Japan Earthquake | Page 1830

  • @elainekirk There was a 110f heat index. People are not used to that around here even in the summer. I have to wonder what a typical summer in the Fukushima region of Japan is like. If it is less warm in that region or if the people working at the plant are not used to hot summer heat it just makes it worse.

  • @Jo They are doing the hard and dangerous work, get little cooperation from TEPCO's corporate office and frequently the blame when convenient. I am really glad that many of them are talking. It helps everyone understand what is really happening.

  • Would like to hear opinions on the accuracy of the information in this article. It is the first citizen produced self protection document I have seen. If it pans out to be valid maybe we should include something about it on the group site? japanfocus.org
    by lillymunster 7/4/2011 9:48:25 PM

  • @lillymunster still reading it this is really good stuff it looks valid I am no expert but so far they are not making claims just stating facts for people to make their own minds up - back to the reading
    by elainekirk 7/4/2011 10:09:29 PM

  • @lillymunster it is brilliant I hope you do do a piece oon it so we can spread it it will be enourmously useful to families in Japan and I think globally think parents reading about what those parents need to do just day to day ...it is going to help raise awareness of their plight

  • @ ELAINE.. and LILLY.. the document is pretty good, it does have some technical terms and I'm not sure if it is written in a manner to talk to a layman (bo would probably know that). I my mind I would think the link from statistical data and technical terminology needs to be broken down to simple understandable terms that we get feed back on from some one in Japan and they say.. WE HAVE IT NOW...

  • Hi all! Happy 4th to those from US and happy day to everyone else....Just peeked at cam....I can't believe that we can still see so much steam from 4 on a hot summer day. It must be incredibly hot.
    by LM 7/4/2011 11:02:48 PM

  • hi Ian nice seeing you .. the other day when we were talking about the 3 SFP and the ledge etc.. that wrinkled part obviously now is not the wall but I worry about what I saw a the very beginning of the video on the outer wall... have you clarified that any?

    by elainekirk 7/4/2011 11:15:01 PM

  • @dean I'm glad! Looking forward to some BBQ and maybe fireworks..if the marine layer cooperates. @all Has anyone heard any updates on Los Alamos or Cooper and Calhoun? I didn't hear anything about any of them on the morning news earlier.
    by LM 7/4/2011 11:15:36 PM

  • I havent heard anything or seen anything @LM
have you seen anything watering #4 ? there is no record I can find for today only the equipment and the reactor well listed as watered
    by elainekirk 7/4/2011 11:17:19 PM

  • also.. the mega crane may be taking airbourne radiation level readings to see what it will be like up there putting the cover over
    by dean 7/4/2011 11:18:35 PM

  • I am wondering if #4 sfp is now so close to collapse that they darent risk the weight of more water?
    by elainekirk 7/4/2011 11:18:45 PM

  • elaine didnt the beef up the support for the SFP there, i keep thinking, lower water level, water heating to near boiling and lots of vapor coming off,, then trying to keep some delicate balance
    by dean 7/4/2011 11:20:20 PM

  • Hay dean, the concrete-like edge we see at the beginning of the SFP3 video isn't the upper edge of the pool, so we're not near a wall. That edge is something over the pool, and the giveaway of this fact is that there is pool and debris under the concrete-like edge. So this edge is something extended over the pool, not at the top of a wall of the pool. Arnie understood this, and thankfully didn't make the mistaken assumption in his latest video that it was the top of the pool. So it's my impression that the water level is about 20 feet below normal in the May 8th SFP3 video. www.youtube.com
    by Ian 7/4/2011 11:20:35 PM

  • @Elaine Thanks. I haven't seen anything watering 4. You might be right about weight concerns...especially if their supports aren't effective in compensating the

    by dean 7/4/2011 11:28:37 PM

  • @dean they beefed it up dean but word is that the unit is so unsound they are expecting it to fall
    by elainekirk 7/4/2011 11:28:58 PM

  • @dean I always ask on here for video;s I have no talent for video hunting google doesnt do it too well
    by elainekirk 7/4/2011 11:29:57 PM

  • @Elaine Where did you hear that they were expecting it to fall?
    by LM 7/4/2011 11:31:50 PM

  • It's my feeling that SFP #3 steel wall suffered damage but I will investigate before making my final thoughts @Ian
    by dean 7/4/2011 11:37:38 PM

  • s3.amazonaws.com
why didnt they protect this steel from the atmosphere ? it is going to really add to the hydrogen problem surely? the rust looks to be forming already

    by elainekirk via S3.amazonaws 7/4/2011 11:37:42 PM

  • @LM @Ian @dean an explosion in such a contained space with a mass of water in it that pool must have vibrated like hell wouldnt it?
    by elainekirk 7/4/2011 11:40:39 PM

  • @Ian.. nothing against your observations I am just one of those old school nuke men who has to dig a little deeper.
    by dean 7/4/2011 11:45:37 PM

  • yes elaine, particularly in #3 where there appeared to be such a huge explosion and perhaps followed by secondary ones..
    by dean 7/4/2011 11:46:56 PM

  • dinner time.. be back
    by dean 7/4/2011 11:47:11 PM

  • @Elaine I agree. There should have been significant vibration. I can't imagine there wasn't serious pipe damage in all the units, but especially 3 and 4.
    by LM 7/4/2011 11:50:41 PM

  • wow, i think i have never seen such a huge crane in my life (teppycam).
    by Edano 7/4/2011 11:58:48 PM

  • @elainekirk, I don't know what the likely energy-releasing event in the pool was like. I'm still scratching my head. But enough evidence weighs me to believe such an event did happen (especially the heavy fuel elements, transuranics, thrown around the campus, that they came from corium deep under the building seems unlikely, except by way of water washout but that can't explain the surface transuranics and uphill of U3). It might have been more like a flamethrower event (producing the flash of fire over SFP3) than an explosion. We don't have a clear enough picture to know for sure what effects to expect the event to have proceeded, IMO.
    by Ian 7/4/2011 11:59:01 PM

  • @Ian true yup we can only guess ..@smoss godd evening @edano are they gonna move the structiure do you think?
