  • seem to be first signs of the RPV in R1 stabilising at last. Both pressure and temp went down over the last 24h and both measured temps are below boiling point assuming the higher pressure reading... www.meti.go.jp www.meti.go.jp But let's see if it continues I guess.

  • #1: as Sims mentioned, for the first time the RPV temperature crossed the boiling point which means steam is starting to condense and may explain the fact the pressure is now dropping.
    The bad thing is that water is boiling in the drywell which means there's a heat source there; this is an evidence (given the fact we don't have radiation data there anymore) there's criticality in the drywell, not just highly radioactive material escape from the RPV.

  • #2: RPV temperature stabilinzing at about 140 °C is not very good.
    For the drywell, same as #1: high radioactivity level (26 / 29.5 Sv/h) plus water boiling there means presence of a powerfull heat source; in other words, free running nuclear fission.
    Also note the radioactivity level in the suppression chamber is higher than we could think from previous releases: 12.1 Sv/h. It's likely that fuel debris go on leaking to the suppression chamber with the water flow. This is bad: no way to go near the suppression chamber and isolate the part leaking using valves (if it's possible, which we don't know...)

  • #3: worse than #1 & #2. RPV is not the threat, in my opinion, there: its temperature is near the boiling point (122 °C), the pressure is low, it's likely to stabilize soon.
    Drywell: very bad data: high radioactivity, very high temperature: 253 °C near the RPV, 104 °C. There's likely a huge fuel leak there and my guess is now the 20th of March RPV depressurisation was at the time the fuel breached the RPV.
    Suppression chamber: radioactivity is incredibly high there: 56 Sv/h ! Hope this data is false, as it seems not consistent with the temperature which is low; or it may mean that a lot of fuel debris has escaped there but there are too scattered in the torus to be able to restart a fission reaction; we may have more clues with next data releases.

  • @elaine: you're welcome, I'm just trying to interpret this release as we have a lot of new data that can help a lot to understand: we now have drywell and suppression chamber temperatures !
    This said, my guesses may be wrong: this is what I think given the physics data and remembering thermodynamics law but the truth may be more subtle... Note that I'm not a nuclear physics specialist...

  • #5 and #6: not a lot of data. Temperature are stabilized, #6 being less stable than #5. This goes: fill in, wait for water to drop, refill, ... The way the pressures dropped suddenly the 20th of March is a clue that something may have broke in the primary coolant loop this day.

  • @xxx:my bad, you're right: #2 suppression chamber is 121 Sv/h, not 12.1. This plus the drywell temperature (131 against 104 at HVH), unlike what I previously said, #2 state is worse than #3.

  • @xxx: I suppose drywell RPV & HVH temperature are correlated; then, #3 is 253 °C at RPV measure point while being 104 °C at HVH, #2 being 131 °C at HVH is likely to be near 300 °C at RPV or higher...
    Of course the correlation hypothesis might be false.

  • Gist of TEPCO plan to end Fukushima nuke crisis

    TOKYO, April 17, Kyodo

    The following is the gist of steps Tokyo Electric Power Co. announced Sunday that it will take to bring under control the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

    TEPCO aims to achieve:

    STEP 1 (In roughly three months)

    -- Filling containment vessels of Nos. 1, 3 reactors with water.

    -- Sealing with sticky cement part in No. 2 reactor's containment vessel believed breached.

    -- Injecting nitrogen into Nos. 2, 3 reactors to avoid possible hydrogen explosion.

    -- Restoring circulatory cooling system for spent fuel pools.

    -- Installing facility to decontaminate highly tainted water and purify seawater.

    STEP 2 (In roughly six to nine months)

    -- Bringing reactors into stable condition known as 'cold shutdown.'

    -- Blanketing buildings housing Nos. 1, 3, 4 reactors with covering.

    MIDTERM GOALS

    -- Extracting fuel assemblies from pools holding spent fuel.

    -- Covering reactor buildings with containers, such as those using concrete.

  • @Edano This is not an attack on you, but I have some real concerns with the validity of that alleged picture of the #4 SPF. When I compare that picture to other current pictures of the heavily damaged #4 Reactor building, I have a hard time finding such an undamaged section of the SPF.

  • I looked at those new tepco videos last night. They have some much better images than the stills released. In the process of grabbing stills today. I think we can get a better idea of what is going on. James, what about the SFP is concerning? Are you talking from the water gathering shots?
