  • Looking at Edano's image of the control rods in the pedestal. I know painting things underneath the reactor is probably not easy or a priority but the rust on some parts is pretty bad. We are letting plants like this run another 20 years? What would that pipe likely be? I am assuming hydraulics for the control rods? Could it be something else?

  • Good morning last night I was thinking about the quake damage shown in the latest batch of tepco pics on units 5 and 6. By the way, the jack that moved looks like the typical five-year fix the Music City Handyman afford you under the bathroom floor when the tub starts visibly sinking; that is not a repair! I thought of comparing visible quake effects at North Anna and the tepco reactors and dug up four pics in which the visible effects look qualitatively similar. That made me wonder how actual ground motion at the two sites compares. i1214.photobucket.com i1214.photobucket.com i1214.photobucket.com i1214.photobucket.com

  • @Peter frightening
    by elainekirk 9/25/2011 1:45:25 PM

  • The pics document two essential effects: concrete splintering in the turbine buildings and shifting of heavy items like the dry casks at North Anna and the contraption that is supported by this jack Fukushima.
    by Peter 9/25/2011 1:46:24 PM

  • @Peter I didn't know we had N anna pictures. The concrete foot in that picture, there was lots of discussion in the NRC meeting about these things. Dominion said it was superficial but one of the NRC technical people started bringing up the idea of internal concrete damage and that things like this and the bolts involved should be internally inspected. I think they do it by xray?
    by lillymunster 9/25/2011 1:53:38 PM

  • @lillymunster I cannot find it but I am sure I saw it in japanese first ? translate.google.com
    by elainekirk 9/25/2011 2:00:30 PM

  • lilly, in essence that is what I am wondering about. In that meeting on NOrth Anna, one NRC gentleman questioned the Dominion people whether they had learned anything from the KK incident related to the NCO quake. I checked, that was another huge quake in Japan which triggered seismic scrams of all operating reactors at the KK plant. In addition to visible damage tepco found in walkdowns and visual inspections, more sophisticated methods uncoverd what they call "hidden" damage to systems, structures and components important to safety. And in the North Anna case, Dominion is apparently attempting to squeeze by with mainly visual inspections.
    by Peter 9/25/2011 2:00:46 PM

  • @Peter yes. Dominion's take was we looked at everything in great detail and it looks fine now let us restart. NRC was questioning if that is sufficient. They need to internally inspect the concrete and support structures.
    by lillymunster 9/25/2011 2:03:23 PM

  • We should keep an eye out for reports of hidden damage to vital reactor parts at Fukushima 1 Units 5 and 6 detected with ultrasound and x-ray methods etc.

  • Govt tells tepco to cut cost more www.foxbusiness.com The salaries at Tepco have already been cut 20% for regular workers, 50% for executives, and 100% for the chairman and president. The cuts are expected to be kept in place as part of the restructuring.

  • More trouble at Calhoun www.omaha.com
    by lillymunster 9/25/2011 2:36:59 PM

  • @elainekirk neither seem too hard to do. I think it is more of TEPCO's no maintenance mentality. Anything they are not forced to do costs money. People have already said they wouldn't maintain anything and we have seen it in the photos and all the fraud in testing
    by lillymunster 9/25/2011 2:38:26 PM

  • @lillymunster tepco are merely an example arent they it would be reassuring to think they were the exception but they ain't
    by elainekirk 9/25/2011 2:38:49 PM

  • @dean www.tepco.co.jp quick looks tells me it is summary of pictures of the #2 Dani plant (the one that didn't blow up) before and after shots with junk strewn about and flooded floors and furniture fallen down vs cleaned up version. Good shot of generator installation and other equipment. These guys look like they were pretty busy cleaning up
    by artnuke 9/25/2011 2:43:55 PM

  • yes, that is a pipe hung from the doorjamb with baling wire and kitty tape - somebody needs to blow up and circle those things. I had to look around a bit to notice that. Any US reactors fixed like that? How common is this at other japanese reactors? Must be a recent fix, can't imagine it's been like that since 1971.
    by artnuke 9/25/2011 2:48:00 PM

  • @artnuke I am going to do that later today and probably post to the group site tomorrow (the duct tape and bailing wire)

@Elaine, sadly, TEPCO's actions may be the rule to an extent. Hamaoka has some rather epic failures of old equipment.

The article on Ft. Calhoun is just horrible, the union rep even admits management and operations there are a mess. I think it is time to whip out the photo set of the graffiti in the plant and all the other lax work images I found on Calhoun.
    by lillymunster 9/25/2011 2:50:21 PM

  • but the situation must have been like close to hell. no electricity, no lights, no communication, a tsunami, heat, three explosions and no data, 9 reactors and 10 spent fuel pools out of control. how can you ever try to train such an emergency ? ---- Well, message to rest of world --- START TRAINING and while you're at it, every US city and state needs to plan for what happens if / when the same thing happens over here. Hopefully we only get one every 100 years, but you never know which of those years it is or where it will be. If you ask me, I'd say it be better to NOT kick everybody into a shelter immediately if it's not enough radiation to make you sick right away if it's just a "might get cancer but we can't show it's actually harmed anybody yet unless you consult Busby" issue but people need to start thinking about the issue beyond a few armchair nuclear scientists on this boardl.
    by artnuke 9/25/2011 2:56:38 PM

  • Hard to tell if that is steel pipe painted white or pvc pipe. PVC pipe is barely good enough for bathroom plumbing, there's no place for it in a NPP? right???
    by artnuke 9/25/2011 3:21:53 PM

  • now that japan has gone bonkers over food radiation safety limits and measurement, what are odds anybody in the USDA or state level agencies have even held 1 meeting about reviewing how this would be handled over here? How many radiation dectectors do USDA inspectors have on hand to inspect beef? Do we have ANY import controls that monitors radiation on food from Asia??
    by artnuke 9/25/2011 3:27:08 PM

  • @artnuke they effectively buried the problem via the media and telling everyone there is no problem because it is just like flying in a plane.

  • @lillymunster it has no data :) their first pdf of the day was a map showing the expanded test area the third pdf was a sheet saying no testing had been done. And we are only in Septenmber come the real autumn/winter there is even less likelyhood of testing
