I think this school is trying to raise funds for a food testing system and some radiation detectors. If any of our wonderful translation capable people can take a peek at it and make sure the google translate is correct it would be a huge help.

by elainekirk 7/31/2011 11:09:08 PM

@elainekirk If we can find an e-book version we might be able to do some rough translations on it. Adelstein does some great work.

I wonder if the book is the basis for this site. Lots of claims of old TEPCO malfeasance but much doesn't link to a source

I had coffee and cigarettes with Onda Katsunobu, the author of 東京電力:帝国の暗黒 (Darkness Of The TEPCO Empire). I admire his diligence. 30 yrs.

@elainekirk I really want to know who funded the new governor's campaign. Want to take some bets TEPCO gave him a big campaign donation?

Quote of the day from one of those citing the book:'The Atlantic points out:
The reason for official reluctance to admit that the earthquake did direct structural damage to reactor one is obvious. Katsunobu Onda, author of TEPCO: The Dark Empire … who sounded the alarm about the firm in his 2007 book explains it this way: “If TEPCO and the government of Japan admit an earthquake can do direct damage to the reactor, this raises suspicions about the safety of every reactor they run. They are using a number of antiquated reactors that have the same systematic problems, the same wear and tear on the piping.”"

Power industry unions donate over 100 mil. yen to DPJTOKYO, Aug. 1, Kyodo
The ruling Democratic Party of Japan received over 100 million yen in donations in the three years through 2009 from political groups formed by workers' unions of electric power companies, a Kyodo News survey showed Sunday.
With power company executives already known to have provided large contributions to the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party, the union funding shows that both the labor and management sides of the industry have sought to maintain their clout with the country's two top political parties.
The power industry's labor groups provided at least 111 million yen to the DPJ headquarters as well as 33 parliamentarians including Katsuya Okada, former party president and current secretary general, and former science minister Tatsuo Kawabata between 2007 and 2009, according to publicly available political fund reports.

why do workers' unions donate to the government ??? sounds funny.
by Edano 8/1/2011 12:41:52 AM

Hi Bo!
@Edano, in the US unions are a big political donor but they operate far from whatever industry & corporations are doing.
by lillymunster 8/1/2011 12:47:01 AM

@lillymunster : but it's the workers' money that they give away...
by Edano 8/1/2011 12:49:21 AM

@Edano US unions donate based on general agreement of all workers in that union so it is mostly an agreed thing and independent of any corporations they work for. They donate to candidate campaigns, the money doesn't go to the govt. itself. What sounds odd is that both the unions and the corporations are doing this somewhat in unison. Makes me wonder if their unions are corrupted.
by lillymunster 8/1/2011 12:56:54 AM

@Thunder OK, let me rephrase that. More corrupt than usual. :-)
