  • @Lilly I've posted it a few places too. It's amazing how many people think this whole incident is over.
    by Lurking 7/26/2011 3:33:41 AM

  • @Lurking I was surprised that some people didn't know any of the details of what has been going on in Japan just assumed the people were over reacting over nothing and tried to dismiss the incident. It really is a teaching opportunity if we can explain what has been going on and why it has gotten to that point in Japan. It has the potential to wake some people up.
    by lillymunster 7/26/2011 3:37:11 AM

  • @Lilly, I agree. At first many of my friends thought I had developed some sort of obsession with Fukushima. Now they ask what is going on over there. I spread as much info as I can.

  • One of my younger employees, he is 25, asked how it will affect him. I told him probably not as much as it will affect his 2 year old son. That got his attention. Then I explained the isotopes and half lives. Poor guy went pale!

  • Always good to alert people to the potential risks involved but bare in mind, also, that there are greater risks. Don't go around saying that all you have to beware of is nuclear fall down from nuclear disasters and that 1 million Americans will die in the next couple of decades (which is based on very wrong statistical science). Make sure you keep the balance. We still have other serious hazards to be aware of such as road accidents, food diet, and so on and so on.
by Pedro Jesus 7/26/2011 3:53:41 AM

  • @Pedro Jesus I feel as if those things are obvious. most people know that stepping in front of a train will kill them. This sort of thing is not being discussed, and is therefore a latent threat, however you choose to 'grade' it.

  • @Pedro Jesus Consistently elevating background radiation is a threat to the whole human race- potentially to 'humanness'- and most other dangers you mention are basically individual. That ups the ante imho.
    by M.I.A. 7/26/2011 3:59:48 AM

  • @Panserbjorne9 I'm not sure what you're trying to imply but what I meant was, we have the responsibility to alert people to potential health hazards they're not acquainted to but we can't use false arguments to support our efforts. It has been proven to work the other way around when the falsity and/or fallacy is exposed.
by Pedro Jesus 7/26/2011 4:00:36 AM

  • @Pedro Jesus In the US people will obsess about using sunblock, obsess about what additives or low quality ingredients are in their food but many are clueless about radiation or the risk level from nuclear plants if one goes south. It isn't even on their radar. Your correct also that accurate information is critical. :-)

  • @M.I.A. & Pedro Jesus I have been consistently surprised that my geiger readings here in Oregon are lower than a friend in Kentucky. My normal is .09 - .11 uSv/hr and the ones in Kentucky are .19 - .23 uSv/hr

  • @Pedro I wasnt implying anything. Accurate data is critical yet hard to come by in this situation. But no false arguments were being discussed at the time, just talking about raising awareness of the situation.

  • @Panserbjorne9 That's why we should avoid some wild extrapolations of raw data sometimes. I was really upset, and I haven't been able to confront him with it yet, when I saw an apparently scientific statistical document from our fellow Bobby1 (who is, by the way, a mod here) stating that around 22k Americans had already died from exposure to Fukushima radiation and that another 1 million would die in the not so far future if nothing would dramatically change (for the better) in the near future. That is bad science, bad information, bad everything. The only great thing I read on that document was the excellent ability to manipulate raw data in order to present the wanted (however wrong and unscientific) results. If we go that way, we lose the focus and the goal of this awesome project.

  • Japan Scientists Say Sea Radiation Tests May Miss Seafood Threat. Japan’s government has to release more data from ocean radiation tests to accurately assess the contamination threat to seafood, according to a statement by the Oceanographic Society of Japan.
The government should release radiation readings in sea water that are below its minimum measurement level, because even at those low quantities the radioactive elements may pose a danger when concentrated in seafood, the group, which counts 1,860 marine scientists as its members, said yesterday.
“Depending on the species, fish have been known to accumulate as much as 100 times the amount of pollutants in the environment,” Jota Kanda, a professor at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology specializing in marine environment, said by phone yesterday. www.bloomberg.com

    7/25/2011 5:48 PM
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraq’s Planning Ministry has announced on Monday that a shipment of Japanese tires that bear traces of nuclear pollution have entered in Iraq, saying that his Ministry would check up on the goods, coming from the country of origin.
“A shipment of Japanese tires, polluted with nuclear rays coming from Japan, has actually entered in Iraq,” Iraq’s Planning Minister, Ali Shukri, told a news conference in Baghdad, attended by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Shukri noted that his Ministry “had signed contracts with a French and a Swiss companies, to check on the goods coming from an outside point of origin.”
The Ministry has informed all Iraqi trade representations worldwide about its measure, Shukri pointed out, noting that “check up measures would start from now.” en.aswataliraq.info
