M6.8 quake hits Miyagi and FukushimaA magnitude 6.8 earthquake jolted the disaster-affected prefectures of Miyagi and Fukushima in northeastern Japan on Friday afternoon. A tsunami advisory was issued, but was later lifted.
The Meteorological Agency says the quake struck at around 2:36 PM. Its focus was off Fukushima, at a depth of 20 kilometers.
Tremors with an intensity of 5 minus on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 were observed in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. Smaller tremors were felt in wide areas from northern to western Japan.
The agency withdrew a tsunami advisory issued to coastal areas of Miyagi and Fukushima about 40 minutes after the quake.
No abnormalities are reported at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant that was struck by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami.
Tokyo Electric Power Company says external power sources are intact and that radiation readings around the plant are showing no changes.
Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture says one person suffered a light injury. Fukushima Prefecture says there have been no reports of damage or casualties.
The Meteorological Agency says the latest quake is likely to be an aftershock from March. It warns that more strong tremors are possible during active seismic periods that will likely recur in cycles.

here is the story from an actual newssite rather than agoracosmopolitan. I hate given them traffic, it only encourages their bad behavior. :-)
From Japan Times on the residents urine

Two statements from the JT article
""This won't be a problem if they don't eat vegetables or other products that are contaminated," said Nanao Kamada, professor emeritus of radiation biology at Hiroshima University. "But it will be difficult for people to continue living in these areas.""
""The figures did not exceed the maximum of 20 millisieverts a year, but we want residents to use these results to make decisions (to move)," said Kamada."
Then evacuate them already!

Gov't defers lifting of ban on Fukushima beef shipments
TOKYO, Aug. 19, Kyodo
The government decided Friday not to lift a ban on cattle shipments from Fukushima Prefecture for some time as beef contaminated with an excessive level of radioactive cesium was reported to have been found there, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said.
The government had planned to lift the ban for the prefecture, where the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is located.
Edano, however, told a news conference that a ban on beef shipments from adjacent Miyagi Prefecture was partially lifted, starting on Friday as planned. english.kyodonews.jp

Edano's ears have grown ....
by Edano 8/19/2011 11:42:07 AM

@Edano maybe Kan has been tugging on his ears? He looks really fatigued.
by lillymunster 8/19/2011 11:45:50 AM

i think it was the radioactive strawberry.
by Edano 8/19/2011 11:46:41 AM

Looking at the video of the quake on the previous page. Dense steam starts to obscure the 3-4 tower as the quake progresses. It is hard to tell where it is coming from but it would be between the tower and the camera so likely #3 is the source. It isn't clouds.

by Edano 8/19/2011 11:56:10 AM

@Edano what did you think of his comments about total melt-through? (china syndrom)
by lillymunster 8/19/2011 11:59:04 AM

@tomo-kun We thought about trying to send a letter or petition early on and could not figure out who or how to send something to the UN. Glad someone is doing something to try to call attention.
by lillymunster 8/19/2011 12:00:25 PM

@lillymunster hard to say ... yes i think there has leaked some corium through the building. but we have no data. we can only suggest.
by Edano 8/19/2011 12:02:36 PM

@Edano I didn't interpret corium relocating outside the building to be a "china syndrome" situation. I considered that to be burning all the way through the basemat and I don't think we know enough to know if it did that.
by lillymunster 8/19/2011 12:10:38 PM

by Edano 8/19/2011 12:11:43 PM

@lillymunster agreed.
