Japanese doctors warn of public health problems caused by Fukushima radiation. english.aljazeera.net
    by Mona 8/19/2011 3:52:59 AM

  • In the article Dr. Yanagisawa says, summed up by Enenews:

“We are encountering new situations we cannot explain with the body of knowledge we have relied upon up until now.”
“The situation at the Daiichi Nuclear facility in Fukushima has not yet been fully stabilised, and we can’t yet see an end in sight, [...] Because the nuclear material has not yet been encapsulated, radiation continues to stream into the environment.”
“Now the Japanese government is underestimating the effects of low dosage and/or internal exposures and not raising the evacuation level even to the same level adopted in Chernobyl [...] People’s lives are at stake, especially the lives of children, and it is obvious that the government is not placing top priority on the people’s lives in their measures.”
“Incidence of cancer will undoubtedly increase [...] In the case of children, thyroid cancer and leukemia can start to appear after several years. In the case of adults, the incidence of various types of cancer will increase over the course of several decades.”

  • @All hi again! Quickly on the weather, the system seems to have broken down alot and not delivered the widespread heavy rain forecast to most areas, currently the rain is in the lower end of the scale(thankfully), with falls around the 30-50mm mark for 24 hours across most of the Northern central area of Japan, sporadic heavy falls continue to occur in isolated areas and will continue for the next 24-48 hours with some stations recording 40mm+ in one hour and others with 90mm+ over 3 hours. Thankfully though it seems the event will continue to only produce these sporadic isolated heavy falls and hopefully Fukushima npp will see less than 150mm accumulated over 72 hours for the entire event! @All have to go again now, stay well!:-)

  • M6.8 quake shakes northeastern Japan, tsunami warning issued

    TOKYO, Aug. 19, Kyodo

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 jolted northeastern Japan on Friday afternoon, but caused no abnormalities at the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the Japan Meteorological Agency and the plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

The agency issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast following the 2:36 p.m. quake, which measured lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.

Along with the Fukushima plant, Tohoku Electric Power Co. also said there were no abnormalities at its Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi.

  • Low level of radioactive cesium found in rice grown in Ibaraki Pref.

    MITO, Japan, Aug. 19, Kyodo

A small amount of radioactive cesium has been detected in rice, the staple food item in Japan, that was grown in the city of Hokota, Ibaraki Prefecture, some 150 kilometers southwest of the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the Ibaraki prefectural government said Friday.

A pre-harvest preliminary check showed that the amount of radioactive cesium detected came to 52 becquerels per kilogram of raw rice, a figure far below the government-set allowable level of 500 becquerels, the local government said.

Previously, very low levels of radioactive cesium had been detected in rice hulls and raw rice grown in the cities of Tsukuba and Joso, both in Ibaraki Prefecture. The amounts came to less than 20 becquerels, a figure that can be treated as ''not detectable,'' city governments there said earlier. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Radiation detected in rice

Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo, says it has detected small amounts of radioactive cesium in rice plant samples taken at a rice field in the prefecture.

The prefecture tested rice taken from rice plant samples from 3 locations in Hokota City.

23 becquerels of radioactive cesium 134 and 29 becquerels of radioactive cesium 137 were detected in rice from one of the 3 locations.

It is the first time that radioactive cesium has been detected in rice after the March nuclear accident.

The agriculture ministry says radiation detected in rice from the city is well below the government limit, and that it poses no health risks.

The prefecture plans to conduct radiation tests again after rice from the city is harvested.

  • The government and TEPCO plan to bring in more than 4,000 experts to measure radiation levels and manage workers' exposure to radioactivity to end the crisis at the quake-crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said it will need more experts to measure radiation levels not only at the Fukushima plant, but in municipalities around the plant where residents will return once evacuation orders are lifted.

Under the plan to bring the nuclear crisis to an end, which was revised on Aug. 17, about 4,000 experts will be trained in radiation measurements and about 250 in exposure management.

TEPCO said it will need more measurement experts in addition to the current corps of about 2,500--1,900 at the company and its affiliates who have already received training and 600 from other electric power companies.

Separately, about 250 workers will acquire more advanced knowledge and manage workers' exposure to radioactivity within the stricken facility northeast of Tokyo.

It is difficult to secure a sufficient number of these experts because they often have to work in areas with high radiation levels.

TEPCO is also trying to find electricians and other engineers through the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, which is made up of companies involved in the nuclear power industry.
