  • Earlier claims by TEPCO was that the steam dryer and some reactor pipes were in the SFP. None were shown on the SFP video. They filled the reactor well when the workers started going into #4 to lower the radiation levels. There is still something in all of this that doesn't quite add up. The Yellow cap and the reactor cap are parked on the deck. I never found the steam dryer

  • Japan PM Kan to announce his resignation

    TOKYO, Aug. 26, Kyodo

Prime Minister Naoto Kan is expected to announce his resignation later Friday after securing parliamentary passage of budget and renewable energy bills, as he promised two months ago.

The Democratic Party of Japan's presidential election to choose the successor to Kan, the current leader of the ruling party, will take place on Monday, when only its 398 lawmakers will be eligible to vote.

More than four lawmakers, a record number since the party was formed in 1998, including former Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara and Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda, may file for candidacy when campaigning officially begins on Saturday. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Gov't to complete renovation of disaster-hit levees in 5 yrs

    TOKYO, Aug. 26, Kyodo

The government is aiming to complete the renovation of all levees destroyed or damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami within five years, according to the land ministry's infrastructure restoration schedule obtained by Kyodo News on Thursday.

The central and local governments will also restore expressways in Pacific coastal areas by the end of next year and distribution facilities at disaster-hit ports within two years, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism schedule showed.

The ministry plans to present the plan at a meeting of the government's reconstruction panel Friday morning. Necessary reconstruction costs are likely to be included in the third supplementary budget for fiscal 2011. english.kyodonews.jp

  • @lillymunster, there was that darkening to the tops of some SFP4 racks www.youtube.com But the logic doesn't work for zirconium fires, for it the racks were exposed to open air, the explosion should have caused visible damage to their delicate structures which can be seen very close up in Tepco's video in the pool. Unit 4 is full of unsolved mysteries!

  • And I'm using past tense hopefully. I know it's a whole different thing, but remember Tohoku was never supposed to get quakes that big. And I'm talking about the 7.3 everyone thought was the big one until the 9.0 three days later.

  • Just a thought on the 5 & 6 if tepco claims they are in working condition and the government orders them taken out of service permanently will tepco get a dollop of taxpayers dosh that they wouldnt get if the reactors were knackered ?

  • Cattle farmer comments on lifting of bans

A cattle farmer in Iwate Prefecture has expressed mixed feelings concerning Thursday's announcement by the government on the lifting of its ban on beef cattle shipments in the region.

Ryoichi Hatsugai has about 50 head of brand cattle from which Maezawa beef is made. His source of income has been cut off since the government placed a shipment ban on cows in the region on August 1st. He had to dip into his savings to cover feed and other expenses.

Hatsugai said the bans have been lifted at long last. But he said he is worried about whether prices of beef will return to the levels they were before the March 11th disaster, as beef prices have slumped since the disaster and the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

He said he wants the government to assure the public that beef in the region is safe, and to consider compensation for the damage farmers in the region have suffered.

"A model plant is assumed to be located at a coastal site facing the Pacific
    Ocean.
Population and agricultural production data from the 1990 census"

The Model Plant in the Level 3 PSA Program at JAERI specifies (p.28)
    "1100MWe BWR5 with Mark-II type containment
    – One of the most common plant type in Japan"

  • They don't specifically mention Fukushima but it clearly is the region.
    by lillymunster 8/26/2011 12:52:19 AM

  • @RadioGuy, right. Fukushima was a consequence of earthquake and tsunami. If only one had happened, less would have gone wrong. Unit 1 might have melted down on the eq alone, but chances are the double whammy made it worse. By the end of it, it was a triple whammy for Fukushimans, who took quake, tsunami and 3 meltdowns on top... wait, that's a quintuple whammy!

    by lillymunster 8/26/2011 1:03:58 AM

  • by the way: have we ever talked about the efficiency of nukes ? a plant with 1100 MW electrical output uses 3300 MW thermal output. that means 2/3 of the energy is lost and has to be cooled down by offsite power (or is released to the ocean). it is extremely ineffective. they take us away our lightbulbs but they waste energy on extreme levels.
    by Edano 8/26/2011 1:04:41 AM

    by lillymunster 8/26/2011 1:06:37 AM

  • @lillymunster @Edano the 1/3 thermal power efficiency is a basic law of thermodynamics and dates back to steam engines, its true for coal, oil, nukes, geothermal
