Kyushu Electric president to resign

Kyushu Electric Power Company President Toshio Manabe will resign to take responsibility for problems related to the utility's attempts to win local approval for restarting nuclear reactors.

The firm's chairman, Shingo Matsuo, said on Tuesday that Manabe told him he would step down at their meeting earlier in the day.

Kyushu Electric plans to hold a board of directors' meeting on July 27th to decide the punishments for the executives and other officials involved.

Referring to Manabe's responsibility for the scandal, industry minister Banri Kaieda said on Friday that it is natural for a top official to take the blame. But the firm's chairman denied that Manabe was pressured to resign by the minister.
