Never has being right been so sad - he says they must have good iodine - those people of fuku being told to trust this turncoat
www.hotthyroidology.com2006 CHERNOBYL BEYOND 20 YEARS AND THYROID CANCER
Shunichi Yamashita
Introduction
Thyroid cancer is the most common type of human solid tumors associated with external ionizing radiation exposure, especially if irradiation occurs in neonates, infants and children (1). The health impacts of the Chernobyl accident have recently been reviewed by the World Health Organization (WHO) (2). Since the Chernobyl accident, specific attention has been paid to an internal exposure of the thyroid gland and its close relationship with childhood thyroid cancer (3). The appropriate prophylaxis of iodine administration just after the accident like in Poland (4) could contribute to mitigate the increase of childhood thyroid cancer and also decrease the future risk of thyroid cancer occurrence. Iodine deficiency is another risk factor of radiation-induced thyroid cancer around Chernobyl (5).

The latest study in Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb survivors in Japan has indicated that a biological effect from a single brief external exposure to ionizing radiation nearly 60 years in the past still occurs and can be detected (30). In childhood, once exposed even to low doses of ionizing radiation, either externally or internally, the cancer-prone cell damage within the thyroid gland can be preserved for a long time. Today, special attention should be paid to a high risk group of individuals who have been exposed to radioactive iodines just after the Chernobyl accident and who are now 20 to 30 year-old. Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms of radiation-induced thyroid cancer is expected to contribute to the disease prevention and treatment in the coming future. - Shunichi Yamashita

@Will should we make it our goal that he is unseated by the end of the week ?
by elainekirk 8/14/2011 6:18:07 PM

@Will Hi Will! I had hoped when they shuffled him off to Fukushima it was to "study" the post disaster issues, not make policy impacting the victims. How anyone can justify this guy having his job is mind boggling.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 6:21:43 PM

@elainekirk I am not sure of the more recent chain of events with Yamashita but I have not seen lots of outrage and criticism for the study yet so maybe it is just being found out. At least here we can try to do something and stop it.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 6:35:06 PM

@Will LOL. I would volunteer him to be the guy to go take readings in #3.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 6:41:23 PM

@Will yes he should be made to show the people how harmless radiation is

@ elaine.. I'm trying to decide what to do some research on and a write up... I was wondering if the rate of abortions due to worries over fukushima have increased..... thoughts/
by dean 8/14/2011 6:58:48 PM

it's not nuclear but perhaps of interest since there is so much worry about cancers
by dean 8/14/2011 6:59:39 PM

nige.wordpress.com @ all.. an article which discusses a number of 100,000 abortions after the chernobyl accident which may have been prevented
by dean 8/14/2011 7:07:44 PM

@Will.. hi will... perhaps bo would
by dean 8/14/2011 7:08:24 PM

@Will @dean there are two papers further down that I linked to they are written by him and say radiation is dangerous and children should have early and continual supply of good iodine the man is a turncoat
by elainekirk 8/14/2011 7:11:48 PM

@dean Hi Dean. Rockhopper actually mentioned that the other day. She moderates or talks with a womens group that I think discusses a variety of womens issues in Japan. The group had a mention about the ability to use ultrasound and abortion in Japan if major deformities came up and if it was ethical etc. She mentioned an earlier discussion of quality of life of people with disabilities in Japan related to acceptance etc.
It would be an interesting study vs. Chernobyl. Some of the unreleated public health information I read in the past talked about how religious and social norms in Poland kept the abortion rate abnormally low there. Not sure how that factors to Russia and Belarus. Poland is predominantly catholic.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 7:12:03 PM

about 1/2 way through that link I put up there is a conversation about the abortions, chernobyl and fukushima
by dean 8/14/2011 7:13:48 PM

@Dean I am trying to find unbiased studies on low radiation doses and cancers to find some factual information for people. This seems to be a hard issue they are not getting clear answers to ie: will such and such exposure lead to what percentage or chance of cancer. I think people want some quantifiable information and they are not getting it.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 7:13:54 PM

