Va gov declares state of emergency for quake.Fri Aug 26, 11:52 am ET

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Gov. Bob. McDonnell has declared a state of emergency for areas affected by Tuesday's earthquake that shook people from Georgia to Canada.

McDonnell said Friday in a news release that damage from the 5.8 magnitude earthquake appears to be greater than initial reports. He says the damage has been exacerbated by aftershocks.

McDonnell also says damaged structures could be weakened further by high winds from Hurricane Irene, which is approaching the East Coast.

His emergency declaration applies to all areas affected by the earthquake, including Louisa County and Culpeper. The earthquake's epicenter was in Mineral in central Virginia.

McDonnell says the emergency declaration will make state resources available to help local recovery efforts. l.yimg.com

  • @Edano , the meter is a simple volt meter that measures parallel to a resistor. The voltage at the resistor is proportional to the number of discharges in the GM tube. You switch among resistors of different ohms to change the range, simply put. The counts are converted into Sv with some formula and that conversion depends on the radionuclide. The conversion may hold for iodine-131 as well, I assume.

  • As well as noting another tremor at North Anna NPP on the 25th, it's interesting that this NRC Unusual Event declaration mentions Unit 1 is now in Cold Shutdown following the power outage but Unit 2 is in 'Hot Standby'. "The current status of North Anna, Unit 1 is Mode 5. Unit 2 is in Mode 3 in preparation for cool down.": www.nrc.gov
This and the oil leak during CO2 purging from the Main Generator (NRC event No.47198) makes me wonder if something's not quite right with Unit 2 there.
    by es 8/26/2011 10:15:12 PM

  • @es unit 2 had 4 scrams last year and was to be given extra inspections this year
    by elainekirk 8/26/2011 10:18:03 PM

  • @es Either an issue with #2, leaving it hotter to use less water or possibly some sort of back up status in case they need a power source for the area due to the hurricane? I would think both would need to be shut down and inspected further before being restarted.
    by lillymunster 8/26/2011 10:19:55 PM

  • @Edano , note the tube outputs only digital pulses from which the energy of the radiation cannot be deduced. With a sodium iodide crystal/photomultiplier tube, the voltage of the pulse is proportional to the energy of the gamma ray. You can discriminate the pulses by size and infer the radionuclide. You cannot accomplish that with a GM tube.

TEPCO Press Release - Plant Status of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (as of 10:00 am, Aug. 26): www.tepco.co.jp
"At around 11:30 am on August 25, we found spurts of liquid from the gap of debris when removal work of debris near main transformer of Unit 3. When we closely checked the spurts, we confirmed that there was damage at the oil pipeline for cooling the transformer and the liquid was the insulation oil contained in the transformer. After that, we confirmed the oil leakage stopped at 6:10 pm on the same day. The cause was assumed that an oil pipeline for cooling was damaged by accidental removal of an oil pipeline for radiator of the transformer during the removal work of debris. We will confirm conditions of the inside of oil protection walls and underground tanks."

  • THE HISTORY OF DOMINION-VIRGINIA POWER’s SEISMIC COVER-UP
Virginia Electric and Power Company (Vepco), now Dominion Energy, was at the center
of a decade-long struggle which ended in two nuclear reactors being built on top of an earthquake
fault. Vepco withheld documents and lied to federal regulators during license application
proceedings for Units 1 and 2 in 1973. Ultimately, Vepco was found guilty of lying and a coverup
in its efforts to obtain a construction license for the North Anna nuclear station near Louisa,
Virginia. Despite the deceptions, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission granted Vepco a
license but fined the company $32,000 for seven materially false statements about the geologic
fault under North Anna. Today, the evidence shows that Dominion Energy is attempting a
similar cover up in pursuit of two or more additional reactors at North Anna...

  • Earthquake Triggers Reactor-Design Review
Automatic Disconnect From the Grid Didn't Need to Occur, Experts Say, Noting Safeguards :But what's now clear is that the central Virginia plant tripped out of service when there was no real need for that to happen.

Experts believe sensitive electrical equipment at North Anna responded to high-frequency ground motion—which is a hallmark of Eastern quakes, but not of Western ones—as if it were an electrical disturbance. Nine relays designed to protect expensive transformers from damage misread that cue, temporarily cutting off the plant from the electric grid, according to Dominion's Mr. Heacock. online.wsj.com

That puts it on a direct path with Tokyo almost! Still a long way out though, everything can change at that sort of lead(time ahead) so here'pics\wp152011_11082618.gif[/IMG]

Haha, he's got competeing influences steering him, that's why he staggers like a drunk man and why met services are having a hard time with him, he is actually bulldozing a high pressure ridge to his north showing his strength doing so! Everything is now slower too, both Talas and Nanmadol have moved slower due to the lingering High pressure ridges to the north, Nanmadol narrowly missed the Philippines and is now forecast to travel the Taiwanese coastline(will post something about Nanmadol on the other page soon...)

5 candidates run for Democratic Party presidency

Five candidates are running for the presidency of Democratic Party of Japan to succeed Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

At a meeting of Democratic Party legislators on Friday, Kan announced he was stepping down following the passage of 3 key bills in the Diet.

The party will accept the candidates' official registrations on Saturday before holding an election to select the new leader on Monday. The winner is certain to become the next prime minister, as the party holds a majority in the House of Representatives.

Former Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara announced his candidacy on Tuesday. The others followed on Friday.
The 4 are Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda; Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Michihiko Kano; former land and transport minister Sumio Mabuchi; and Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Banri Kaieda.

The 5 candidates are to hold a debate at the National Press Club in Tokyo on Saturday.

Public opinion polls show Maehara in the lead. But Kaieda is backed by former Democratic Party leader Ichiro Ozawa, who heads the party's largest faction, and by former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama. Kaieda belongs to Hatoyama's faction.

Maehara has defended the party's decision to suspend Ozawa over a political funding scandal.

Noda is seeking support from all factions by emphasizing the need for fiscal reconstruction.

Kano is calling for the party to unite by putting an end to the rivalry between supporters and opponents of Ozawa.

Monday's vote will involve balloting by 398 Diet members belonging to the party. The party has suspended the membership of 9 other legislators.

  • Japanese government approves over $900,000 in funds to combat “erroneous information” about Fukushima: The crisis at Fukushima was not only a crisis for the people of Japan and the nuclear industry as a whole; it was also a public relations disaster for the Japanese government.
TEPCO, the Japanese utility company that operated Fukushima Daiichi, along with the Japanese government were consistently exposed telling blatant lies or misrepresentations of the truth.
Now, in an attempt to mitigate the public relations fallout that has ensued from their deceit of the Japanese people and those around the globe, the government is devoting roughly 70 million yen or $913,000 to combating what they bill “erroneous information” about the disaster. drleonardcoldwell.com

  • @elainekirk , I worked at REAC / TS in Oak Ridge many years ago. It is an institution dedicated to the treatment of radiation injuries and other acute radiation effects and their prevention. On rare occasions, people arrived to receive treatment. Because of the rarity of radiation accidents, only few hospitals know how to treat radiation injuries. By contrast, there are plenty of hospitals and clinics that know how to treat long-term radiation effects like cancer.
