  • @dean those videos are wild. Is the transformer burning the oil in it or burning up something else. It looked like there was the constant electrical arc and a fire.

We had a pole transformer (smaller than those) about 30 feet from our house. It would trip about once a year when a squirrel ran across the connections. It sounded like a bomb going off with a huge blinding flash.

  • @dean once the arc occurs between power lines, the ionized air provides a low resistance path and current keeps flowing. Air is a good insulator until you get an arc. youtube has lots of Jacob's Ladder videos. www.youtube.com

  • Piping at Fukushima reactor found insufficient to withstand quake
Piping and support structures at the No. 5 reactor
of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant did not have sufficient anti-quake strength under new government standards revised in 2006.

Some of the equipment could have been hit with a force as much as 4.3 times above safety standards if an earthquake of a scale forecast for the plant had struck.
    ajw.asahi.com

This is big. Unit 5 is the last BWR mark 1 built there and the building itself has improved design against quakes but they say the main cooling pipe would have failed under 2006 standards? That doesn't bode well for the old units.

  • You couldnt make it up -our local paper quotes a professor
The public image of nulcear power continues to lack a licence to thrill as a direct result of classic James Bond villains, it has been claimed.

The hostile masterminds from the much loved 007 movies are being blamed for causing a 'long lasting shadow' over the image of nuclear power, according to the president of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

However, Professor David Phillips has said that the image stemmed back to Dr. No, with his personal nuclear reactor, which led to a 'remorselessly grim' view held by many of atomic energy.

  • @elainekirk oh of course. It has nothing to do with the total lack of decent safety or the long string of bad accidents.

However, confirmation of anti-quake capabilities and reinforcement work have not yet been completed.

  • Interesting note on unit 5. It was actually started before unit 4 and was designed by Toshiba. Unit 6 was designed by Ebasco. So the design changes to 5 & 6's concrete shell but not done to unit 4 is curious.

@all - if anyone finds old images inside unit 5 that we don't already have those would be useful.

  • @lillymunster The US should back off either way; Assange hasn't breached any American law since he is not American and doesn't work for any American agency pledged to secrecy regarding classified documents. All he's done so far (or that can be proven) is perfectly legal. They can't even shut down his website. He will prevail even if he stands trial for the allegations he's involved in, which I sincerely doubt will ever happen. If no charges have been pressed so far, despite Assange's willingness to be interrogated by Swedish authorities, via video conference, regarding the allegations, I don't see much chance that there will be any charges in the future regarding the alleged sex offences.

  • A very strong point for a new generation of nuclear power plants...

"We cannot wish Britain's nuclear waste away"

"Opponents of nuclear power who shout down suggestions of how to use spent waste as fuel will not make the problem disappear"

"A new generation of "fast" nuclear reactors could consume Britain's radioactive waste stockpile as fuel, providing enough low-carbon electricity to power the country for more than 500 years"

"The technology with the potential to solve these problems is the fast reactor, ideally the integral fast reactor (IFR)"

"We are confronted not just with a choice between nuclear power and gas or coal [...] but also with a choice between different nuclear technologies." (George Monbiot) www.guardian.co.uk
