  • @elainekirk I am not a complete expert on the lattices they use in the FA design...that visual in the IAEA doc would appear to possible take care of 4 Pu rods, but from memory the Fukushima FAs were 9x9. Page 7 in this document (Japanese) shows they were analyzing the 9x9A FA design for use at Fukushima docs.google.com

  • Fukushima Diary: Mochizuki Cheshire Iori (July 26, 2011) : Contamination has spread all over in Fukushima, and now all the rest of the Japan is being contaminated by food and people’s greediness. More than 4,000 cesium beef were distributed to all over in Japan.and today it turned out that more than 10,000 cesium pork were distributed to all over in Japan.
They are re-labelled as “From western Japan” and are sold. It is irrational to think only beef and pork were polluted.Probably everything has been polluted already.
Water, vegetables, chicken, fruit, rice, etc… I’m most worried about sea food. Pollution will spread out of Japan by food chain, jet stream, and tide.

Fuji Sankei Business Eye , July 26 (Tuesday) 8:15 distribution
The rice price trend continued to decline, "catastrophe" is happening. Fear of radioactive contamination from nuclear power plant accidents TEPCO Fukushima first planted by the earthquake impact and East, the U.S. surge in demand for pre-2010 annual harvest already. Multiple brands in the U.S., which have increased 40-50% after 5 quake transactions between wholesaler prices. • Historically,9 of 10 nuc workers who got cancer have been exposed to less than 100mSv through their “short” life span. The minimum does was only 5mSv.
Plus, their exposure history was manipulated to show they’ve been exposed to lower dose than actual. One of them,a 29 years old worker was “allowed” to work though he got leukemia.
Typical symptoms, nose bleed, fatigue, unstoppable bleeding from gum.
It’s very likely that more cases like this have been hidden from the main stream. mainichi.jp translate.google.com

@South west Tokyo in April,my daughter kept nose bleeding for 4~5 days.after that,my son had the same symptom. In June, both of them had nose bleed again. My son has had his knee hurt for these days.

  • @lillymunster That was my take too. Everyone I've played that for, you can see the anger and more, the realization that we'd get as bad or worse from our own govermnent.
    by RadioGuy 7/26/2011 4:55:12 PM

  • Something about it translates. Maybe the desperation and anger? Maybe the surreal way the govt gave non answers? People seem to either are totally shocked or go to denial after watching the vid.
    by lillymunster 7/26/2011 5:03:51 PM

  • I haven't seen the denial reaction yet, maybe because I'm from Vallejo, the largest bankrupt city in California (#9 in population), with +25% real unemployment and a 60% business vacancy rate. We're used to getting this kind of crap from our government.

  • @lillymunster your link from earlier appears to have been blocked should we start saving and could you/have you host/ed the pic (the cots with limit comparisons) just to send Japan the message that the people will be heard
    by elainekirk 7/26/2011 5:27:34 PM

  • @lillymunster to clarify the link works here but I placed it on fbook and it got blocked
    by elainekirk 7/26/2011 5:28:48 PM

  • @RadioGuy I saw a couple I think on Boing Boing or YouTube, not necessarily the bastions of reasoned conversation. It was an interesting knee jerk reaction by a few people sort of a blame the victim/denial thing. They claimed the people must be over reacting, it couldn't possibly be that people are desperate and afraid and the government officials just basically told them to eat shitake and walked out..I think it is more of a sign of people that really don't want to have their bubble burst that things are that bad in the civilized world.

  • @Peter Melzer You mean the "designated with compass-drawn circular zones that bear no relation whatever to plume dispersal"? So if you were in one of the areas that was in the circle but was largely missed by the plume, you can get KI supplements, but if you live in one of the ACTUALLY irradiated areas outside those meaningless circles, you can't? Way to look out for your peeps, Japan.
    by RadioGuy 7/26/2011 5:37:50 PM

  • Too bad they didn't have actual projections they could have used to make them meaningful, like from SPEEDI or someone.

Oh wait... they did... DAYS after the explosions way back in mid-March.
    by RadioGuy 7/26/2011 5:40:20 PM

  • @RadioGuy, sort of, but they say somewhere else that adjustments to the zones were going to be made as needed. The whole explanation is nebulous to me, because though they claim that more than enough pills were doled out to the municipalities in the zones than strictly needed, the actual dispense was left to the local authorities. I do not quite understand who eventually decided who would be eligible for the pills and who gave the nod to take them.
by Peter Melzer 7/26/2011 5:47:16 PM

  • @lillymunster , even if overreaction was the case, the government promised to provide for the psychological well-being of the "sufferers" as they call them.
by Peter Melzer 7/26/2011 5:49:44 PM

  • The best I can tell from watching in a foreign language is that they didn't dispense dosimeters because then they'd have to admit the levels, and they didn't do widespread KI supplements for the same reason. Not that the KI would have done anything at all for the Cs-137, which is far more dangerous because of it's longevity and the ease of its uptake.
    by RadioGuy 7/26/2011 5:53:05 PM

  • Mostly I see it as a wake-up call to reexamine our alleged "disaster management plans" which seem to be based of assumptions that time and again are proven false. They all seem to rely far too much on support systems that are as vulnerable to the crises as the ones they are meant to support.
    by RadioGuy 7/26/2011 5:56:10 PM

  • @RadioGuy , it may have been too late by the time they distributed the iodine pills.
by Peter Melzer 7/26/2011 5:56:16 PM

  • @Peter Melzer Yes, given the cesium levels, the KI would have been only a sop to the people to let them think GoJ cares, but the importance of that cannot be underestimated.
    by RadioGuy 7/26/2011 5:58:13 PM

  • @RadioGuy , the NISA report narrates that there was little advance preparation for a nuclear accident. They could not assemble the emergency staff in a timely fashion and even had to move their local HQ because the location was unusable.

  • Strike two against our "disaster management plans": they all seem to take as their initial premise that "this will never happen, but just in case..." so they're not very well-considered before they are rubber-stamped.

  • @Peter Melzer those icrp links I put up earlier the 2009 accounts had japan paying 30.000 fot 2009 then a further 20.000 so obviously they had a lot of input on radiation doses I will see if i can find any docs
    p.s. the .000's are UK £'s
    by elainekirk 7/26/2011 6:05:03 PM

  • All too often it turns out to be like the infamous British Memo. We know what safety cost we can afford to make this profitable, so we're fixing the data around those numbers. Excel "what-if" games trump actual safety every time.
    by RadioGuy 7/26/2011 6:07:15 PM

  • @elainekirk, the frightening aspect is that on the Saturday after the quake, there was no coordinated first response to the looming reactor crisis.

  • @Peter Melzer after working with Japan on this issue for 2yrs it is beyond me that they didnt respond better and faster but then I have yet to see what the ICRP reccomend I dont think I dare look either
    by elainekirk 7/26/2011 6:11:01 PM

  • @Peter Melzer Yes, baffling. The backups are off-line, the cooling is off-line, the pools are headed toward boiling, the RPV water levels are falling and pressures are rising, and yet no plan kicks into gear.
