  • @jo will do, notice in the image I posted notice how the SFP is offset just a bit to the right (closer to the side wall) from the round reactor well. That gives a hint at the approximate location of the reactor well based on the open section of the SFP on #3.

  • @elainekirk Elaine, 4 is the one some whistleblower admitted they screwed up the side wall of the RPV when making it and fudged it to get it back to tolerances. I don't know if that had anything to do with the maintenance or not but worth keeping in the equation maybe.

  • interesting elainekirk... a high radiation alarm.. hmmmmm ... most likely some problem with core fuel ... the reactor I worked on had periods where there were leaking cladding.. called. "leakers".. that forced a shutdown.... radiation setpoints for nuclear plants would be in the TSR Jo,,,, and usually quite high..

  • @NHK Listener: take a look to this design: the reactor is near the wall, turbines building side, with a square concrete structure around. This structure can be clearly seen on cryptome pics; concerning the distance, don't forget the perspective effect...

  • The Fukushima-Daini Nuclear Power Station Unit-4 had been under the reactor start-up operation for preparing the power generation. At 9:21 on February 18, 2007, the alarm “main steam line radioactivity high high trip” was announced and the reactor was automatically shut down.
    Changes of the main steam line radiation monitor and other radiation monitors were not observed. There was no radiological impact to the environment.

  • That was Dai-ni. They thought a radiation monitor gave a spurious high reading due to static electricity build up from dry air-conditioned air. But wrong power station, eh?

  • @Edano: the refuelling elevator is on the west side of the building, we can see the shed (?) where trucks enter just below the fuel elevator as I draw it. No doubt for this.
    The square labelled here as the 'fuel elevator' on your pic is the drywell concrete structure. If you have a hi-res version of this pic, you can see light reflection on a nearly spherical metalic yellowish thing; this is the vessel head...

  • @dean No problem. In fact, it's interesting, really. They had that MOX "near-criticality" at Tokai Nuclear Fuel plant in 2007, too. Bad year for them.

  • @all, after somebody earlier said "I explained that a dozen times now", I thought it might be nice to have all those that have technical knowledge in what is going on to conspire and have a daily "Status" report of the reactors and the happenings at the plant. This would allow those that aren't as technical to get up to date on things and also alleviate the need to keep saying the same things over and over again, especially since this is a 24 hour board and some of you are not available to answer those questions all night and day.

  • @Nancy: I'm quite sure it's not the same reactor: the yellow cap would be at the north-east corner, given this pic, it actually is at the north-west corner.
    I do not say the vessel is square. I say the concrete structure around the vessel is. This structure may not be seen when the floor above it is intact...
    On the #4 reactor pic this structure can be seen and the round metallic vessel structure inside can be seen too. On the #3 pic, we can see the same concrete structure and we can see a huge object inside, yellowish / blackish (but there's been fire in the building...); the light reflections on this object show that it's nearly spherical; as there are no light reflection on concrete, this object is likely to be metallic. What metallic stuff, with a nearly spherical shape, enclosed in a concrete structure would you find near the center of building, on the turbine side ?

  • @FradyKat: if you use chemicals to separate elements, you will use the same storage space. But you will have a large amount of waste will low radioactivity and a few amount with a very high radioactivity rate.
    That's what Areva does in La Hague plant, as far as I know, to reduce the amount of space needed to store highly radioactive material.

  • @Jo Thank you for that answer, I have been puzzled as to why they don't do that for ALL spent fuel. The low level stuff can be further depleted maybe, then there is less to store.

  • @Nancy: from the link you gave, if you look the shape of the concrete structure on the "Colored in drawing of the reactor to show known details of #4" pic you can see that the internal shape is round but the external shape at the top is square.

  • @Edano this conversation is had every other night. If anyone knows of a way to distribute information so I could maybe go a few days without having to explain this please let me know. It is getting really old. I am not mad at anyone but tired of repeating myself over one oddity that keeps tripping people up.

    Reactor 1. The blueprint is of Reactor 1.Go look at the buildings before the blew up. Reactor 1 is considerably smaller and narrower than the other buildings. The blueprint is of reactor 1. The reactor well in #3 and #4 (both are wider buildings) is more close to the mid line of the building. As seen in the CNIC video still I posted twice tonight. The reactor well is also round. As it is shown in that image and every drawing I have seen to date. Please tell me what I can do to get this across? Has anyone looked at the info I put online? I did it to try to pass on what has already been found including images of portions of the round reactor well on both 3 and 4. There is also some confusion on #4 because the RPV cap is off and people were mistaking it for the reactor well when looking at a side view. Maybe something on these page would explain?
