

  • @dean So more look into their technologies rather than the business interests and financing? I wasn't sure on your post.
    by lillymunster 6/13/2011 3:04:40 PM

  • @lilly.. I think a start is the technology so people can begin to see treatment/handling of waste,,, liquid and eventually fuel. the processes etc... The other would probably not interest many but deals with how big corp's and in this case a startup company monopalize

  • @dean which article should I start with ?
    by elainekirk 6/13/2011 3:09:57 PM

  • @Dean, any idea what their "Ion Specific Media" might be? That seems to be the piece of the system that is secret. Some of the other components shown by tepco was an oil remover, desalination, filtration through zeolite and reverse osmosis. Those components are already commonly used. Is this secret media the big proprietary thing or possibly more is proprietary?
    by lillymunster 6/13/2011 3:12:30 PM

  • @Elaine: Kurion home page www.kurion.com
    by lillymunster 6/13/2011 3:12:58 PM

  • elaine, I would try some general searches on kurion and then try to dig in to the"ion specific media"... also from what's been put out from fukushima we should be able to piece together the system block diagram
    by dean 6/13/2011 3:13:26 PM

  • I will do some research later also and pass it on, I traveled for my work and will go over to the office for awhile then be back after my lunch
    by dean 6/13/2011 3:14:10 PM

  • lilly.. the ion specific media can be broken down, just take alittle time. I think kurion is a small player in the total picture so it will be interesting to see what this new (worked 24/7 to engineer) media will do.. they were also part of the TMI cleanup.
    by dean 6/13/2011 3:15:50 PM

  • @dean Their management team seems to come from lots of existing nuke waste companies. It seems like the head people came together around this technology?
    by lillymunster 6/13/2011 3:18:20 PM

  • by dean 6/13/2011 3:19:07 PM

  • I believe that's correct lilly, and the fund company has recently added some big names.. former CIA director.. not that has anything to do with it all but coincidental.
    by dean 6/13/2011 3:20:15 PM

  • again .. I hope things go forward with SAFETY FOR PERSONNEL first
    by dean 6/13/2011 3:20:49 PM

  • The Ion Specific Media is based on materials used at TMI so we might be able to reverse engineer this by looking at TMI details. www.epicos.com
    by lillymunster 6/13/2011 3:20:53 PM

  • @dean Former CIA director and a principal from Greenpeace... strange bedfellows indeed. :-)

  • This in the article I just posted about Kurion's media product: "Since it can be produced in large quantities the Kurion ISM can be used in water decontamination applications (nuclear plant or contaminated municipal water treatment facilities) and in trench, barrier or perimeter porous sock format. "

So could they stuff some of that into the screens and holes down at the water intakes that are leaking radioactive water??
    by lillymunster 6/13/2011 3:24:34 PM

  • some of our chemical experts perhaps could break down what isotopes they are specifically targeting and what kind of reduction factors they may achieve
    by dean 6/13/2011 3:25:11 PM

  • online.wsj.com According to the Al-Jazeera newscast I am listening to, 95% of voters decided to vote agaisnt the resurrection of nuclear /atomic energy in Italy.
    by wrshpr 6/13/2011 3:25:59 PM

  • if they could some how pool that leakage and then run through the treatment system or parts of it I think so
    by dean 6/13/2011 3:26:01 PM

  • This is their claimed absorptions. No details on percentages absorbed. I know Areva's solution had issues of not removing everything and they released tainted water in France.

Kurion developed its media to target and remove radioactive isotopes (atoms) from aqueous solutions that threaten both human health and the environment, including fission byproducts (e.g. plutonium, americium), indicators of failed fuel (e.g. cesium, strontium, and technetium), and effluent release drivers (e.g. nickel, iodine, cobalt, antimony).

  • Fukushima city may be included in evacuation zone
Reporting from Fukushima city, which is 80km away from the Fukushima-1 nuclear plant, RT’s Sean Thomas says radiation levels are very high in the city as the contaminated particles are carried there by wind and rain.
At some places the readings are 1,000 times over the dose safe for health. Moreover, readings may differ dramatically at objects standing just a meter away from each other: a house giving 30 times over the dose, while a building next to it surging to 500 times over the safety limit.
Grass is one of the concerns of the local residents as it attracts and absorbs radiation.

  • Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant - 1,670 Children Still Living In The Area . Still living within 20 miles of the Fukushima nuclear power plant are hundreds of children, against the advice of the Japanese government, a newspaper says. Local officials confirmed there are 1,670 children in the emergency preparation zone 12 to 20 miles from the crippled plant, The Yomiuri Shimbun reported Thursday. The government recommends young children, pregnant women and people who require nursing care because of age, illness or disability not remain in the zone but has not mandated their evacuation. www.thirdage.com
