  • @Peter i just thought about cockroaches with dosimeters. or cameras.
    by Edano 10/9/2011 7:10:28 PM

  • @Edano , the hissing kind from Africa come to mind. They are huge, are known to be quite radiation resistant, plus they make good pets, :)

  • @Liz Having taken legal advice in the late 1950’s to the effect that the then current policy wording would - as a matter of course - include damage arising from radioactive contamination in the majority of classes, and cognisant that such contamination could result in total policy limits being paid under every contract in an affected area, insurers resolved to protect their solvency by the exclusion of radioactive contamination from those classes where the risk was considered uninsurable www.nuclearpools.com

  • I just did a picture search on "nuclear deformities". Dont do it if you are squimish. But they have just about everything from cleft jaw to limbs missing. What must the mother feel when she sees that baby being born. I would have to be put into the psych ward!

  • a while back i read a post from @Bo he posted a picture from a "Zyclops" A fetus in a jar with just one eye. He said that it was the only one he ever saw. I just came across another one. The author said it was caused from depleted uranium. Caution! Its heavy stuff. stgvisie.home.xs4all.nl

  • @Liz /i think mothers accept their children quite readily but the fear of rejection from others obviously comes into play. When I had my middle daughter a mum had a child with facial disfigurement and she bonded beautifully they were a joy to see but she told me how she feared others reaction and other mums on the ward did avoid the family very sad.
    by elainekirk 10/9/2011 7:51:33 PM

  • Yes it is sad. @elainekirk I gotto go. Have to get up early tomorrow. G`nite!

  • @lilly - hello & 2 all around :)
you noted below that you miss 'fresher' data from the Chernobyl incident, so the following is likely unknown here. A russian publication 2007 with many unreleased documents, translated 2009:

Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment
(a translation of a 2007 Russian publication by Alexey V. Yablokov...)

"The book presents an analysis of scientific literature and concludes that medical records between 1986, the year of the Chernobyl disaster, and 2004 ..."

  • You guys probably noticed that the article Edano posted www3.nhk.or.jp has Tepco specifically addressing the issue of a lack of steam in the new footage as evidence of the core cooling. This is remarkable given our discussion of the contrary regarding the Sept 24 videos showing steam as evidence
    by Ian 10/9/2011 9:44:17 PM

  • (cont) ... of the there being boiling water somewhere in the containment. It's like the new videos and statements where intended to specifically counter the arguments we've made here. The counter to their new releases is that the new Unit-3 footage does not show the steaming location and thus does not show lessened steam from the Sept 24 video. And the Unit 2 video could simply be when it was so warm outside that the steam wasn't visible.
    by Ian 10/9/2011 9:47:02 PM

  • What matters is that the Sept 24 videos showed steam at the same time Tecpo said the cores where below 100˚C and thus below boiling, which means the boiling was occurring outside the reactors, which means Tepco's feeding us manure with the claim that all the corium is nice and cool inside the reactors.
    by Ian 10/9/2011 9:49:26 PM

  • “The people who come here are furious — furious — about what happened,” Muto said. “They have a thorn stuck in their heart. A lot of people tell me, ‘I want to go home as soon as possible. I want my life back.’ ... What can I do? Well, the best way to help is to let them vent their anger. I have to get on my knees” and apologize.

“This is the first step for us to then have a conversation about compensation.”

The compensation process itself has drawn ridicule. Beginning last month, Tepco distributed to evacuees not only the meaty application pamphlet, but also a 156-page instruction manual. Lawmakers criticized the application form as needlessly complicated; even Muto acknowledges that it’s too big. Most evacuees, Muto said, can’t finish the application by themselves. They often need at least two hours of consultation at one of the four Tepco assistance centers in Fukushima. www.washingtonpost.com

  • got any googling needs doing? I am suffering google withdrawal symptoms
    by elainekirk 10/9/2011 11:07:37 PM

  • @elainekirk @lillymunster , and they could suppress steam for a "Look mom, no steam!" showing by flooding the rectors with an unusually large amount of cool water than shoot the video right then, before it evaporates lower. Deeper water would emit far less steam and wouldn't for some time after it's quickly added to a very-deep level.
I had a feeling someone at Tepco would be upset when they realized the Sept 24 videos showed steam... D'oh! They've gotta fire Homer sooner or later!
    by Ian 10/9/2011 11:10:07 PM

  • @Ian steam doesnt form until it meets cooler air I should imagine the draw would be pretty strong so steam at that level?
    by elainekirk 10/9/2011 11:14:34 PM

  • ?? Why is it evident that non-boiling water or its temperature (measured in what depth?) is a sign of absence of hot-cooking activities underneath?
If I remember the lakes inside 'quiet' vulcanos: they are very cold and also release gas emissions from the magmatic prozess below.

I think the molten stuff behaves like lava slowly floating downwards while building a skin by the time. Besides - all the downwashed rubble and particles will congest all holes and cracks - and build a kind of crust-cover.

    Steam ? - it's still visible in the night-views - doesn't this count?

  • @all Good Morning...Good Evening...Hello!
    by smoss 10/9/2011 11:29:19 PM

  • Had to reboot. The video from Saturday shows what looked like boiling surface water with no steam. It was either at a low boil or something was moving the water in the surface of the equipment pool.

  • @smoss there are a few in the library under venting and valves but I don't know if there was a list of Mark 1's.

  • @lillymunster Thanks!
    by smoss 10/9/2011 11:46:31 PM

  • @elainekirk, wonder if we could find the temps at the times of the Sept-24 released video and these new ones. But they probably don't give exact times when the videos were taken, even if we can find historic regional temps.
    by Ian 10/9/2011 11:51:19 PM

  • on organise audi has posted an article where government describe goods as

After the suspension of the construction project, the Koriyama company asked an inspection firm to measure the girders' radiation level, and confirmed they were lower than the International Commission on Radiological Protection's annual limit for permissible exposure.
what do they mean by that??
    by elainekirk 10/9/2011 11:51:33 PM
