  • @All What would really blow the lid on this is if the children of politicians, actors, trust-fund babies, etc., could be shown to have 'relocated' to safer areas. Maybe the Japanese tabloids say where the rich kids party, school absenses tracked, new residential addresses...Nothing, but nothing, offends people more than to think their children are expendable, but some VIP's kids are not.

  • U.S. conducted subcritical nuclear tests in Dec. and Feb.

    WASHINGTON, July 19, Kyodo

The United States conducted subcritical nuclear tests at a Nevada underground test site on Dec. 1 last year and Feb. 2 this year, an arm of the Energy Department said Tuesday.

With the revelation by the National Nuclear Security Administration, the administration of President Barack Obama, who has called for creating a nuclear-free world, is likely to face criticism from antinuclear groups, including those in Japan.

The United States conducted a subcritical nuclear test in September, which marked the first such experiment since Obama took office in January 2009.

  • Fukushima-type disaster inevitable in U.S.?
(CBS News) The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was to meet Tuesday to discuss sweeping new safety recommendations, after having just finished inspecting all 104 U.S. nuclear plants in the wake of Japan's Fukushima disaster.

On "The Early Show," CBS News Chief Investigative Correspondent Armen Keteyian spotlighted one of those facilities' post-Fukushima inspection reports.

    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 2:48:31 AM

  • it wasn't all that good to begin with... are they sure they want it back?

  • @M.I.A. That's what I mean. But what baffles me is what makes Westinghouse (though they changed their name to CBS Corporation in 1997) break the ranks of ranks silence with GE and all? Is it "Rat's deserting?" Or is there no break? It's the first blow of a unified strategy to blame it all on the gubbmint regulators.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 2:58:09 AM

  • We'll see I guess, but hey, at least a major is taking the BRC to task for their awful "regulation".
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 2:59:14 AM

  • NRC... guess I need light. ;)
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 2:59:29 AM

  • @RadioGuy I thought I heard Westinghouse was getting out of nukes? If so...
    by M.I.A. 7/20/2011 2:59:54 AM

  • Yes, they're solely a Brit fuel company now I think. Westinghouse the monolith broke themselves up and changed their name to CBS in the process.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:01:22 AM

  • @RadioGuy Westinghouse is now owned by Toshiba IIRC - CBS out of the loop
    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:01:35 AM

  • Exactly... they completely divested when they renamed
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:02:06 AM

  • @RadioGuy BRC= Bastardized Regulatory Commission? And they 'regurgitate' instead of regulate? heh heh heh
    by M.I.A. 7/20/2011 3:02:06 AM

  • @M.I.A. Westinghouse still trying to push through a new nuclear design. It already has flaws found in it but they want to ram rod it through.
    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:02:19 AM

  • @lillymunster So CBS is now free to act like a news bureau? Wow, imagine..all the news they deem fit to print!
    by M.I.A. 7/20/2011 3:05:07 AM

  • @M.I.A. a strange phenomenon.
    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:06:04 AM

  • News bureau? No I'm sure that was an accident. ;) They're an advertising sales company.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:07:12 AM

  • For months the government balked at placing a wider ban on produce from the Fukushima region despite sporadic discoveries of contaminated produce, for fear of bringing fresh confusion in the disaster-stricken area, putting thousands more people out of work andadding to growing compensation claims for Tokyo Electric Power, which operates the Fukushima plant. From the NYT article below.

    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:14:43 AM

  • I wonder if someone at CBS finally just said "Wait a minute. They're just advertisers. We don't need to go down with them. We're not an energy company any more."
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:18:06 AM

  • @RadioGuy Or they see what is happening to Newscorp and suddenly need to be useful to the public. :-)
    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:19:00 AM

  • But I still expect to see it be some NRC scapegoat switcheroo act.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:19:12 AM

  • @RadioGuy That is act 3. Probably after something massive fails.
    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:19:45 AM

  • I read through the NRC info on their "new safety". All I found was spent fuel cooling systems, more generator power time and 8 hours of battery instead of 4. I am hoping there is more but worry there isn't.
If this is all we get out of the NRC post Fukushima nothing has changed.

    by M.I.A. 7/20/2011 3:24:21 AM

  • @M.I.A. I am really hoping they decide Japan is relevant at some point. For all the chaos they can bring attention to something and fast. If anyone can pull a skeleton out of a closet on a big company it is Anonymous or Wikileaks.
    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:25:03 AM

  • So far not a single word on Ft. Calhoun, shutting it down or building some sort of permanent flood walls.
    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:25:45 AM

  • @M.I.A. I love it, actually. Did you see how after that first broke, the initial rush ("we have a pretty good idea who's responsible") was to assume it had to be China?

They fixed those guys, though. I see they made a 'major' bust over the PayPal DDoS attack. Probably 14 wannabes who just saw the tweet and figured it would be a lark.
