  • Looking at the post from earlier about unit 4. The concrete block put in under the spent fuel pool could add to the horizontal swaying or cause some odd acceleration behavior. The removal of the upper wall section probably won't matter because what was removed wasn't supporting anything. That building is so beat up and weakened in so many places it is a big concern. There is fuel they might be able to remove quicker if they could speed things up. IIRC there is a large number of assemblies so some are likely to be old enough to remove. Less fuel means less weight and less to burn if it would ever catch fire again.

  • @lillymunster, well said and that underscores my growing exasperation that the cranes have sat idle for about a whole week, as if there was nothing very important to attend to.

    by lillymunster 1/3/2012 1:37:22 AM

  • @Ian they have no concrete plan. They have to come up with a way to lower casks and move fuel into the casks. The current cranes swing around too much so they will have to rig something. I doubt they can use the refueling crane to load fuel. It is damaged plus heavy, moving it around could damage the building.

MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF COMPLEXITY AND AMBIGUITY IN DECISION MAKING Acquisition of central station facilities, particularly nuclear, makes long-term commitments in exactly the wrong way for the current decision making environment. It commits to assets that have high risk (e.g. fossil fuel facilities) or create large exposure to uncertainty (large size, high capital cost, or long lead times) with technologies that have vague long-term prospects (unstable resource availability and poorly understood environmental impacts). As a result, it is no longer acceptable for the bias in favor of large central station facilities to dominate resource planning. www.vermontlaw.edu

The background was 0.227 microSv/h. It picked up around by 0.53 microSv/h immediate on the package.

This suggests the sea contamination has spread to not only Pacific ocean but also the Korean / Japanese sea.

  • that blowout panel report says that panels got loose in an earthquake at another plant. That blew the negative pressure seal, reports are that nuclear agency told everybody to weld them shut because they were a nuisance. Since they were put in for tornadoes, it does seem like such a bad idea at the time. They are not designed to withstand hydrogen explosions anyway, any other reports they were thinking of popping them open to prevent an explosion?
