  • @Pedro Jesus Tepco has earned our skepticism even in the wake of an unprecedented earthquake.

That great big water filtering plant looks in reality like a series of filters which no doubt are needed but how the heck are they going to run smoothly with water that must have so many contaminents in from oil to debris to radioactive substances

  • Hey CB you still here?

  • @All Good evening from Bulgaria! I've been following this blog even from the Reuters blog, but I am so non-techy, so I've hardly posted here. I just want to thank you all for your patience and willingness to keep this blog! One big THANKS for all! Now I have to leave, because I have to study for my exam tomorrow! Take care all and be safe!
P.S. Here in Bulgaria were detected tons of radioactive mushrooms. I think that is bid deal, but the f***n media here is very VERY very stupid and they didn't care about that at all! They just said that they were contaminaided from the Chernobyl disaster, but they also said that those mushrooms were gronw up in 2010. I just don't getit ?!?
    by DT 6/19/2011 6:25:33 PM

  • @LM They have, undoubtedly, but I should point out that we have two of the most competent and experienced nuclear companies in the world working along side TEPCO trying to straighten up the mess. Not everything is to blame on TEPCO. The plant's design is General Electric (US based nuclear company) and the construction was General Electric, Toshiba and Hitachi. There are others to blame here, if any. We should use this platform more to update news and try to keep ourselves from pointing fingers when something doesn't go according to plan or to what we wished for. Forgive me for my occasional rants.

  • @Pedro Jesus : do you want to destroy discussions ?
by Edano edited by Edano 6/19/2011 6:38:53 PM

  • @Veenie Old NPP with decades of insufficient maintenance, no eq upgrades and a 9.0 quake. Everything got wrecked. The land under the plant sunk a foot due to all the movement. That would have wrecked pretty much anything.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 6:40:24 PM

  • @Edano Not at all. But I can see they need refocus from time to time. Last night when I arrived I tried to scan for news and all I found was complaints about how badly TEPCO has been dealing with the situation. I can imagine if someone new pops into this thread looking for more information they won't be impressed if all they see is complaints against this or that and no unbiased information.
by Pedro Jesus 6/19/2011 6:45:06 PM

  • @nancy glad you brought the sinking up because a tweet earlier was saying that there is no stopping 4 leaning it was a translation so I will keep it at that but it did sound like that land has not yet settled
    by ElaineKirk 6/19/2011 6:46:50 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus : this blog is not supposed to forward news from tepco or nisa. we are independent. therefore every thought is appreciated. we all know that tepco and nisa are covering up and deceiving the public. this has to be discussed.
by Edano edited by Edano 6/19/2011 6:47:19 PM

  • @ElaineKirk It can't settle, we just had another 4.7 very close this time
    by Veenie 6/19/2011 6:47:42 PM

  • @Edano Sure, I was not going in that direction. But I don't think it's wise to go the other direction either. We need to keep our distance from the extreme sides and try to remain as unbiased and detached as possible. Balance is the key.

Decontamination equipment failure to be analyzed

Tokyo Electric Power Company started an experiment on Sunday night to determine the cause of a sudden rise in radiation levels that caused a water decontamination system to shut down.

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant suspects that greater than anticipated amounts of contaminated oil and sludge entered part of the system.

The utility put the new system into full operation on Friday night to remove radioactive materials from the highly contaminated water that has accumulated in the plant.

The operation had to be suspended after just 5 hours as the radiation level of equipment that removes oil and sludge rose to 4 millisieverts per hour, the level at which it needs to be replaced.

TEPCO had initially expected the equipment to last for about a month before it had to be changed.

The utility says greater than anticipated amounts of material containing radioactive substances may have flowed into the device, causing the radiation level to rise rapidly.

The company started an experiment on Sunday night to compare an oil absorbent with the material currently being used, to determine the cause of the sudden rise in radiation levels.

The resumption of a full-fledged operation will depend on the outcome of the experiment.

The amount of contaminated water is growing by 500 tons a day as fresh water is continuously being injected into the reactors to cool them down.

TEPCO is working to identify the cause of the series of problems and to take measures to resolve them, as the storage facilities for the contaminated water are filling up.

A delay in resuming the system could cause the water to overflow in about a week.

  • @Edano - there's some interesting further info in my post on page 1687, suggesting that after testing problems the filtration system was rushed into service only to fail 5 hours later. This suggests that there may be quite serious issues, for instance much higher than exspected radioactivity, bearing in mind that they are supposed to be filtering the least radioactive water. If it doesn't work then the much-trumpeted water filtration idea could fail. The rush also suggets that they are very pressed for time before the overflowing starts.

  • @ all.. I have an interesting link with an interesting comment.. let me post it and see what you all think
    by dean 6/19/2011 7:18:24 PM

  • @LM There is also an important distinction when people complain about TEPCO. The complaining is usually at the corporate entity. Much of the dishonestly, stalling and frustrating events are caused by the corporate office and higher management. The engineers and workers at the plant are busting their butts and risking their lives to try to fix this. We have seen many examples where the workers and even plant managers want to do the right thing but get stopped by higher ups in the corporation. I would hate that someone thought we were bashing the workers when the frustration is usually flung at the corporate management.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 7:19:15 PM

  • @lillymunster It's all about buying time at this point. We haven't even begun to hear anything but fairy tales about a final resolution. Well, "final".

    by smoss 6/19/2011 7:22:10 PM

  • @lillymunster Yes, valiant workers, corrupt corporate management trying mostly to cover their butts. It's like a great Socialist novel. They'd better watch out if things go really bad and that story gets any traction.
    by radioguy 6/19/2011 7:22:14 PM

  • @radioguy At the corporate level I see more of an effort to avoid liability than to solve the problem.
    by lillymunster 6/19/2011 7:23:16 PM

  • @Lilly My frustration is most definitely NOT directed at the workers...it's big business and the puppet masters that are calling the shots.
    by LM 6/19/2011 7:23:22 PM

  • @Lilly I've been a little frustrated with some pro-nuclaer factions implying that anyone outside the industry is too stupid to be armed with the facts. It's definitely great PR for them. I personally find truths on both sides and don't like it when it's assumed that an anti-nuke stance is one of ignorance. I find that BS!

We need no further assumptions because, we know that the building had just before been exposed to an extraordinarily strong earthquake."
