  • @elainekirk Now, I havent. I will. But now I need to run to get breakfast and leave for the aka-tsubu wrapping mtg :) Talk to you soon! I will send you a list of current health concern among parents.
    by ikrockhopper 8/14/2011 10:53:31 PM

  • @ikrockhopper the tests mr yamashita did are not at all suitable to detect radiation exposure to the thyroid. i am puzzled how he could interpolate 35mSv equivalents with his tests. this study now seems ridiculous to me. i am very ashamed, because i am MD.
    by Edano 8/14/2011 10:56:04 PM

  • @Edano just remembered what you wrote earlier about funding so searching for that
    by elainekirk 8/14/2011 11:00:43 PM

  • it came to my mind that they might want to do a long term study (decades) about the effects on fuku children regarding the thyroid. so they really just check for cancer. this you can do by needle aspiration. right now there will be no cancer due to fuku, so maybe they want to sort out patients who already have thyroid damage. then they make regular checks to see if cancer develops. but the tests they did now cannot detect radiation exposure. so i cannot explain how he "diagnosted" a certain exposure dose (35 mSv) on a certain child.
    by Edano 8/14/2011 11:03:20 PM

  • i have found a document that forbids thyroid scans and other diagnostics by other doctors than those sent by the government. this is made, says the document, to prevent panic of residents who have been pushed in false diagnoses by these non official doctors.
    by Edano 8/14/2011 11:07:19 PM

  • @Edano i thought they did actual gamma scans on a group of children?
    by lillymunster 8/14/2011 11:07:30 PM

  • We should go back and look at the image and details. I think it was on momsavechild? We need to know if that was an actual scan or an extrapolation. I am thinking it was a scan?
    by lillymunster 8/14/2011 11:09:14 PM

  • @lillymunster i thought that too in the beginning. but with rockhopper's documents, there is no word of gamma scans.
    by Edano 8/14/2011 11:09:45 PM

  • @Edano they scanned x number of children from x number of towns to extropolate findings to asses all children
    by elainekirk 8/14/2011 11:10:20 PM

  • @elainekirk more than 1000 children ?

    by elainekirk 8/14/2011 11:23:02 PM

  • @Edano I am thinking not I seem to recall I thought the numbers very low to be representative just looking now
    by elainekirk 8/14/2011 11:23:57 PM

  • @Edano now I am even more confused webcache.googleusercontent.com still looking for article in question but thought this worth you reading mdn.mainichi.jp
    by elainekirk 8/14/2011 11:27:27 PM

  • by elainekirk 8/14/2011 11:29:38 PM

  • I hope people are not being told they will be tested and instead get the ultrasound and questionnaire and no real test! How many understand the difference between and ultrasound and a gamma scanner?
    by lillymunster 8/14/2011 11:35:43 PM

  • @lillymunster that's the point. they don't get tested, they get studied about how many develop cancer. and if you think further ..... they select the people that are most likely to develop it.
    by Edano 8/14/2011 11:39:56 PM

  • @Edano trying to figure out how to get more detail on the 35 msv one. The captures are images so can't translate.
    by lillymunster 8/14/2011 11:40:53 PM

  • they must have a control group far away from fuku, maybe in nagasaki.
    by Edano 8/14/2011 11:40:59 PM

  • I wonder if something where normal physicians could do scans and report results would be more honest way to check people? At least the physician could give the person honest advice and the report to the govt of the level only could possibly keep someone honest?
    by lillymunster 8/14/2011 11:42:41 PM

  • @lillymunster

    by bo 8/15/2011 12:14:20 AM

  • What we were looking at earlier is the translation of the study says nothing about actually doing a gamma scan of people's thyroid to give them an actual dose to know. There was also a news article that gave the impression people would get gamma scans but didn't explicitly say it. If people only get after the fact care it is like they are brewing cancer in them on purpose. I would assume if someone knew their dose they could act on it sooner or if they don't have a high dose get some comfort that their risk may be lower.
    by lillymunster 8/15/2011 12:20:13 AM

  • I can see how this study could mess up someone's lawsuit for compensation. No thyroid dose scan, plausible deniability until it is decades later.
    by lillymunster 8/15/2011 12:21:42 AM

  • Rockhopper emailed the list of concerns from the parents group:
    1) Food safety. The cutoff is too high. 500Bq/kg for food, and 200 for
liquid. This will become serious issue when rice harvest season
    arrives around Fukushima.

    2) Thyroid problems (not just cancer) after the NHK news two days ago
(1149 test results, including the 35msv). But, not that much
attention, unfortunately. I guess, it's because people still believe
the 100mSv ICRP cutoff and Yamashita's comment, and forgot about this
    issue.

    3) Congenital deformity and other diseases among newborns (exposed in the womb)

    4) Reproductive health among children. This info is going around.
Effects of radiation to oocyte and spermatocyte (especially oocyte,
because it's in girl's body at the birth)
    ameblo.jp

this blog says this is based on ICRP.

    Girl
    temporary infertility
    - Acute radiation exposure 0.65-1.5 Gy
    permanent infertility
    - Acute radiation exposure 2.5-6.0 Gy
    - Chronic exposure 0.2 Gy/year

    Boy
    temporary infertility
    - Acute radiation exposure 0.15 Gy
    - Chronic exposure 0.4 Gy/year
    permanent infertility
    - Acute radiation exposure 3.5-6.0 Gy
    - Chronic exposure 2.0 Gy/year
    One more.
    5) effectiveness of things like EM fungi, fermented rice water,
vitamins, and all other things to reduce negative health effects of
radiation. There are many radiation-related frauds happening already.

  • 1.2 Assessment of effective dose by internal exposure
The effective dose by inhalation of iodine released into the atmosphere should be evaluated
from the following equation on the basis of the relative concentration of iodine in the surface air
and iodine 131 equivalent amount, in accordance with “Guidelines for Weather Conditions.”
Note that the values of a one-year old child shown in Table 1 are used as parameters for the
    calculation.
    Effective dose = KHe・M・Qe・(x/Q)
KHe: Effective dose coefficient of a child by inhalation of I-131
    M: Child’s breathing rate
Qe: Amount of released iodine (I-131 equivalent amount)
    (x/Q): Relative concentration
Note that the breathing rate should be selected according to how and how long iodine is released.
I-131 equivalent amount Qe in this case refers to a sum of values obtained by multiplying the
amount of each isotope by the ratio of the effective dose coefficient of each isotope of iodine to
the I-131 effective dose coefficient. It is calculated from the following equation.
      

Table 2 are used for a major accident and a hypothetical accident, respectively.
