  • @Pedro Jesus they call those the Honda Fit in the US. I am hoping they have the wagon version here about the time my VW is due for a trade in.

Have you tried re-adding your avatar? I had it happen to my account once.
    by lillymunster 1/5/2012 4:23:15 AM

  • @lillymunster As in re-adding it on Facebook? I log in the scribble through Facebook. I changed the avatar recently, as you can see by my posted pinned up on this page, but a few days later it stopped showing up here when I enter info. I believe it coincided with when I first logged in as a moderator.

  • @lillymunster But I'm not logged in as a mod now. I'm logged in through Facebook... :s I'll try anyway.

  • I was watching Dr Patterson's interview Ian posted. Although very well presented, it is biased toward anti-nuclear. He only talks about the bad health impact of nuclear power and never mentions the good impact (less CO2 in the atmosphere or less heavy particles in suspension from coal power, for example). I wonder if he is aware of the millions of people who die from pollution related deceases, cancer included around the world every year (according to WHO).

  • @lillymunster I found out the problem with the avatar. When I connect my Facebook account to my scribble client account then the avatar that shows here is the scribble account's (I have none there). I have dissociated my Facebook account now, so my avatar is back. I will experimenting with the avatar though, so don't be surprised if you see me posting with different avatars in the coming days.

  • hi, scribblers. l'il bump with a big hooray! NEW YORK, New York, January 4, 2012 (ENS) - The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has rejected a bid by Entergy, owner and operator of the Indian Point nuclear power plant on the Hudson River, to reverse an order to complete legally-required analyses of the facility's severe accident mitigation measures before it can be relicensed.

  • @Pedro Jesus Hi, Pedro! Yes, it's the only responsible thing to do. I know you are interested in nuke technology and have an open mind. I just was read this review of a book on integral fast reactors. I don't know anything about them, but I aim to find out what I can. You may find this intriguing. I'm going to research what I can- but not tonight. It's late here and I've got to get up early! So I'll say bom dia (is that right?) to you and leave you the link. :-) bravenewclimate.com

  • @M.I.A. Muito obrigado e boa noite. It's early morning on this side of the globe. I'm interested in any kind of energetic solution, not particularly in nuclear. I'm going to study your link. =)

  • "Fiat Increases Ownership in Chrysler to 58.5%" (Jeff Bennet and Gilles Castonguay) online.wsj.com (requires subscription ro read the whole article)

"Fiat SpA increased its ownership stake in Chrysler Group LLC to 58.5% from 53.5% on a fully diluted basis after fulfilling the last of its U.S. federally mandated requirements calling for the Italian auto maker to help Chrysler produce a car in America that gets 40 miles per gallon"

US auto makers are still miles away from European concerning fuel efficiency; to give a fair example, German BMW sells sports car with better mileage than what Chrysler is trying to develop: 325d Coupe, 640d Coupe and Cabrio or even the 535d sedan all over 300HP and 155 mph (without electronic limitation). I can't understand why these cars never make it to the US market.

  • @Ian I would think there is a typical ratio of lead 210 to cesium, stronium etc in fallout. This would be one way to determine how much of the lead could be tied to the fallout and how much would possibly be naturally occurring in the soil.

    by lillymunster 1/5/2012 12:27:35 PM

  • @lillymunster There is something very wrong with that lead-210 theory. Lead-210 is used in radiometry which suggests that human activity (such as the use of nuclear energy) would be irrelevant when compared to the natural occurring isotope. Also, lead-210 is not easily detected. Its presence and quantity is derived indirectly from the occurrence of another daughter isotope, polonium-210. I have some reservations regarding Busby's lead-210 theory.
by Pedro Jesus 1/5/2012 12:33:08 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus The results show a notable cesium amount but it isn't through the roof. I can't think of a way lead could be concentrated in amounts that are somehow worse than the cesium contamination unless you have naturally occurring lead 210
    by lillymunster 1/5/2012 12:43:14 PM

  • Radon, which eventually decays to lead, is by far a higher health concern than radioactive lead. Radioactive lead is hardly radioactive at all... it represents one of the very last stages of uranium natural decay. It's presence on Earth can be determined so precisely that it is used in radiometry to accurately date aquatic sediments.
by Pedro Jesus 1/5/2012 12:49:49 PM

  • @lillymunster And like I said, the isotope lead-210 cannot be detected directly because it is a very, very slow beta emitter.

  • @lillymunster, that level of Pb120 can't be just natural, though I think it's not a normal fallout product either.

  • Conversations on twitter that the protective iodine stockpile is all past the expiration date. Refers to Iwaki specifically. Concerns if unit 4's fuel pool falls apart it might be needed and the supply is expired.
    by lillymunster 1/5/2012 1:10:57 PM

  • @lillymunster Absolutely! Radium belongs in the uranium decay chain. I'm not sure if it decays all the way down to lead, maybe not, but some of its by-products will eventually decay to lead at some point further down the decay chain. Radon, that I mentioned before, is one of radium's daughter isotopes. Radium is the most radioactive element... according to WikiPedia, it is about 1 million times more radioactive than uranium.

  • Blei (210 Pb)

    www.uni-mainz.de

    Lead (210 Pb)

The last 100 years based on 210Pb

The lead isotope 210Pb produced by the decay of an isotope of the noble gas radon (222Rn), which was created through a decay chain of uranium and radium in the earth's crust and is released as gas into the atmosphere. There is 210Pb, which is then washed out with rain and accumulates in rainwater-fed systems. 210Pb is therefore in all young sediments of the earth's surface naturally present. The half-life is only 22 years, so it already in sediments that are only 100 years old, can no longer be detected. The sediments from the Schalkenmehrener Maar Maar Ulmener and were dated at the University of Liverpool with 210Pb by the method of Appleby (2001). An interpretation of the fluctuating 210Pb levels prior to 1950 is impossible.

  • lead 210 and polonium 210 pose a certain problem as they "naturally" contaminate drinking water. the german limit for drinking water is 0,048 mSv/a for Pb-210 and 0,042 mSv/a for Po-210. www.umwelt-online.de
the EU commission recommends 0,28 mSv/a for Pb-210 and 0,44 mSv/a for Po-210, which poses a risk for babies. this limit is controversial and under criticism at the moment.

    Santo Domingo, 05/01/2012 - (rw)
Santo Domingo - Only 55 miles west of the capital Santo Domingo at 5:35 local time, the earth quaked. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km. The shock waves in the early morning hours could be perceived by the entire island population. The Intensitätsmagnitude was not high enough to issue a tsunami warning. The people surrounding especially near the Epicentrum were surprised in their sleep by the quake and fled in panic from their homes. The Dominican earthquake safe service calls on the people to rest and predicts a number of small aftershocks during the day. www.domrep-magazin.de
