  • The Fukushima Black Box "Meanwhile, across Japan, 48 out of 54 nuclear reactors remain out of service, almost all because of safety fears. Until somebody in power seizes on the report as a call to action, its findings, especially those that reveal sheer ineptitude, suggest that the public has every reason to remain as scared as hell." www.economist.com

  • January 7, 2012 – JAPAN – In September of 2011, Tokyo Electric Power Company said they suspected there were 5 active faults near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant that could affect the crippled plant if they caused a tremor. TEPCO said in September of 2011 that geological deformations were observed for the first time at 5 faults, suggesting they are active. –ENE News

It therefore should come as no surprise that three earthquakes erupted in the Fukushima district. The FD report says, On January 5th, an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 hit Japan. The epicenter is Fukushima Nakadori, where Fukushima plants are located. It’s shallower than 10km. No information about the plant is announced yet. JNN Fukushima live camera was down immediately after the quake. The earthquake was only one of three that hit the region in cascading fashion. -Fukushima Diary theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com

  • Govt to limit life of nuclear reactors to 40 years

The Japanese government wants to pass a new law that limits the life of nuclear reactors to 40 years.

Nuclear crisis minister Goshi Hosono on Friday announced a review of nuclear safety regulations following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The proposed 40-year limit is included in new draft regulations on nuclear reactors and nuclear fuel material.

According to the draft, the government will not allow reactors to operate for more than 40 years, but may grant extensions on request.

Extensions will be subject to government checks on the obsolescence of the facility, and the plant operator's capacity to provide appropriate maintenance.

This is the first time for the government to try to regulate the lifespan of nuclear plants.

Hosono said the government will also revise safety standards against earthquakes, tsunami and other disasters with new knowledge and technology in protective measures and require power companies to comply with new standards.

The government will submit the legislation to the ordinary session of the Diet by the end of this month at the earliest, ahead of the planned launch of a new nuclear safety agency in April.

    by Edano 1/7/2012 2:11:26 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus It sounds like the animal rescue declaration. The official announcement sounds good. The details were not. They restricted it so bad it was almost meaningless and now the prefecture is trying to do something without the national govt. I am guessing the vagueness means it is BS, smoke and mirrors.

The former do not appear on any of the quake maps I use.

  • rt.com Wild monkeys to measure Fukushima radiation.
Radiation levels in the woods near the Fukushima nuclear power plant in the aftermath of the nuclear disaster is now going to be measured with the help of the primates.

Researchers from Fukushima University have designed special collars for the monkeys which will feed information to scientists.

Each of the collars contains a small radiation survey meter and a GPS transmitter and can be unclipped by remote control, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported on Saturday.
    by dean 1/7/2012 2:54:26 PM

  • @dean It would be good to see all of that in one place. The only data on anything I see is the NRC letters and official documents. I don't know if they list all of them with a heading of the issue anywhere. I don't like how you have to muck through the entire letter to find out the issue or decision. They never put a heading on them.
