  • Given how many monitors were down or barely functioning when they started looking at them, I'm not sure it can't be attributed to the same creeping decrepitude as the Fuku piping.

  • @RadioGuy , the EPA (example Harrisonburg here: www.epa.gov ) provides the following disclaimer:
    Notes on the Data

Brief gaps in RadNet data represent instrument error.
Larger gaps (>1 day) occasionally appear when RadNet monitors are taken offline for servicing.
A notice is posted when monitors are off-line for servicing. A blank graph indicates that one part of a meter on the monitor is not working.
Electrical interference can cause spikes, shown on graphs as one point significantly higher than the rest of the data.
As you view data, be aware that there are often large differences in normal background radiation among the monitoring locations because background radiation levels depend on altitude and the amount of naturally occurring radioactive elements in the local soil. What is natural in one location is different from what is natural in another.

  • @Peter Melzer It's working too hard to see a conspiracy. I'm more concerned by the changes at the top that short-funded such a crucial industry so that along with diminishing regulation, the safety and monitoring agencies were defunded.
    by RadioGuy 7/2/2011 9:18:20 PM

  • industry = agency
    by RadioGuy 7/2/2011 9:18:42 PM

  • it was appalling how many monitors were offline in those first crucial weeks.
    by RadioGuy 7/2/2011 9:19:20 PM

  • @RadioGuy As far as I know nothing was done to give the EPA some emergency funds to pay for the increased monitoring.
    by lillymunster 7/2/2011 9:20:03 PM

  • @RadioGuy , I agree. Suffice it to say that their graphs won't load today. Out grilling burgers I suppose. Oh well, we have the most important US holiday on hand!

  • Jake Adelstein, author of the Atlantic article commented on Twitter he hopes it shakes up the GoJ and pressures them into quake proofing other reactors.
    by lillymunster 7/2/2011 9:25:08 PM

  • I sincerely hope that our small contribution will raise the awareness for the importance of such monitoring systems. They are supposed to be here for us and not only to fulfill defense-related needs.

  • A couple more tweets from the author: "Takes courage to Tell the Truth When it Can You cost your job. TEPCO guys who I spoke with Deeply Respect the U.S." "Rarely met People I Have Terrified of Their Employers as TEPCO as workers, except for some low-ranking Yakuza."
    by lillymunster 7/2/2011 9:28:35 PM

  • proper translation of the second quote I have rarely met people as terrified of their employers as TEPCO workers, except for some low-ranking yakuza.

  • @Peter Melzer this is one thing that the frequently inaccurate side of the blog world has actually helped with. They cause such a disturbance with something that may not be correct that the disturbance requires the agency in question to come forth with some information.

  • @Edano hmm. How often should it? I know TEPCO was late with the plant parameters Friday

  • TEPCO: Nuclear fuel pool cooled to stable level

The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has reported progress in its work to stabilize the facility's spent fuel rods.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says the cooling system that began operating at the No.3 reactor on Thursday has brought the temperature of the nuclear fuel storage pool of the reactor to just below 40 degrees Celsius from the previous level of 62 degrees.

TEPCO says the temperature of the pool was 39.9 degrees as of 5 AM on Saturday.

As cooling has progressed faster than initially expected, TEPCO says the temperature will likely stabilize at around 30 degrees in a few days. The temperature of the spent fuel pool of the No.2 reactor has already declined to that level.
As for the No.1 and No.4 reactors, the utility plans to begin operating cooling systems by the end of this month. Until then, the company needs to inject cooling water on a regular basis.

TEPCO is concerned about possible difficulty in installing the cooling system at the No.4 reactor. A hydrogen explosion in March damaged piping necessary for the system and debris left there is hampering construction work.

The company says there may be a delay in its installation plan.

@lillymunster High concentrations of cesium-137 (68 becquerels per gram) of socks attached to the nuclear power plant workers, 75 percent in a single washing, 85 percent were three times removed. After washing and rinsing water from the washing tub of radiation were identified. translate.google.com

by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 10:07:57 PM

  • They keep talking about having lots of low level radioactive water a #6 they also have a facility near #6 could it be the laundry ?
by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 10:15:45 PM

  • Oh just seen that must be one of the tepco washers it is leaking
by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 10:20:30 PM

  • seems TEPCO changed sfp #4 to (steamy) washing room at moment
    by Puc 7/2/2011 10:28:05 PM

  • @Puc that'll be the drier all those socks will create a lot of steam when hung above the #4 cauldron
by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 10:31:10 PM

  • @Elaine Kirk LOL. We found the laundry. Actually I think they are using Daini's laundry and work prep areas.

  • @lillymunster oh a contribution from H.E. forums to the body cooling www.stormchaser.ca
Each suit consists of several layers of protection. First is an insulated vest which protects you from frostbite which you could get from having ice in direct contact with the skin. Then the ice vest which is a series of gel filled pouches, sewn into a mesh vest and kept frozen. This cools you body's core temperature. Overtop of all that is a set of rugged overalls. These keep the radiant heat from the cave away from the ice plus they protect you from the sharp crystals. Last but not least is the respirator pack. This custom built backpack is made of insulating foam and contains frozen metal ice bottles. A fan blows air over the bottles and it is pumped up a hose to a face mask which is similar to the type worn by fighter pilots. This system allows you to breathe chilled air as long as the ice remains frozen in the pack.
by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 10:43:47 PM

  • @Puc Yup don't go putting your foot in it Puc
by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 10:45:17 PM

  • @Edano is there not a risk of shock in taping ice pack to the top of spine with no insulation
by Elaine Kirk 7/2/2011 10:50:18 PM

  • Looking at this the tepco employees get cool vests and contracted workers get the ice pack taped on the back of a vest www.tepco.co.jp
by Elaine Kirk 7/3/2011 12:03:08 AM

  • @Elaine Kirk how did you sort that out. The document seems vague about what fits each description and who gets what.
    by lillymunster 7/3/2011 12:26:15 AM

  • numbers and the fact they say cooperative firms we know there are about 300 tepco men there ? and 3000 altogether ? I am just using the figures they threw around when the workers started getting radiation checks.
I could be completely wrong I should have said it was just opinion
by Elaine Kirk 7/3/2011 12:30:29 AM

  • @Elaine Kirk they seem to sort out the contractors and then get vague about what they get. Past actions would suggest the contractors get treated like crap. Possibly ice cubes duct taped on their bodies? :-)
