Also I need to get a tide map for Japan, the tides can help push those plates too. When you have a high tide coming in, there is more weight on top of the plate, It has more down pressure against it.

@Lisat, have mountains North, East and SE of us, deserts to the West and SW. We don't seem to get quakes here, which might be because sand moves real easy, and sandstone probably doesn't tear, it crumbles. So we could easily be moving here and not know it.

@Lisat, Yes, I believe the moon has an effect on the tides, the more water that was pushed on top of that plate was more pressure pushing it.

@ifz the Yellowstone caldera will erupt and it is due, historically. That image is disturbing considering that the amount of magma previously thought to be there was probably enough to wipe out 1/2 of the U.S.

Chubu Elec To Triple Frequency Conversion By Fall '12

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Chubu Electric Power Co. (9502) will triple conversion capacity at its Higashi Shimizu Frequency Converter by autumn 2012 to enable greater power supply to users in the Kanto region.

The Shizuoka facility converts 60-hertz electricity generated for residents of western Japan into 50-hertz electricity for people in eastern Japan.

The utility plans to increase capacity from the current level of 100,000 kW to 300,000 kW. It had planned to implement this increase by December 2014, but will now bring it forward two years to help alleviate power shortages in the Tokyo metropolitan area following the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The plan was revealed in talks between Chubu Electric President Akihisa Mizuno and Shizuoka Gov. Heita Kawakatsu on Tuesday morning. e.nikkei.com

You can't pump concrete into the reactor until the reactor is cold. If they tried that now, it would just make a mess as the heat for the hot fuel disrupted the concrete and kept it from setting. It will be several years before they can "entomb" it.

@ralph , so the core or part of it is melted and on the bottom ? not a good sign. I suspect all reactors 1-3 are in this state more or less as tepco says they all have been without coolant for extended periods and still waterlevel is not covering where the rods should be. Could the whole top half of the core be melted down for reactors 1-3 ?

The hydrogen that caused the explosions could only have come from exposed fuel rods.So a partial meltdown is a given. That is different from the rods melting down through the reactor floor and being totally uncontrolled.

Much of radiation leaked on Mar.15,16

Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission says that abnormalities in a reactor suppression pool were to blame for the release of large amounts of radioactive substances at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

It said much of the radiation was released during the 2 days after the suppression pool, connected to the No. 2 reactor, began showing problems at 6 AM on March 15.

The commission said that radiation is still escaping and the amount is rising marginally, but that the volume has dropped considerably since the crisis began.

Fukushima radiation measurement program

The Fukushima prefectural government has begun a program to measure radiation levels at more than 2700 locations across the region.

In response to residents' concerns, on Tuesday officials began examining radiation levels at 2,757 sites in 55 municipalities around the prefecture.

However, they plan to exclude the area within a 20-kilometer radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, where residents have been instructed to evacuate.

In front of the Iwaki railway station, officials measured radiation levels at 1 centimeter and 1 meter above the ground.

A local resident said he is concerned about the level of radiation where he lives and wants the authorities to provide the public with accurate information.

The prefectural survey will continue through Friday and include levels of iodine and cesium in the soil.

Curious uninformed layman's query: Has the situation of core fuel pellets becoming dislodged from the rod cladding and then dropping into the core containment flooring been studied/replicated under controlled real-world condition before? Thanks.

@Sinthia Domina could you answer a question.... a thermostat is about four foot in height on the wall because that is the area of the room that most of your body is....height rises so the comfort zone is different at 2' vs 4' vs 10'..... ratiation is both a exposure to skin and a inhalation issue.... does measuring at these heights give a true reading of both inhalation and exposure to skin...also thanks for clearifing that other thing for me i was confused

There is no way to tell that I know of, one hopes the drones might have some info. A return to criticality might point to such a scenario. New plutonium also points to such a case as it is produced by continuing fission reactions which shutdown should have stopped.
