They have also made a DVD on the topic and they are soon going to be producing an English version. I will let everyone know when it is available.

  • Japanese official briefs US on nuclear phase-out

Japan's State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Chiaki Takahashi has briefed US Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides on Japan's energy policy.

Takahashi met Nides in Washington on Wednesday, a week after Prime Minister Naoto Kan expressed his view that Japan should aim for a society that does not rely on nuclear power.

After the meeting, Takahashi told reporters that Nides expressed America's readiness to step up cooperation on nuclear plant safety technology, and then asked for a detailed explanation as to how Japan plans to achieve a non-nuclear society.

Takahashi said he told Nides that Japan will surely review its basic energy policy following the nuclear accident in Fukushima. Takahashi said he also explained to Nides that Japan plans to phase out its nuclear power plants gradually and will rely on nuclear power in the interim.

On Wednesday last week, Prime Minister Kan told a news conference that Japan should reduce its reliance on nuclear energy. But after he was criticized, he told his Cabinet that it was his own view and not government policy.

The United States has 104 operating reactors, the largest number in the world. It upholds its policy of promoting nuclear power even after the disaster in Fukushima.

  • Rain increases contaminated water at plant

Heavy rain brought by a tropical storm has increased the level of radioactive contaminated water at the basements of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Typhoon Ma-on moved east off the southern coast of Japan's main island of Honshu. 115 millimeters of precipitation was recorded in Namie Town, north of the plant, between Tuesday and Thursday.

Rain has been gathering in the buildings housing the reactors because the roofs were severely damaged by hydrogen explosions that occurred after the initial March 11th disaster.

Tokyo Electric Power Company or TEPCO, the plant's operator, says that at 7 AM local time on Thursday, the level of contaminated water pooled at the basement of the building of the No. 1 reactor was 44 centimeters up from the previous day.

Officials at the utility say that there is no immediate danger of the contaminated water spilling out.

But it is likely that the level of water will continue to rise for the time being. TEPCO says they are monitoring the situation.
