Thanks, @NHK_Listener. So that means something like this is extremely difficult to stage and control - and study/observe - under lab conditions.
One more: Might there be some polyurethane foaming materials that can be used to spray onto loose fuel material (say, strewn ejecta on the ground around ground zero) that would make the now fuel-particle-garbed-in-foam-that-has-set-some to be more easily picked up with less risk of it breaking apart into smaller pieces, so net effect is easier harvesting of these fragments and quicker clean-up work? Thanks.

Fission is caused by a certain amount of material being in close proximity. That is why they put it into rods, to control how much is close to other amounts. If it is a bunch of pellets at the bottom of a pool, who can say what might happen?

It could never blow up like an atom bomb, the fuel is not rich enough, it could make a good bit of radioactivity though.

@Alblee its common to spray the ground for "dust" conditions.... most plants run water truck every day....BUT i bet the reason they spayed the blue/green gunk on the ground was partualy due to rad contamination and would bet they know they have loose pellets they are trying to hold in place

There has been no evidence of a major breach in the primary reactors. They are just spraying to stop the dust from getting the air from the releases that happened earlier which made a lot of radioactive dust..

@fitter well, it depends upon the type of radiation as to how "radioactive" it is, meaning the energy ie:gamma,beta,alpha. This in turns depends upon the amount of the radioactive particles ie: particulates that have been made radioactive by the fission process. All this talk about the radiation spewing or leaking is just wrong. Radiation is energy, that is much like light, as it travels in waves and particles. It doesn't do anything but emit energy, as it IS energy. It can only travel by particles of radioactive material being moved by an external force such as wind, in water etc. The energy emitted only goes a certain distance, much like the beam of a flashlight, and so it is hard to measure exposure in my opinion unless you have more details. Such as age of the person, method of contamination such as ingestion,inhalation,skin, the source of the contamination, length of time of exposure and the measurement of the radioactivity of the substance encountered. Anything else is just speculation and not good science. So far as height, the inverse square is law is applied...so the farther away the less active the energy, or the dimmer the flashlight beam...if that makes sense. If I am wrong about any of this someone please educate me. The only way it would rise through heat would be in steam or smoke.

Gamma is at 590 uSv at Fukushima, That is not too much. but breathing anything or eating it means that you get a little bit of radioactivity for a very long time. Fallout is always the big problem, not dosage from the source.

@borrrden if you are still there nhk posted drawing, the bottom right hand conor is the Tilte box, it will say who designed, the year, threse are differnt but it should give the name of the engin/drafter MOST inportant is there are five number that run up the left side look like dates they would usaually be the dates and rev to the drawings,,,,
