  • Bluefin is toast anyway without good solid radiation testing. Radiation has been in the water around Japan for months now as the adolescent bluefin buff up around Japan for their excursionary travels. I'm pretty sure they've already had enough time to contaminate the US/Canadian bluefin fisheries with the occasional radfish.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:53:11 PM

  • Though someone will have to land and test that first contaminated tuna before we know for sure.

  • NAyway, I don't trust Mitsubishi having a "known safe supply" of Golden Fish that they can mix and mingle with less tolerable catch.

EDF has announced a new two-year delay in the commissioning of the third generation nuclear reactor EPR. The Nuclear Safety Authority has repeatedly denounced the working conditions on site, the cost, now estimated at 6 billion euro (8.5 billion dollars), has doubled compared to initial projections.

Keep in mind, this deplorable state of affairs for the world's bluefin tuna fisheries was made before the Fukushima nuclear disaster polluted Japan's bluefin waters with virtually every radioactive fission product known to man. Ironically, while Mitsubishi captured the "clean bluefin" market and guaranteed themselves

  • big profits, to maximize it, they have to take down the rest of the tuna market by demanding tesating, which may even save the bluefin in the long run. Who will buy radioactive tuna if they know it is?
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 4:19:28 PM

  • Of course, then the radiation will wipe out the rest over time unless TEPCO's "plan" suddenly includes reclaiming their waste from the oceans. Man... what a mess.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 4:21:02 PM

  • @RadioGuy It will work like this : You by Brazilian or Chilean Tuna but you will receive Fukushima Tuna..... If you are a very rich Japanese or Chinese , you pay premium and get the Nice frozen Mitsubishi tuna ;-)

  • @RadioGuy Maybe not. In reality, there hasn't been so much radiation leaking to the ocean so far. Although there is still a lot of analysis undergoing, the samples that WHOI took some weeks ago all showed very little radioactive particulates. What we don't know is how much is leaking underground from the plant but that won't go far into the ocean, according to some scientific analysis that I've read recently.

  • Pingtung tuna to be scanned for radiation: The commissioner for Pingtung County has tried to allay fears of radiation-tainted tuna by promising to put this year’s catch through radiation scans before it goes on the market.
Known for its ocean fishing industry, Pingtung County will begin its annual bluefin tuna season next month, but county residents have worried that radiation leaks from Japan have spread to Taiwan’s fishing grounds. www.taipeitimes.com

  • @RadioGuy , so cynical, the survival of a species may depend on its radioactivity! Wasn't there this accolade proclaiming that a little radiation is good for you. The fish may have taken this pronouncement to heart.
by Peter Melzer 7/20/2011 4:28:36 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus On the grand scale, you're tight, but remember, we're talking about radiation, to many people the ultimate terrorist. No wonder they are trying so hard to keep the lid on the story. I'm betting that most people, if they hear that tuna (or anything else) is radioactive, will avoid it.... if they believe the source of the radiation testing.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 4:29:22 PM

  • Although the bluefin tuna catch this year has been bigger than last year, concerns over radiation contamination from the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan has lead to a slump in tuna prices.
However, the county government reassured the public that all the tuna caught was checked for radiation before it was put on the market. www.wantchinatimes.com

  • Brittleness factor of aging reactors key restart criterion
Decades of intense irradiation, heat skews cooling equation

In the world of nuclear reactor science and safety, the ductile-brittle transition temperature, which is used to measure the strength of the inner wall of a reactor pressure vessel, is a critical factor.

The steel walls of a reactor vessel wear out through years of direct exposure to neutron irradiation, and when they are weakened they can become brittle with sudden temperature drops.

A high DBTT means the walls can shatter at a relatively high temperature when the vessel is going through the cooling process, similar to pouring ice-cold water into a hot glass, causing it to shatter.

And when it comes to the brittleness factor, the one causing the most concern is reactor 1 at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Genkai nuclear plant in Saga Prefecture.
It has a DBTT of 98 degrees, the experts say.
