  • @lillymunster Well, I see there is a long way to go until nuclear power can be challenged but it must be a good sign that, according to an article I read recently, the Obama administration has already addressed more funding to renewable energy than all previous administrations put together. Sign of the times. Winds of change. We hope.

  • In the UK we are quietly setting ourselves up to use the coal we are sitting on (http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/topics/122756.aspx). I hope carbon capture works or things are going to get pretty warm :-(
    by hedge 1/6/2012 4:40:16 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus :-) well yes.

It seems like the less direct approach seems to be making inroads. Like what is proposed in NYC. We need more direct public say in energy policy at the state level. Word is where I live there is some people now pushing for a grid tied law that would require the power company to buy power excess from home generation of power.
The resistance power companies have to this is telling. Like where Peter lives in Virginia, you can grid tie solar but only if you buy certain systems through the power company. They still insist on having control and a cash cow.
    by lillymunster 1/6/2012 4:43:52 PM

  • @hedge I have not looked at UK consumption vs capacity. Is there enough wind potential to take a good portion of demand? Do they do serious conservation measures?

  • @lillymunster Scotland is going heavy on wind power. They have been researching on off shore wind power turbines and they have a pretty good floating plant effectively producing energy at the moment. Scientists believe the floating turbines could cover most of Scotland's energy needs in the near future.
by Pedro Jesus 1/6/2012 5:00:10 PM

  • @lillymunster But mind that Scotland's policies are very different from the rest of the UK. They're trying to become an independent country. Would be fun to watch, since most of, if not all of, UK's nukes (nuclear weapons) are on Scottish ground.

  • @Pedro Jesus There is serious resistance to high mpg cars from US automakers. It doesn't make sense. They have something to gain out of pushing larger than needed or fuel inefficient cars. They say public demand for them go up and sales of SUVs drop last time gas went up. People were buying scooters and driving golf carts on city roads when gas went up.

Fiat has introduced a small car in the US but for some perplexing reason they seem to be marketing it to more of an urban kid market.

  • Dosimeter readings for school children starting to come in:

Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, 06, a measure of individual cumulative dose of the month of November 2004 the city's preschool children and pregnant women, 0.66 mSv from one preschool child, in terms of annual announced that relatively high doses were measured 7.92 mSv.

The city is "affecting the health numbers right now, but hope to continue to support future research" is said.

Average is 0.11 mSv preschoolers, pregnant women 0.10 mSv, the highest was 0.36 mSv for pregnant women.

The city since late October last year, nurseries and kindergartens, distributing approximately 64,000,001 individual dosimeters who want to hope. Rent by measuring the accumulated radiation dose of the same in November, was recovered from the person who 52,390,001 896 pregnant women and preschool children. www.yomiuri.co.jp
    by lillymunster 1/6/2012 10:09:08 PM

  • Ex skf has details and a better translation:

On an annualized basis, 7.92 millisieverts from external radiation alone for the particular child, and 4.32 millisieverts for the pregnant woman. The average for the children was 0.11 millisievert, which would be 1.32 millisievert in one year. The average for the pregnant women was 0.10 millisievert, which would be 1.20 millisievert in one year.

Just a friendly reminder: Before the Fukushima I Nuke Plant accident, the natural "external" radiation exposure average in Japan was 0.59 millisievert per year.

Another reminder: Koriyama City started fitting the children and pregnant women with glass badges starting November 2011. There is no way of knowing what the radiation exposure may have been in the earlier months. ex-skf.blogspot.com

  • Something went down at the plant earlier today. This is the Tomioka cam. This is in the evac zone but the traffic is to and from Fuku. There was a bunch of fire trucks, trucks with hoses.

  • @dean That is the Tomioka web cam. It is on a TV station. I need to find out who or how to get access to the feed. I see clips on YouTube all the time of cattle, ostriches, dogs or other strange things people see on it. Looking on TEPCo reports now to see what went down. It was likely hours ago as it is early morning now in Japan

  • @all - catching some odd tidbits of information. Trying to get more solid reference material but this is what I found that might be related?

People in Iwaki are receiving iodine pills in the mail - photos, multiple blog posts, confirmed by reliable workers at the plant.

Unit 3 has spike in cesium out of unit 3 water intake canal - fukushima-diary.com References TEPCO records

They are taking air sample tests in unit 3's doorway and top of the building today with robot and cranes - results forthcoming - from TEPCO reports www.tepco.co.jp

Reports via twitter - trying to find an actual testing result but multiple blog posts and statements that cesium in the area outside the zone is increasing now.
    by lillymunster 1/6/2012 10:47:08 PM

  • I also saw a report and will have to see if I can re-find it that said iodine 131 was maybe being found on sensors inside unit 1 (inside the tent). I would need to fully translate the document but it didn't seem to refer to results of an earlier point in time? I will see if I can re-find the TEPCO paper.
    by lillymunster 1/6/2012 10:49:02 PM

  • all good finds as usual @ Lilly, imagine how difficult it is to keep the sensors and equipment all clean in those tent areas?
    by dean 1/6/2012 10:52:42 PM

  • @dean They are testing out the cleaner on the top and somewhere in the building. So far not finding any instances of i-131 in testing around the plant complex but have not found testing at the reactors themselves.
    by lillymunster 1/6/2012 10:54:17 PM

  • They did start finding some radioactive antimony in the water in December. Not sure if that means anything www.tepco.co.jp

  • @Lilly, is the plan to core drill into #2 and the others to try and determine corium status?
    by dean 1/6/2012 10:57:29 PM

  • @dean yes. Unit 2 first they think it is in the best shape to work on. Then try at 1 and 3 to do the same.
