  • @Edano there was never really talk about evacuation from the govt or media. I remember people seeing high-ish levels and wondering when they were going to evacuate. This was when people were wondering t if it should be a 50mile zone per the US.

I love it how each Japanese article I read on a research plan openly states that the goal of the "study" will be to bring public calm, or in this case to increase sale of (contaminated) fish.

  • We received the instruction document*1 titled "Submission request for the
report on the Accident Operation Manuals of Units 1 to 3 at Fukushima
Daiichi Nuclear Power Station" from the Nuclear and Industrial Safety
Agency (NISA) of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
    (Previously announced on September 27)

Based on the instructions, yesterday we submitted a report to NISA on the
Accident Operation Manuals of Unit 1 at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power
    Station.

In addition, yesterday we also received an instruction document*2 from NISA
titled "Response based on the report on the Accident Operation Manuals of
Unit 1 at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station".

Per the instructions, we will organize materials regarding information
contained in the Accident Operations Manual that may be detrimental to
safety if publicly released and report them to NISA.

    END

    *1 Instruction document
Submission request for the report on the accident operation manuals of
Units 1 to 3 at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station
    (September 26, 2011, NISA)

    *2 Instruction document
Response based on the report on the accident operation manuals of Unit 1
at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station
    (September 27, 2011, NISA)

We have provided a Japanese press release version of the instruction
document received from NISA. However, at this time we have reserved the
right not to provide an English version due to potential misunderstandings
that may arise from an inaccurate rendering of the original Japanese text.
We may provide the English translation that NISA releases in our press
releases. However, in principle we would advise you to visit the NISA
website for timely and accurate information. www.tepco.co.jp

  • Village warns residents over TEPCO redress claims

A village in Fukushima Prefecture is warning residents to be wary of signing a compensation document from Tokyo Electric Power Company for damage caused by the nuclear plant accident.

The document says that residents must renounce their right to file objections after they have received payments.

Iitate Village, located near the nuclear plant, is criticizing TEPCO for asking applicants to sign the document before the damage can be fully assessed.

Many residents have evacuated the area because of high levels of radioactivity released from the plant.

Village officials say it doesn't make sense for TEPCO to ask for signatures now.

A written warning will be distributed to all its 2,500 households.

The warning states that additional requests for redress will probably not be accepted.

  • @Peter, some counter points on calcium (re pinup above). You say if the pill is 10mg we'd have to take 52 pills per day. But most calcium pills are 500mg, so there's fifty 10mg pills in one, no big deal. And the study I cited www.jstor.org found: "Both stable strontium and stable calcium increased the urinary excretion of radiostrontium." Now that was by infusion, not sure of comparable ingestion to reach the same level. But provided blood levels of calcium immediately increase strontium excretion, this method of protection doesn't seem obviously impossible.
    by Ian 9/28/2011 10:10:00 AM

  • @Ian , point well taken. I was looking for a pill bottle comparable to the one posted for Busby's pills. The shown one seemed small for 500 mg pills. I shall ruminate it a bit more. Cheers!
    by Peter 9/28/2011 10:41:23 AM

  • @Edano oh that stinks (the TEPCO signature clause). That is a very typical insurance company tactic to get an injured party to sign away their rights prematurely. At least in the US. I would hope the lawyers in Japan jump in before people start signing those.
    by lillymunster 9/28/2011 10:47:29 AM

  • @lillymunster yeah :( they try it, but i guess it won't be valid.
    by Edano 9/28/2011 10:51:44 AM

  • Ian, just after a quick glance on the abstract of the study you cite. Note that stable calcium was less effective in removing radioactive strontium than stable strontium, and the authors report that others have shown calcium to be ineffective in animals. Interestingly, the authors administered radioactive strontium to the study subjects. Though they used trace amounts, I doubt that an IRB would approve this study in our time.
