  • @Peter Melzer : regarding the cooling problems: if water is a moderator, can't they find a different liquid better suitable to cool the fuel ?
    by Edano 7/20/2011 3:05:55 PM

  • @lillymunster , I read the post. Here are my suggestions: 1) "...Certain clays that are be edible as supplements..." needs fixing, I believe. 2) "We have listed all of the ones we currently know of in our Japan Aid Resources list of link on our website..." should read: "We have listed all we currently know of in our Japan Aid Resources list of link on our website..." :)

  • a liquid with a higher vaporizing point and higher heat capacity ?
    by Edano 7/20/2011 3:07:43 PM

  • @Edano True.
by Pedro Jesus 7/20/2011 3:07:53 PM

  • @Peter Melzer made the second change. Not sure what to do with the #1 on the clay thing. People gave me a number of pieces of information about certain clays being beneficial in drawing out certain types of radiation. Some of the links were undocumented, some were of a more medical nature. I purposely made the statement vague. Not wanting to dive too deep into the clay information because I don't personally have deep knowledge on the subject and did not find what I thought was a reliable source for the theories or exactly what ones or methods are reliable..
    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:12:36 PM

  • @Edano , I thought of antifreeze at one stage. But according to that excerpt I posted below, active corium may not be in touch with the water at all. I don't see much opportunity for moderation there. But, the water may help moderate and prevent further zirconium burn in the fuel remaining in the RPVs. I assume that is the source of the fear of further hydrogen production and hence the need of filling the primary containments with nitrogen.
by Peter Melzer 7/20/2011 3:17:07 PM

  • @Peter Melzer : if the surrounding of the corium is colder, the ceramic crust will grow. there would be an effect, even it will never cool the entire corium, it will take away more energy.
    by Edano 7/20/2011 3:19:19 PM

  • @lillymunster , it is just the phrasing, "... are be edible..." , perhaps" that are edible..."? :)
by Peter Melzer 7/20/2011 3:19:38 PM

  • @Peter Melzer : as to the moderator, i thought of using an "emergeny coolant" in havarizing plants. that you exchange the water with another liquid that does not moderate the neutrons anymore. in case of an emergency.
    by Edano 7/20/2011 3:22:00 PM

    by lillymunster 7/20/2011 3:26:08 PM

  • @lillymunster Re Coping... Thanks for this. By their very nature any filters used will collect and concentrate radioactive particles so I think you should mention that these filters, vac bags, etc need to disposed of extra-safely - as radioactive waste? Also, if you're suggesting baking soda as a preventative measure, perhaps include some indication of, or reference to, how much should be consumed.
    by es 7/20/2011 3:27:32 PM

  • @es good points, the baking soda was in a NIH report, will go find. Good point on the filters! I thought of it related to water distillers and completely missed things like you just mentioned - DOH!

  • @es , the whole country must adopt new rules of how to dispose household waste. Any filter, air or water, should be checked for contamination before disposal. They must introduce separate trash cans for the radioactive household waste. Furthermore, what is needed is detectors for use in every household. Perhaps that sounds too grim a future for politicians to face, but for the sake of public health the local governments will have to implement such procedures.
by Peter Melzer 7/20/2011 3:40:39 PM

  • I'm stunned that they can they actually expect people to fall for this crap... and that they DO! So by now they'll just say anything and know that it will be reported as if it were true for days while they try to figure out the next step in their tap dance.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:41:11 PM

  • @Peter Melzer 100% correct, but i bet they won't do any of that.

    by Majj 7/20/2011 3:42:49 PM

  • @Peter Melzer But none of that will happen till they admit there's a problem. They'll just change the metrics again before that.
    by RadioGuy 7/20/2011 3:43:44 PM

  • @Edano , I fear that too, because a trash can with a "radioactive" sticker in front of your home does not enhance the value of the real estate.

  • Mitsubishi Hoards Frozen Bluefin Tuna As Fishing Stock Declines: Japanese mega-conglomerate Mitsubishi has allegedly started to hoard thousands of tons of bluefin tuna just as stocks of the fish plummet worldwide. If the fish goes commercially extinct, the company is hopeful that it can turn a hefty profit from its frozen bluefin cache. Bluefin is one of the world's most endangered fish, and is expected to go commercially extinct by 2012 if drastic measures aren't taken to stem overfishing. Although commercial hauls are legally limited to 22,000 tons per year, conservationists estimate that the actual catch is 60,000 tons, more than four times the maximum sustainable level. By its own estimates, Mitsubishi controls 35 to 40 percent of that stock. Although Mitsubishi admits that it deep-freezes some of its catch to smooth out short-term supply, some environmentalists believe the company is attempting to corner the bluefin market and hoard inventories as supply continues its downward spiral. Once the fish go commercially extinct, Mitsubishi hopes to bring in huge profits from what will become a rare delicacy. According to environmental documentarian Charles Clover, whose film The End of the Line will be released on June 8, big-fishing is accountable for deep-freezing up to 20,000 tons of the fish annually . www.takepart.com

  • @Majj Seeing the Fuku Rad Shuffle in full force already, that's a scary thought. At least it means they have a fortune in pre-Fuku tuna that they will be able to sell at a cost approaching gold before the year is out.

  • @RadioGuy , the insanity of elevating thresholds will cost politicians dearly, because the public threshold for pain does not rise commensurately.

    by Majj 7/20/2011 3:48:44 PM

  • @Edano They can feed every one for a long time.... Japan's sprawling Mitsubishi conglomerate has cornered a 40 per cent share of the world market in bluefin tuna, one of the world's most endangered fish.
A corporation within the £170bn Mitsubishi empire is importing thousands of tonnes of the fish from Europe into Tokyo's premium fish markets, despite stocks plummeting towards extinction in the Mediterranean. www.independent.co.uk
