  • @Edano look at the top right of unit 4 in the video. Does it look like steam rolling up and out?

  • From the NRC report:

    PRIORITY DETERMINATION
LWR spent fuel storage pools do not differ greatly. None are equipped with drains; a portable pump must be brought in when it is desired to empty the pool. The cooling systems are provided with anti-siphoning devices (check valves and/or anti-siphoning holes) so that pipe breaks in the cooling system will not drain the pool. All are seismic Category I. One difference does exist: PWR pools are generally below grade (often on bedrock) while BWR pools are considerably above grade. Thus, even a hole in the bottom of the pool will not rapidly drain a PWR pool. This priority determination, therefore, is concentrated on a BWR pool because of its (somewhat) greater vulnerability.

Unless something in the old piping system broke or failed considerably last night I would guess there is a crack somewhere.

  • @lillymunster, I'm reading that as reassuring that there's not an impending catastrophe, provided the leak is only in the auxiliary system.
    by Ian 1/1/2012 10:39:14 PM

  • @Ian the skimmer tank can't drain the SFP. This is good news. The portion that concerns me slightly is that a crack is the most likely source of the skimmer losing water. The structural integrity of the pool walls is an admitted concern at unit 4. I hope that any crack isn't leading to worse failures.
    by lillymunster 1/1/2012 10:44:03 PM

  • @lillymunster, the new year started off with an immediate reminder that we're still at the mercy of Mother Nature!
    by Ian 1/1/2012 11:02:37 PM

  • @lillymunster, you'd think even one of the crane might have moved over to Unit 4 to get a camera on the scene, but no www.youtube.com
    by Ian 1/1/2012 11:03:56 PM

  • I read a worker's comment here the other day that if the earthquake/tsunami last March had happened only one week later, Unit 4's rpv would have been emptied of water for the shroud replacement, the gates between the pool and the rpv would have been bust open by the hydrogen exposions, and all water would have gone from the pool into the rpv. The stored fuel would have burned within a hour.

  • EMERGENCY MAIL from TEPCO to Mass media about Reactor 4.
'Notice from Tepco' "For mass media
This mail is sent to people who registered to the service to receive messages late in the night / early in the morning.

17:30 1/1/2012 , Tepco employee found the water level was decreasing faster than usual in the tank to keep the overflowed water from spent fuel pool of reactor4. The water level is decreased naturally because of water evaporation , as it used to take 3 hours to be decreased by 50mm (17mm / h),but from 2PM to 5PM today ,it was decreased by 240mm within 3 hours.(80mm / h). Now we still have not found the leakage point but there is no water leakage found in radioactive waste processing building and outside of the buildings ,where the water cooling system is located. We are going to detect the leakage point. At 5PM ,1/1/2012 ,the temperature of spent fuel pool is 23℃,water cooling system is functioning. There is no change in the water level of the spent fuel pool. Soon as we are prepared ,we will put additional water to the tank and keep watching. You can’t reply to this email. fukushima-diary.com

    • Currently, the Dearimasu I have been tested in the field intended for leaks, leaks in around the outside of the reactor building and the floor waste treatment building are equipped with cooling system circulating the spent fuel pool for the use of Unit 4 has been confirmed Orimasen it. And checking the integrity of the pipe connecting the reactor building, continue to conduct site surveys, we are investigating the cause.

(※) tank has been set up to receive the overflow water from the spent fuel pool. Spent fuel pool water is usually to remove the impurities and water cooling of the fuel assembly, clearance will be overflow into the surge tank, and then filtered through your heat exchanger, and back again to the spent fuel pool The.

Posted by Mochizuki on September 14th, 2011 This has not been announced by JP gov as always,

but NHK seems to have caught the explosion scene.(not broadcast it.)

It has been believed that 4th reactor is severely damaged for some reason, but nobody has seen any explosion.

As long as we see this video,it was a major explosion.
