  • This is from a posted comment in regards to the breaking news article 'whistle-blower talks..containment vessel is melting like honeycomb' in Fukushima Diary: "...confirms that China Syndrome has begun in reactor 1. They need to rush in and get as much of the melting waste out before it reaches the sand under the reactor. Those melted pieces of waste are blinking with radiation due to uranium fusing to steel. If the core pieces hit the sand while at high temperatures it could cause more gasses to begin reacting. TEPCO denied China Syndrome for the past 10 months and now there is no denying that it is happening..." So, does this 'theory' make sense ?

  • NORTH ANNA NUKE PLANT SHUT DOWN.... today...Nuclear Event in USA on Tuesday, 03 January, 2012 at 18:14 (06:14 PM) UTC.
    Description
A leak that forced the North Anna nuclear power plant in Central Virginia to temporarily shut down has been fixed. A spokesman for the Nuclear Regulator Commission says a steam line, which leads to a valve that leads to a reactor turbine, sprung a leak Monday. The plant operated at about 4 percent capacity while repairs were made and started powering back up early Tuesday. The NRC spokesman says there was no radiation leak. It is the second partial shutdown since the August 5.8 magnitude earthquake that knocked both reactors off-line and raised concerns about the plant's safety. But the NRC spokesman says there's no evidence right now that this latest incident had anything to do with quake damage. North Anna is located in Louisa County about 90 miles from Washington. It has operated since the 1970s. During the August earthquake, there was some damage to buildings at the site but no off-site radiation leak. The reactors were restarted in November after an investigation found no functional damage. hisz.rsoe.hu

    by M.I.A. 1/3/2012 7:07:48 PM

  • @MaryW No immediate harm, most radiation related illnesses have a lag between exposure and illness or death. So "immediate" means you won't drop dead right now but people might start dieing in 5-10 years.. total legalize written by lawyers.

  • Here is the latest UPDATE: The Daily Mail writes today "Is a super-volcano just 390 miles from London about to erupt?", suggesting that the Laacher See volcano in Western Germany could "erupt any time" and produce a large eruption such as the devastating (but still moderate, not super-volcano at all) Plinian eruption 11,900 years ago. Unfortunately, what the Daily Mail writes, is more dark fantasy than anything else. There is no scientific background to assume that an eruption in a foreseeable future could be in the making in this area. To read more and why, please have a look at the brilliant post about it on Dr. Erik Klemetti's Eruptions Blog. hisz.rsoe.hu

  • Nuclear Event in United Kingdom on Tuesday, 03 January, 2012 at 18:13 (06:13 PM) UTC.
    Description
EDF Energy reduced power output at its two Hunterston nuclear reactors in Scotland on Tuesday, after the grid operator moved to better manage electricity distribution amid severe power cuts following heavy storms, a spokesman said. "We have reduced the load on both units at Hunterston B so that the transmission and distribution systems can manage," he said. The two nuclear reactors, with a maximum output capacity of 500 and 460 megawatts (MW) respectively, were running at around 350 MW on Tuesday afternoon, National Grid data showed. Network operator National Grid manages Britain's electricity grid balance and sometimes requests plant operators cut output to manage network constraints. On Tuesday, more than 100,000 homes were cut from the power network as heavy storms knocked out transmission cables.

  • nevertheless, i recently read some articles about (former) eruptions in germany, the rhine valley saw a lot of them in ancient times, and the vulcanos in Rhön mountains and Vogesen are still hot spots. there is a lot of research on that theme here lately, but really no acute danger.
    by Edano 1/3/2012 7:25:29 PM
