  • Details on a public meeting to discuss spent fuel storage set for Jan 31st. They are seeking feedback on the 200 year storage of this fuel at reactors.

  • @lillymunster, re the fukushima diary report, I still do not quite follow this drilling core story. It seems to me that the cores and the drills shown in the top posts are examples and not from the site. But the bottom posts show core samples that are supposed to stem from the site. Why can't we see the drills at work? The examples show that you need to dig a deep large pit next to the reactors in order to drill laterally into the bedrock under the reactor. How did they do this without a trace? I assumed tepco was planning to drill holes into the primary containment walls inside the buildings. I wondered why even this was necessary, since the primary containment already provides access through a number of orifices that could be potentially used. As we are told, the core melt is supposed to lie on the bottom of the containment. Where did the core material shown in the fukushima diary come from? It is an interesting story, though.
    by Peter 1/7/2012 4:39:21 PM

  • @Peter There are lots of questions on the whole thing. The drill rig photos are not supposed to be of the site. Why nobody snuck a photo of the drill rig is a question. I could see TEPCO not reporting it. The big gap in the story I see is that the photo of the specimens could be from something else that happened to go on in Japan possibly. They do show that the specimen pegs out the radiation meter but there isn't anything proving those samples are located at TEPCOs facilities.
    by lillymunster 1/7/2012 4:47:23 PM

  • We can't see ground level at the plant on either camera so something going on below 1 story in height is hard to see.
    by lillymunster 1/7/2012 4:48:35 PM

  • @all - if you know of sources of data on US spent fuel in general or at specific reactors please post. I am going to try to do a couple of articles leading up to the public meeting.

Also, if you have ideas of anything we should do related to that? They are taking public feedback in writing until Feb and also during the web meeting. I think this is a big issue. If no real public feedback is given they are going to plop it all in reactor parking lots for 200 years and call it good.
    by lillymunster 1/7/2012 4:50:45 PM

  • @lillymunster , any pit accommodating such drill would be huge, need reinforced walls, and constantly fill with water at that location. Pumps and pipes would be needed. It is difficult to believe that tepco could achieve this without us noticing.
    by Peter 1/7/2012 5:17:19 PM

  • @Peter what about going under 1-2 stories at an angle? I thought the idea with those rigs was to drill under things?
    by lillymunster 1/7/2012 5:39:49 PM

  • @lillymunster , as I see it, 'going under' is accomplished by drilling sideways at an angle. If you wish to end up immediately under the pedestal for example from a point near the reactor, you must start to drill at a low elevation or from much further away.
    by Peter 1/7/2012 5:51:44 PM

  • @Peter If they indeed did this in some fashion more will eventually leak out, it always does. :-) I see your point about drilling. Would they have tried to go under the torus?

  • @lillymunster , that is what I thought. Be back later, ;)
