  • Found this in Peter's IAEA document. Talking about venting holes in BWR containment? Anyone know where they might be and if they can close them in an emergency?
There are typically six ventilation hatches in the drywell that are left open during operation to allow for forced ventilation, which helps to avoid excessive local heating of the drywell.

  • I see you discovered that. I believe they are hooked to the normal HVAC of the building, and the pipe on the photo may be the outlet to the atmosphere. However, note that unit 1 , does not feature this stack. So I am still not absolutely certain.

  • I can't believe that the pcv vents are open on a regular basis, because the vessels atmosphere is supposed to be inerted with nitrogen, when the reactor operates. I recall that they are occluded with blast disks. Perhaps they would open to the building in case of a vacuum in the pcv, and via the building hook into the HVAC system.
    by Peter 9/17/2011 9:14:12 PM

  • There must be also regular valves that can be opened to vent the air out when nitrogen is filled.

  • Reactor shut down after cooling system issue. Loss of water in a system that cools the reactor at Palisades Nuclear Plant in Covert required that the plant be shutdown Friday.

  • Water leak shuts down reactor Saturday, September 17, 2011 3:43 PM COVERT -- The Palisades nuclear power plant was shut down Friday afternoon after a water leak of more than 10 gallons per minute was detected in the system that cools the plant's nuclear reactor.

The plant was shut down shortly before 3 p.m. because the leak exceeded the plant's technical specifications, spokesman Mark Savage said. The plant filed a notification of an "unusual event" with the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The likely cause of the problem is a leak on a valve in the primary cooling system, but that won't be known for certain until workers can get in and do a thorough evaluation, Savage said. www.istockanalyst.com

I was done to test the effects of fallout on the population, and Australian officials and scientists conspired with the British. Staggeringly unethical. There should be significant radiation-health data from these barbaric studies, if it's ever been released. Haven't finished watching it all.

  • @lillymunster, the Kyshtym disaster is virtually forgotten. I wonder if there was ever any research looking for it's long-term health effects.
    by Ian 9/17/2011 11:01:50 PM

  • @Ian you just read my mind! It seems there was lots of research done because the workers were falling ill due to the lack of safety and lack of complete knowledge at the time in the USSR. Then the people exposed during the explosion were another study group. The horrible things the USSR did to people ended up creating a detailed body of evidence. They wouldn't warn the public, but later evacuated 10,000 of course then they bothered to track illnesses. www.globalsecurity.org

  • If we can now find Kyshtym medical data it might fill in some gaps of knowledge but with the caveat that it was 1950's medicine and science.

  • Tohoku autumn delicacies go uneaten / Curbs on produce shipments, radiation fears dry up normally busy season . The ongoing crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant has affected this year's autumn delicacies in Fukushima Prefecture, with a number of events canceled and few visitors to farm stands.
The prefecture's annual matsutake mushroom-hunting event for tourists has been canceled. At some farm stands set up to sell pears, the prefecture's specialty, the level of radioactive substances is indicated on the product.
Farmers have been trying to gain consumers' confidence in their products amid fears of radioactive contamination. Some rice farmers asked private institutes to measure the amount of radiation in their crops.
After radioactive cesium exceeding the government-set provisional limit of 500 becquerels per kilogram was detected in some wild mushrooms, the shipment of wild mushrooms was banned in 43 municipalities. www.yomiuri.co.jp
