  • Radioactive soil to be disposed of 30 yrs after interim storage

    TOKYO, Oct. 29, Kyodo

The Japanese government said Saturday it will seek the final disposal of soil and other waste contaminated with radioactive substances emitted from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant within 30 years after they are collected in a storage facility in Fukushima Prefecture.

What the government calls an ''interim'' storage facility should be in use within around three years, with an estimated storage capacity of 15 million to 28 million cubic meters and a total site area of about 3 to 5 square kilometers.

The government's basic idea on the facility and a related road map were unveiled during talks between nuclear disaster minister Goshi Hosono and Fukushima Gov. Yuhei Sato in Fukushima Prefecture, home to the nuclear power plant that was devastated by the March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami. english.kyodonews.jp

  • 80 volunteers gather in Fukushima for decontamination works

    FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Oct. 29, Kyodo

Around 80 volunteer workers from all over Japan gathered Saturday in the city of Fukushima to decontaminate radioactive materials discharged from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The municipal government distributed gloves, masks and dosimeters to them before starting the decontamination work, including weeding and picking up fallen leaves.

It has secured around 240 volunteer workers so it can conduct the decontamination works every weekend in highly contaminated areas of the city, it said. english.kyodonews.jp

  • FEATURE: Japanese food wins back Hong Kong hearts after nuclear fears abate

    By Janice Tang
    HONG KONG, Oct. 29, Kyodo

After deserting their favorite Japanese restaurants for several months following the March nuclear accident in Japan, Hong Kong people have gradually rekindled their special love for Japanese food.

From high-end sushi bars to casual ramen noodle shops, some 700 Japanese restaurants dot the city. Hong Kong, with a population of just about 7 million, has been the world's largest importer of Japanese food products for four consecutive years through 2010.

But in the immediate aftermath of Japan's nuclear crisis, many of these restaurants were dealt a harsh blow as Hong Kong diners worried about radiation contamination in Japanese food. Some eateries reported business plummeting by up to 80 percent and a number of them were forced to close down, local food industry officials said. english.kyodonews.jp

Another radioactive spot not related to Fukushima

Alarm has been voiced by residents of Setagaya Ward in Tokyo who live near highly radioactive spots that are not related to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima.

The science ministry carried out a close check in response to a report from local residents about a highly radioactive spot at the parking lot of a supermarket in Hachimanyama, Setagaya.

The ministry reported detecting radiation of up to 170 microsieverts per hour at a height of 1 meter above the ground. It says the level of radiation was detected at 2 spots, one at the parking lot covered with asphalt and the other at a sidewalk.

The ministry suspects radioactive material underneath the asphalt caused the reading, but that it is unrelated to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima.

The ministry says it will have the asphalt torn off to determine the material and then remove it.

While officials from the science ministry were measuring the level of radiation in the area on Friday, a woman passer-by said it worries her because her child goes to a junior high school nearby. She said she wants to get accurate information as soon as possible.

Two weeks ago, radiation of up to 2.707 microsieverts per hour was observed at another spot in Setagaya Ward. Officials determined the source of radiation to be jars contained in a wooden box under the floor of a vacant house. Analysis showed the radioactive material may be radium 226, which is used for cancer treatment and fluorescent paint.

  • @ Edano, he said the surgery will be best to go then after 6 weeks I will return as he does want follow up on the fact that I have had lower energy levels. He looked over every thing and was thorough, said to watch for any chest pressure etc.
    by dean 10/29/2011 11:50:17 AM

  • he said after angio's you have to take a blood medicine that would have postponed the knee surgery. both doctors have talked and agree on path forward..

    by dean 10/29/2011 11:52:03 AM

  • @dean it's true with the medis, you have to take aspirin and clopidogrel to make the blood thinner, but i personally would see no risk for the knee surgery. but if the heart ischaemy is minor, it can wait.

  • @dean after an angioplasty, the doctor will probably tell you to take the medicine for 3 or 6 months, but i recommend strongly to take it for the rest of your life. i followed the advice once - and bang - got a restenosis. so my hint is talk with your doctor about lifetime blood thinning. it is better.
