  • TEPCO had some significantly worse rates, shifted more off on contractors and used more contractors vs. regular workers. Ohi had some high doses. This makes me wonder what happened in 2009 or if they were just that careless.

  • Kyushu Electric president to resign

Kyushu Electric Power Company President Toshio Manabe will resign to take responsibility for problems related to the utility's attempts to win local approval for restarting nuclear reactors.

The firm's chairman, Shingo Matsuo, said on Tuesday that Manabe told him he would step down at their meeting earlier in the day.

The utility systematically instructed its employees and staff of affiliates to send emails in favor of resuming 2 idled reactors at the Genkai power plant. The comments were aimed at a televised government-sponsored explanatory meeting for local residents held in June.

Kyushu Electric plans to hold a board of directors' meeting on July 27th to decide the punishments for the executives and other officials involved.
Manabe's resignation is also expected to be approved at the gathering. But his exit may come after the company takes steps to cope with the expected power shortages this summer.

Referring to Manabe's responsibility for the scandal, industry minister Banri Kaieda said on Friday that it is natural for a top official to take the blame. But the firm's chairman denied that Manabe was pressured to resign by the minister.

  • @dean so why did they not do it ?? there worker dosages are abysmal and they could have reduced them and also the situation in those reactors wouldnt have deteriorated so quickly would it?
    by elainekirk 7/20/2011 1:16:56 AM

  • I think in part they were so overwhelmed with multiple accidents that it was impossible to train the necessary focus on all plants elaine

  • @dean so were they trying to do a soft shut down when they stopped the cooling?
    by elainekirk 7/20/2011 1:36:43 AM

  • I believe they were outside of their normal procedures for establishing the reactor in a cold shutdown condition "per the procedure in a normal way" and were in some free flowing effort to ensure the reactor remained shutdown, and to the extent they could generally follow the ideas of cooling down and depressuring the PCS..
    by dean 7/20/2011 1:47:40 AM

  • when that one operator stopped the ECCS it proved some sort of error on his part, whether it was wrong logic, not enough detailed knowledge of the system or just plane didn't know..
    by dean 7/20/2011 1:49:09 AM

  • one of the things that fukushima proved to me is... the difficulty in knowing what happens when you do something on a system when under a complex plant emergency... knowing what happens seemed to be lax in my view and in fact actions taken actually moved the reactor closer to a major event
    by dean 7/20/2011 1:52:06 AM

  • however those BWR plants like all nuclear plants are very very big systems with tons of interlocks in the system to protect things ... I'm not certain the best US Commercial power plant operting crew would have been able to do much better with the same set of conditions
