  • I personal don't like this blog but what it is telling here is very grave : URGENT – URGENT: NJ, NY Hurricane Irene Storm Surge Flood Simulation Model. To be clear, the Weather center has issued a 3 to 6 foot storm surge warning for the East Coast of NJ, and from the Delaware Bay down to the Chesapeake they are warning of a 5 to 10 foot storm surge and in North Caroline a 6 to 12 foot storm surge. But what the hell does that mean? That doesn’t tell us where the flooding will occur. We are just supposed to evacuate having no clue if our homes will be destroyed before we return? Meanwhile the government has simulations and forecasts showing exactly were the damn flooding will hit their military bases and knows to evacuate them. What the ****?
I just happened to come across the hurricane storm surge flood simulation from NOAA for Central NJ, which to the 2 million people living in the area will provide great clarity. If you can find these for other areas, please help get them out to people who need them.
The floor simulation for my area is based on a hypothetical category 3 hurricane. It starts off with a 3 foot storm surge, showing the areas in blue projected to be underwater. My house is in one of those areas underwater with just a 3 foot storm surge. Remind you the Jersey shore is under a hurricane advisory that accompanies a warning of a 3 to 6 foot storm surge. blog.alexanderhiggins.com

  • So we are at the starting point. If the water level drop has occurred in a single day, then an enormous amount has been lost somewhere, given the size of the lake.

"At 1610 EDT on August 25, 2011 the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality was notified of an oil spill that occurred at 1900 EDT on August 24, 2011. The spill was approximately 150 gallons to the gravel outside the North Anna Unit 2 Turbine Building. The event occurred while purging CO2 from the Unit 2 Main Generator with air. Standing oil from the gravel was pumped to barrels and oil soaks were applied to the remaining oil. Clean up of the gravel areas continued."

The NRC Resident Inspector has been notified in addition to the state and local authorities."

  • Hokkaido Elec. Power Co. to probe e-mail deception

Hokkaido Electric Power Company admits that it urged employees to attend a symposium and express views in support of one of its nuclear energy projects.

Officials from the utility, which covers Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, held a news conference on Friday about the 2008 symposium.

The move comes after 2 other utilities in Japan admitted using similar forums to manipulate public opinion in favor of their nuclear projects.

The symposium in Hokkaido was about a project involving plutonium-uranium oxide, or MOX, fuel at the Tomari nuclear power plant. The meeting was sponsored by the Hokkaido prefectural government and local governments of municipalities hosting the power plant.
The utility said its public relations department sent out e-mails to nuclear power-related offices asking them to have as many people as possible attend the symposium and speak in favor of the MOX project.

The company said it takes the case seriously, and that it will investigate how the public relations department came to take such action. It will also look into how many employees actually attended the symposium and the possible impact of any statements they made.

  • Ozawa to support Kaieda in DPJ leadership race

Japan's main governing Democratic Party will kick off leadership election activities on Saturday to choose the successor to Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

Former party president Ichiro Ozawa is supporting economy minister Banri Kaieda in the election.

Ozawa heads the Democratic Party's largest faction. He told his group's 90 lawmakers on Friday he favors Kaieda, saying that Democrats who support different policies from those of the Kan government should unite under him.

Former foreign minister Seiji Maehara is considered as the frontrunner.
Both men are at odds because Maehara defends the party's decision to suspend Ozawa's membership over a political funds scandal.

Other candidates include Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda, agriculture minister Michihiko Kano and former transport minister Sumio Mabuchi.

Voting will be held on Monday. The new leader is most likely to become Japan's next prime minister to replace Kan, who has announced his resignation.

  • Kaieda emerges as leading contender for new PM with Ozawa's support

    TOKYO, Aug. 27, Kyodo

Industry minister Banri Kaieda emerged Friday as the leading contender in the ruling Democratic Party of Japan's presidential election, with DPJ kingpin Ichiro Ozawa backing him to create a new government that would not follow the policies of Ozawa's major political rival Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

Monday's election, in which 398 party lawmakers are set to vote, is likely to boil down to a battle between Kaieda, 62, supported by the largest intraparty faction led by Ozawa, and former Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara, 49, who enjoys high public support.

Former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, a close ally of Ozawa, will also back Kaieda, an aide of Hatoyama said. About 50 lawmakers, including Kaieda, are affiliated with Hatoyama's group, while nearly 140 DPJ parliamentarians, who are critical of Kan's policies, belong to Ozawa's group. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Radioactive cesium from Fukushima was 168 times more than A-bomb

    TOKYO, Aug. 26, Kyodo

The amount of radioactive cesium-137 released from the crippled nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant was 168 times more than that from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in the closing days of World War II in 1945, the Japanese government's nuclear safety agency said Friday.

A total of 15,000 terabecquerels of radioactive cesium-137 is estimated to have been released into the external environment due to the nuclear crisis, raising concerns over continuing impact as the element's half-life is known to be about 30 years.

  • Melanin's 'trick' for maintaining radioprotection studied
Sunbathers have long known that melanin in their skin cells provides protection from the damage caused by visible and ultraviolet light. More recent studies have shown that melanin, which is produced by multitudes of the planet's life forms, also gives some species protection from ionizing radiation. In certain microbes, in particular some organisms from near the former nuclear reactor facilities in Chernobyl, melanin has even been linked to increased growth in the presence of ionizing radiation.

Research at the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River National Laboratory, in collaboration with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has provided insights into the electrochemical mechanism that gives the complex polymer known as melanin its long-term radioprotective properties, with a goal of using that knowledge to develop materials that mimic those natural properties.

A recent article in the journal Bioelectrochemistry (Bioelectrochemistry 82 (2011) 69-73) relates how the researchers established that ionizing radiation interacts with melanin to alter its oxidation-reduction potential, resulting in electric current production.

Radiation causes damage by stripping away electrons from its target. "Over time, as melanin is bombarded with radiation and electrons are knocked away, you would expect to see the melanin become oxidized, or bleached out, and lose its ability to provide protection," said Dr. Charles Turick, Science Fellow with SRNL, "but that's not what we're seeing. Instead, the melanin continuously restores itself."

The team's research took them one step closer to understanding that self-restoration mechanism. They demonstrated that melanin can receive electrons, countering the oxidizing effects of the gamma radiation. The work showed, for the first time, that constant exposure of melanin to gamma radiation results in electric current production.

Mimicking that ability would be useful, for example, in the space industry, where satellites and other equipment are exposed to high levels of radiation for long spans of time. "Looking at materials, a constantly gamma radiation-oxidized electrode consisting in part of melanin would continuously accept electrons, thereby resulting in a current response," Turick said. "If we could understand how that works, we could keep that equipment working for a very long time." www.eurekalert.org
