  • Early on, when this all started, I remember seeing a shot that showed massive road damage, behind the reactors, 2-3 foot lift. Think it was one of my first posts on this board, a long, long time ago

  • @ Lilly I sent you details by mail of two tweeters before I. Came out you need to read probably right up to 24 hrrrs ago to get a picture plus the fewer workers in that significant? I am sitting at festival looking out over islands eating ice cream and still cant resist popping in to see you all

  • @elainekirk LOL. Thanks. I saw the email. Will get them added as I get to tweets today. Currently trying to assemble an article for the group site that combines the two Atlantic articles and the AP article on the quake damage and bad maintenance at FUKU.

  • Have a good one Dean.

@All, I finished an article that combines the information in the Atlantic articles and the WSJ article. It combines the witness accounts of the quake damage and plant events along with some of the info in the WSJ article about the flawed design. www.simplyinfo.org

  • I had hoped to be able to pull some screen shots of the #4 explosion video Ian posted this morning. The quality of the video is so low plus the original recording was bad like someone made a video of their tv. If anyone determines what TV station the broadcast came from we might be able to contact them and ask for footage.

    by lillymunster 7/3/2011 6:17:45 PM

  • the diagram below says 30cm diameter 7cm wide those figures dont visually seem to fit this leak?

    by elainekirk 7/3/2011 6:22:33 PM

  • @lillymunster, right, trying to get the original footage is a good idea. I used upteen search terms and couldn't find another posting of it out there. One thing I've learned since working with video is if running footage looks bad, the single frames will be even worse. Running footage actually causes a degree of sharpness above and beyond that found in the single frames. I fascinating holistic property that must somehow relate to how our brains process real-time flowing information.

    by elainekirk 7/3/2011 7:04:20 PM

  • @Veenie @elainekirk It was inevitable. It was the flaw in the "hide, obfuscate, misinform, deny" strategy they clocked themselves into from the very beginning. That only works if a story goes away.
    by RadioGuy 7/3/2011 7:06:44 PM

  • "The [Unit 4] fuel pool is really two pools separated by a gate. Fuel removed from the reactor goes first into the small, upper pool which is only 20 or 25 feet deep. Later they move the fuel to the big, deep pool. There was apparently only a little fuel in this upper pool at the time of the quake.

This UPPER pool broke. The three-eighths inch steel liner is cracked and will not hold water. The concrete wall in front of this upper pool fell off. Fuel was severely damaged probably by explosion. Temperature profiles measured by helicopters show clumps of hot stuff that must be fuel scattered around the floor area. This scenario is consistent with the numerous reports of fire in unit 4." atomicinsights.com
    by Ian 7/3/2011 7:31:59 PM

  • @Ian ty so they had transferred to majority of the reactor fuel from little to big at the time of the quake?

  • Hose leaking water at Fukushima No.5 reactor

The operator of the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says a hose has been leaking seawater used to cool the No.5 reactor, which is currently in a state of cold shutdown.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, is set to replace the hose, but will have to suspend the reactor's cooling function to do so. It says this will raise the water temperature, but the reactor will still remain in a state of cold shutdown.

TEPCO says workers patrolling around the No.5 reactor found a hose leaking water on Sunday morning around the outlet of a temporary pump sending seawater into the reactor's cooling system. The company says the polyvinyl chloride hose has a crack about 30 centimeters long and 7 centimeters wide.
    TEPCO stopped sending
water at around 10 AM to replace the hose. The reactor's cooling system stopped 15 minutes later, meaning its cooling function was temporarily lost.

The water temperature inside the reactor was 43.1 degrees Celsius at 8 AM. TEPCO expects the temperature to rise 2.5 degrees per hour while the cooling function is halted.

The company says that if the replacement work finishes during the night and the cooling system is restarted, the water temperature will not exceed 100 degrees, the level needed to keep the reactor in a state of cold shutdown.

The No.5 reactor was hit by a pump failure on May 29th, when a delay in recovery briefly sent the water temperature to 94.8 degrees.

  • That whole article "reaks" of stink
    by Veenie 7/3/2011 7:59:50 PM

  • This is a deep article that offers some insights into the dysfunctional political situation that was current in Japan when this mess started, and how it has "progressed" during the crisis, by a writer who is obviously no fan of Kan. ampontan.wordpress.com

“The reason people voted for Kan (in last year’s DPJ presidential election) was because they didn’t want to vote for Ozawa, but we wound up really getting screwed.”
    - DPJ Senior Advisor Watanabe Kozo in a meeting with New Komeito

IT’S TIME to draw conclusions from the fact that national governments throughout the world are now part of the problem rather than the solution. Those with the eyes to see will realize that the governments run by people who assume they’re the first rather than the last resort are functioning in the way classical liberals have always known they would. That is to say, they are dysfunctional.

  • @RadioGuy Does it really matter?
    by Veenie 7/3/2011 8:05:11 PM

  • I am not resding anything at all stating that YES it is safe
    by Veenie 7/3/2011 8:05:57 PM

  • @Veenie and here is the disclaimer
", U.S. government experts have concluded that the Government of Japan has the resources and technical capabilities to identify and quarantine contaminated food and water before they reach consumers"
    by elainekirk 7/3/2011 8:08:20 PM

  • @Elaine, yes, I guess most was transferred, it says "There was apparently only a little fuel in this upper pool at the time of the quake." Has anyone seen corroborating data on SFP4 having two sections? This is obviously something that has evaded media. I think it may also be the case wrt SFP3, for example in my video clip below I think we can see racks close to the surface of SFP3.
