  • @elainekirk Good question. It certainly could be.

  • @Edano @lillymunster Did you ever find any info/refs/pics locating the drywell sensors? I noticed in the latest SimplyInfo update on the high radiation figures in #1 a mention that, 'The drywell sensors are in the concrete containment bulb below the reactor pressure vessel.' All I've gathered is that the CAMS (Containment Atmospheric Monitoring System) detectors are somewhere outside of the containment and pumps suck two independent samples of air (Range A and Range B) from the drywell along pipes to external radiation detectors for evaluation, and that H2 and O2 concentration as well as gamma radioactivity is measured.

  • @LM I dont know too much about these things but a desalination that could filter out all their junk would be a pretty tall order and tepco dont seem to worry about how much muck floats out of their sfp's so I cant see them being overly worried about what escapes the desalination
    by elainekirk 8/18/2011 11:18:46 PM

  • @elainekirk I agree...a tall order indeed. At this point it seems they can get away with anything and not pay the consequences. The PR is impressive.

  • Nuclear safety agency advised Niigata gov't not to hold joint quake, nuke disaster drill

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) discouraged the Niigata Prefectural Government from holding a disaster drill envisaging the simultaneous occurrence of an earthquake and nuclear disaster, it has been learned.

A study by a government panel investigating the causes of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant found that NISA had advised the Niigata Prefectural Government not to hold the twin-disaster drill in 2010, saying it could cause fear and invite misunderstanding among residents. mdn.mainichi.jp

  • @es no, we never found the drywell sensors positions, though we searched for them. i think they might be different in each reactor.

  • A new paper in The Lancet on a precautionary medical procedure some experts recommend, but the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan rejects. Key points:

"A clinically significant haemopoietic syndrome can occur after whole-body doses of 2 Gy or higher as a result of bone-marrow depression. If the haemopoietic cells are not completely damaged, a recovery phase can be enhanced through use of haemopoietic growth factors. In cases of radiation exposure of more than 5 Gy, haemopoietic stem-cell rescue is essential. […] On March 25, we proposed the collection and storage of autologous peripheral-blood stem cells (PBSCs) for the nuclear workers in Fukushima in case of accidental major radiation exposure [… But] The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan, an advisory panel made up of non-government experts, reportedly stated that there is no need to collect and store autologous PBSCs."

  • @Vivre sorry got sidetracked rockhopper just tweeed another mainichi article translate.google.com
taken with the article below saying the plant is so safe you can toddle round it for a year and still be under the limit and you just have to wonder what they are up to

  • Here's a letter in the same issue of The Lancet www.thelancet.com also on worker protection. It makes this important point about Strontium-90 (90Sr) I didn't realize: "Chemically similar to calcium, 90Sr is a bone-seeker radioactive isotope and gets preferentially incorporated into bone, especially in areas of active bone remodelling. Once introduced into the body, 90Sr can accumulate and persist in skeletal tissues for decades."
    by Ian 8/19/2011 1:00:10 AM

  • A single exposure of some radionuclides like cesium can thankfully pass through the body in a fairly short time, but it seems Strontium-90 can stick with you for decades!
    by Ian 8/19/2011 1:03:14 AM

  • @Ian and cause leukemia at any age by damaging the bone mark.
    by Edano 8/19/2011 1:03:20 AM

  • @Ian so they didn't collect from workers like they said was going to happen? :-(
    by lillymunster 8/19/2011 1:06:21 AM

  • @elainekirk I can set that as a short article so we can tweet it.
    by lillymunster 8/19/2011 1:07:21 AM

  • @Elaine, good point, they should see both of these papers! @Edano, eek! Yeah, that would be an obvious way for leukemia to happen. @lilly, seems that way! :(

  • @elainekirk It makes me wonder what was really going on in the US govt at home. Obama and the EPA were telling everyone it is just like a plane ride and to go busy themselves with something else. At the same time they were considering evacuating all the expats and most of the military.
    by lillymunster 8/19/2011 3:02:36 AM

  • That story needs to make rounds in the US.
