  • 79% of air fallout landed on ocean. So how do we then determine total releases so air released radiation doesn't get counted twice? www.forbes.com

  • unit #4 condensate tank
    2006
(Content of the Report from Tokyo Electric Power Company)
The Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Unit-4 (BWR, rated electric power; 784 MWe) had been operated at the rated power. Water of the condensate storage tank including tritium flew into the pure water make-up water system (hereafter called “the concerned system”) and about 4.7 x 1010 Bq (Becquerel) of tritium in total was released to the outside of the controlled area (the atmosphere and the surrounding environment). The exhaust to the atmosphere was released not through the waste processing facility with uncontrolled condition as steam of the auxiliary boiler whose source is water of the concerned system.
Radiation dose of the general public exposed by this event was 2.8 x 10-7 milli sievert/year and was about one 3.5 millionth of the dose limit (1 milli sievert/year) of the legislation.
There was no radiological impact to the environment.
The cause investigation and the countermeasures to prevent their reoccurrence will be conducted from now on, and the results will be reported to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. www2.jnes.go.jp

  • As to the tanks, I learned that the experts are not worried about the tanks and their concrete foundations themselves in a quake. They worry about soil subsidence and liquifaction under them.

  • Does anyone know if we have these pretty pictures ? www.kantei.go.jp
    by elainekirk 10/29/2011 9:28:37 PM

  • @Peter there is some missing earth below them. I can't tell if it sunk, shifted etc but there is the wavy ground all around them. So there was some soil changes. I have to wonder about the piping going through all those buildings to the reactor. Lots of places to break.
    by lillymunster 10/29/2011 9:32:28 PM

  • @elainekirk I have not seen those yet. There is also a status sspreadsheet of ECCS system components. Going to grab all the diagrams out of that, save them with the rest of today's graphics and put them in the library.

  • @elainekirk It has locations of equipment too! It has OP levels on many things including the RPV equipment - this is just chuck full of goodies. I need to kick my brain into high gear for a few hours and see what I can do with all these bits and pieces I have and this new stuff. I think I could almost make some sort of interactive model.

  • @lillymunster , telling from Elaines seismic margin assessment doc, it does not look like the tanks buckled, but they may have shifted and sunk on one side or another.

They also cite where those negative water levels actually are in reference to the location in the RPV.

  • At 2:55 on March 12, it was confirmed that water was continually being injected to the

reactor through the RCIC. After 2:55 on the same day, as it was confirmed that the water level

of the condensate storage tank had decreased, the RCIC water source was switched from the

condensate storage tank to the S/C in order to maintain the water level of the condensate

storage tank and to prevent the S/C water level from increasing, and water injection was

    continued. docs.google.com

  • 2008 ~
    1. Contents of the report submitted by Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc.
As part of a regular inspection of Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station Unit 1, on March 6 the power company started checking the condensate tank installed outdoors to see if it was becoming corrosive, as was the case with some other power plants. Today, March 17, the company found that the tank was thinner than the technically required thickness (3.0 mm) at one point (2.89 mm thick). As the tank fails to satisfy the required function, the company decided that the issue should be reported to NISA under Article 62.3 of the Law on the Regulation of Nuclear Source Material, Nuclear Fuel Material and Reactors (“Nuclear Reactor Regulation Law”).
No radioactive impact outside the plant will be caused by this event.