I think the medical field is reluctant to put generalized equivalences out probably because there are so many variables involved.. .altho.. we may be able to come up with a rule of thumb approach that people can see... I've read lately that veggies, fruits etc that are peeled significantly reduces the chance of up take from the surface contamination.. very difficult thing... drinking milt would be a good one. or water where you ingest it.. we should collectively research it and come up with some general thumb rules
by dean 8/14/2011 7:19:47 PM

by dean 8/14/2011 7:22:08 PM

@ lilly haven't we also shown that 'when' they are exposed with internal uptake there are measures that can be taken to reduce the affects in the body.. so there are preventative measures even if they have no choice but to drink the water etc.
by dean 8/14/2011 7:24:15 PM

@dean there is lots of info that talks about methods of contamination. I have found a few studies that stated a percentage range per a certain dose with a percentage of reliability. Those are a little easier to quantify into something the average person can understand.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 7:24:40 PM

@dean Beyond filtration I found some evidence on baking soda, certain clays and boron but there are limited studies.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 7:25:35 PM

I ran across an article that had 13 steps that can be taken to reduce affects from contamination affects for ingestion... i thought I posted it here the other day
by dean 8/14/2011 7:29:03 PM

@dean the thyroid can't be protected by any other means than iodine though can it?
by elainekirk 8/14/2011 7:32:40 PM

@ elaine, I think we could come up with some pointers other that strictly the potassium iodide tablets. they use radioactive iodine to treat thyroid cancers in adults and children and there may be some things gleened out of that treatment and post treatment diets or plans to reduce the affects
by dean 8/14/2011 7:36:37 PM

I didn't see that article, I could have missed it.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 7:38:00 PM

Dean we did find a few things and some radio protective foods that cancer patients receiving radio iodine treatment are told to avoid. The coping with radiation page

by dean 8/14/2011 7:40:57 PM

@dean possibly it is possible edano would understand more
by elainekirk 8/14/2011 7:40:57 PM

@ lilly.. we all know GOJ have been tweeking the limits etc. but, a simple guide would be so nice that, if you drink water or milk etc or food containing X levels of Cs or I-131 the risks for cancers increase by X %. I"m sure people there are drinking the water and milk and eating the food because they have to, knowing all well that the chances of getting cancers increase
by dean 8/14/2011 7:44:37 PM

the who guide below says no you shouldnt drink milk etc
by elainekirk 8/14/2011 7:45:27 PM

@dean oh yes. That is the kind of thing people need. Foods are being sold if they are under the limit but not telling people how much was found. You don't eat just one mushroom and be done. People eat many things every day. Under limits is just frustrating people.

WHO FAQs: Japan nuclear concerns
www.who.intThis is in the WHO doc
FAQs: Japan nuclear concerns
What general advice can be given to food consumers and producers in the event of a nuclear emergency?
The response to an emergency involving radioactivity should be the same as the response to any emergency involving any hazardous material contaminating food. In the early stages of an emergency, and if it is safe to do so, it is possible to take immediate actions to prevent or minimize the contamination of food by radiological materials. For example, it is possible to do the following:
protect food and animal fodder which is stored in the open; cover with plastic sheets or impermeable tarpaulins;
close the ventilation of greenhouses to protect growing vegetables;
bring livestock in from pastures and move animals into a shed or barn;
harvest any ripe crops and place under cover before any fallout has been recorded; and
don’t harvest after fallout – wait for further instructions after contamination has been recorded.
Many other short-, medium- and long-term actions need to be considered in areas confirmed to be seriously contaminated, such as:
avoid consumption of locally produced milk or vegetables;
avoid slaughtering animals;
avoid consumption and harvesting of aquatic animals and plants (including fish, shellfish, and algae); and
avoid hunting or gathering mushrooms or other wild or collected foods.by elainekirk 8/14/2011 7:49:09 PM

@elainekirk milk is considered a major vector for internal contamination and was key in the thyroid risks to kids downwind of hanford and the nevada tests.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 7:49:32 PM

@lillymunster so Japan are just ignoring who guidance
by elainekirk 8/14/2011 7:51:06 PM

@elainekirk I think they are not being given WHO guidance and WHO seems to not even be around over there.
by lillymunster 8/14/2011 7:51:56 PM

@ lilly.. one point is that any veggy should be peeled to take the outer layer off which could reduce the amount of contamination considerably

@lillymunster I was just thinking if we could put relative docs in some kind of order ie international guidance / debunking the prat/ what the people rquire of gov if we could do that so the basics were there for tem to present
